imagine someone taking care of your teen grandchild (and their cat and dog) that your daughter abandoned so they wouldn’t have to move out of state with you and be surrounded by queerphobes. this young couple doesn’t ask you for anything because they’re just glad the kid can finish high school with their friends and people who accept them.

you realize this after a whole year of being hands-off despite your wealth and obvious means, so you offer to buy them their first car when they graduate next year. great! because of this, the couple uses what’s left of their tax refund to get your grandchild driving lessons and their learner’s permit.

after also paying for college applications and orientation, they’re about to go broke just to add a teenager to their car insurance policy. there’s just one summer left, they’ll make it through somehow. they always do!

fast forward to the week after graduation (you missed it, because “everyone graduates high school”). for some reason you change your mind about the car, and you tell them it’s because it wouldn’t be fairrrr. you got their older sibling their first car like 6 years after graduating high school, so you’ll do that instead. just get through college now, and that’s the reward. their custodial guardians even have a baby now, and lucky for you they always seem to make it work on their own.
