AIRA Gala
A few weeks after the V-drum workshop, we are lucky to be able to catch the launching of AIRA line product by Roland Asia Pacific, held at Pisco bar, Changkat. Awesome performance, nice ambience, great food, chilling drinks & the best part, we get to mingle with the whole AIRA line gears hands on.
AIRA product launch is championed by Tioneb, a renowned French beatboxer and musician, also the winner of world loop contest, 2012. His performance rocked the night big time. Fusion live performance at it’s best, with clever use of all of the AIRA gears, TR-8 drum machine, System-1 analogue modelling synth, TB-3 bassline sequencer, VT-3vocoder, fused with the RC-505 looper & his beatbox skills. Totally digging his skills.
As electronic music enthusiast, we are stoked that Roland is slowly bringing affordability to advanced analogue gears. Although most of AIRA products run only on analogue modelling circuitry, it is still a big step forward seeing that current market either offers super pricey synths or synths with very limited controls.
Stay tuned through Roland Asia Pacific's Facebook page for updates on future events.
Roland Garland
In the digital era where technology strive for simplicity, when everything is done with a push of a button, assistance of the the ever easy, time saving, library of presets. Roland, taking a different approach, bringing back complexity & flexibility while still maintaining the ease of use, blending analogue with digital, made possible with their brand new V-drum & AIRA product line.
As things get more digital, we tend to miss the feeling of turning knobs, playing with sliders, getting hands-on instead of rotating virtual knobs with your mouse & keyboard.
We are lucky to be able to catch some of Roland's product launch & get hands on with both their V-drum & AIRA products in 2 consecutive week. Even managed to catch a sneak peek of their RC-505 looper which is yet to be available in Malaysia still.
V-drum product demo (Melaka, Ice Music Paradise) is hosted by one of Roland Asia Pacific's personnel, Tony David, who is an avid drummer, veteran session musician & also a drum coach. Showcasing some of their electronic drums, like the TD-15K, acoustic fusion gear, the TM-2 Trigger Module, & also Octapad digital percussion.
Personally we have been drooling all over for the Octapad since long time back, but during the demo, we must admit that the TM-2 Trigger Module is definitely a game changer. It brings hybrid versatility to the acoustic drumset in an easy manner, which adds endless possibilities for a drummer, allowing one to go electronic, but still, maintaining the traditional way of playing a drum set.
A TM-2 basically is an external sample trigger module that triggers sound when it picks up signal through drums hits that are received from special pick-ups mounted on an acoustic drum set, mainly the kick drum, snare & toms. It comes bundled with a SDHC card slot that lets users trigger their own WAV sounds stored on SDHC media, from one-shot samples and loop phrases to complete backing tracks.
Roland Asia Pacific is also having a V-drum contest currently till 31st July with prices up to RM 30,000 up for grab. Stay tuned through Roland Asia Pacific's Facebook page for more info & updates on future events.
Next up: AIRA Gala. Stay Tuned.

Dongtaidu (动态度) - Shock Circuit 3.0 《静电流动3.0》
It was a blast during Dongtaidu (动态度)'s annual Shock Circuit concert last Saturday. Not too big a crowd, decent sized venue (Freespace, Kakiseni, SS2 mall), just nice for an intimate concert experience for the crowd to better connect with the artists & performers.
Shock Circuit 3.0 《静电流动3.0》 featured a lineup with a balance mix of Indie electronic, pop, glitch, house, to even noise. In between there's a few acoustic sets, though not that relevant but they do give your ears a break for a moment before the next pumping performance.
One of the most interesting set would be a solo noise set by Ng Chor Guan. He uses a theramin and a French horn for his set. Crafting ambient noise, psychedelic tunes through software looping. Check him out on YouTube: FUGU.
Jena is the only performer who incorporates modern controllers (Launchpad & APC40) & also visuals to his set, playing hyped up glitch tune to house genre tracks. His clever use of various cool chopped vocal samples added color and uniqueness to his performance. Too bad the crowd's a little low for such an upbeat set. We are kind of like the only 2 person standing infront trying to look at how he mingles with the launchpad & APC. Managed to have a chat with him too. A cool guy indeed. Find him on Soundcloud: Jenatones.
Opening act is by an electronic pop indie trio, Kokkamango. Their composition wanders in between psychedelic and romantic style.
There was also a full analogue set by Gnurr, utilizing only Kaoss pad, microkorg, guitars, looper & effects pedals. Everything produced live without the aid of a computer. Mad skill!
Not to miss, the 2 acoustic set one of it by Straw Lin, & the final act, vocal power house, Keith Tan from a local indie band, Platform 11.
Totally looking forward to their shock Circuit concert series next year!
Zoom H1 - Compact studio
Zoom H1 is a portable handheld recorder frequently used in the photography & videography field as a budget microphone to capture quality audio with clear representation of depth with it's on-board stereo microphone.
In this article, we will be looking at the usage of H1 in a more musical context.
USB Audio Interface H1 can be used as a 2 in, 2 out USB microphone recording audio directly to your DAW or receiving audio from samples playback & triggering, vst instruments without latency as it supports ASIO.
With an additional stereo input, we can even channel in line instrument, or much more audio inputs through a mixer (Stereo mix down), making zoom H1 a budget audio interface best suited for small start ups, table top studio. With the bundled WaveLab LE, start recording straight out of the box directly to your computer.
Microphone We wouldn't be needing an additional microphone as the H1 already have not 1, but 2 condensers on board. Furthermore, it has on board auto-levelling function & filters. Very useful in preventing peaks & also to cut off wind noise. Sound monitoring is also a breeze with H1's on board backlit liquid crystal display and reference speaker for direct playback after recording. And as a small size standalone recorder, it can be easily carried around and record on the go. Very useful especially for electronic producers who do samplings.
Now, some of you might be wondering whether if it's possible for a zoom H1 to record simultaneously from both the on-board Stereo Mic & Line inputs. Unfortunately, it is not a feature available in this handy recorder. Plugging in a line input disables the on-board microphones. Simultaneous recording functions are only present in zoom's higher end devices like the Zoom H4n.
Sound Quality The best part, Zoom H1 records in 24 bit in external recorder mode, which is a feature quite rare in devices in this price range. For music recording, it is always recommended to be recording in 24 bit for that additional clarity & headroom to give space for further mixing. In USB mode, it records in 16 bit, 44 or 48 kHz.
Here is a basic breakdown on the equipments needed for this setup: Zoom H1, RM 340 - 350 MISC cables & converters, Rm 15 - 20 (Optional) MIni camera tripod, RM 10 - 20 (Optional) Mic Stand with univeral clamp, Rm 80-100
*Price stated as of May 2014. *ZOOM H1 pictures all rights reserved by ZOOM Co. Japan.
