A mother’s hand are unique and incomparable. There are no other pair of hands like my mother’s. Hers was soft, smooth, warm and gentle. She had fair skin and therefore made her red allergens more visible which covered her wrists. Her nail beds were nicely rounded and grew into a nice almost eye ball shape, and she hardly ever had her nails painted. She loved the natural look of it and I guess aided to the healthiness of it. She absolutely loved jewellery on her fingers. Her wedding band, was a solid gold band with three small tear drop diamonds, inside the band was engraved my father’s name. She also had a set of three gold rings first with a small diamond encapsulated by half an infinity that was placed on her pinky finger; second on her ring finger with two diamonds and lastly on the middle finger with three diamonds all encapsulated by half an infinity. On her other middle finger, she wore a ring with an intricate pattern resembling that of lace, surrounded by a thin gold band. I believe it was made especially for her by my father. She wore a silver analog watch on her left wrist with a small watch face and no numerals, just the hands to tell the time. She wore it loose and had to twist her hand upwards to tell the time.
Those beautiful hands are the ones that held me and nurtured me, who cuddled me especially that one time we went through a car wash and I was afraid and so she pulled me into her lap until it was over. Hands that fed me and in moments that required it, disciplined me. Hands that I held onto even when they grew tired and needed rest.
Mummy I know I’ve gone a long way without your beautiful hands, but I need them now to comfort me. I miss you. And what’s hurting me now, is that who’ll hold me as I hold my own future children? No hands could ever replace yours. I love you, immensely.
