Nicky wasn't her first unsavory affair and maybe he won't be her last. "The city's filled to the brim with toxic people, Kieran. Easier bending to it than deny I'm anything but."

" it's a therapist , " kieran pointed out . " i don't think they're exactly gossiping with half the city . they wouldn't have clients . " she took a sip of her coffee , almost laughing as nat continued on . " we all have a long list of toxic men , nat , you aren't the only one . "

"I'm not just talking about the therapist, I'm only saying in general." Natalie pressed her back against the bench's rest with a wistful sigh, "I know that, but have you ever slept with a known cartel leader only to realize he was married? Yep, that's me." She was apparently a glutton for danger, though. "Maybe I'm the toxic one."

she stared back at him and shook her head, " you know, maybe you should think about the fact that if we were friends, alec, you coming in here and asking me to help you get a job immediately made that moot. " matteo shook her head and bit her lower lip, " the moment you use me for my connections, tells me everything I am worth to you. " she stood up, " I'll let you know when I hear something. "

"I wasn't trying to use you, Mats. Everyone, no matter who it is, automatically assumes the worst of me." Alec raised his hands in a defeated shrug, allowing those who saw him in such a light to continue having those opinions. He couldn't change them regardless. "And by the way, your connections aren't the only reason I came around to see you, but you'll think what you want." He tore his gaze away, "Yeah, okay, thanks."

" i know that . " dakota at least knew and believed that . " but i'm still my father's son . " and it didn't matter how much jiro had shielded dakota . there were still things he knew and understood about this life . he sucked in a breath as he leaned back in his seat , " assuming my father goes for it , none of this will be easy and you certainly won't be rolling in a lot of money at first . "

"At least someone does." Alec removed his phone from his pocket, shooting the brother in question a quick text that he would be home later than usual tonight. Reese did hold some self-independence when it came to dinners and going to bed at a decent hour when Alec wasn't there enforcing the rules, which reminded him too much of himself. "I'm not expecting a large pay out right away. I just need some type of income rolling in no matter how small."

" yes, " he agreed without consideration, he was a very busy man and he was doing this as a favour for his son. he could always use a fall man, and that wasn't really what he wanted to do here, but if that was all alec could offer, then that was all he could give him. he had to prove his worth and that was never an easy thing for anybody to do, certainly not in jiro's eyes. he waited for the other to sit before shifting, " would you like a drink? you can begin your case when you're ready. what is it you are hoping for? what do you want? "

Alec planned his play before arriving here carefully, he couldn't approach this with the typical cockiness. Don't speak out of turn, don't be anything but polite, and show the male the respect he deserved. Jiro may be Dakota's father, but it's rare they crossed paths. "Yes, please, thank you." Probably wasn't a great idea to even touch alcohol, but Alec saw how rude it was turning the offer down. "I know while my father was working at your disposal, he didn't leave the best impression. He left his children home alone and it's fair to say his hands aren't the cleanest." The man leaned forward, resting his elbows against his knees, "I raised my brother Reese since the moment he was born on my own. He matters to me, but I can't provide the way I want without anything to my name. So," Alec leaned back against the chair cushions, "Even if it's not possible to move up, I would like the opportunity to excel. I think having an unassuming personality like mine could exercise discretion. I can blend in." He released a slow sigh, "I'm a fast learner, sir. I'll follow any order I'm given."

she narrowed her eyes, lips pursing ever so slightly as archie seemed adamant to try and do anything he could to get under her skin, which of course was totally fruitless. matteo crossed one leg over the other, pressing her tongue to the roof of her mouth, clicking her tongue as she considered her response before letting out a sigh, " don't eat your words too soon, archie. you might think playing a game with me will be fun for you, but you're wrong. I'm too smart, I'm too pretty and I'm too loved to get involved in any sort of interaction with you. "

Archie simply stretched a calm smile on his lips, never denying himself the walk along the dangerous territory especially knowing who Matteo's father is. She wasn't another sarcastic young woman who grew too large for her britches, she was a one-way ticket in poking the bear. "And who claimed I was playing a game with you, love? I'm just a friendly face making conversation as the socialite I was raised to be." His mother in particular hammered polite manners into him from an early age. Every yes and no sir should be accompanied by all forms of gratitude. "That is your choice. I respect that, but if you happen to need some entertainment to pass the time, I'm around."

she didn't need help, nor did she need a man backing her up, but kaia thought it was better than trying to fight two men at once. she wasn't stupid, after all. she gave a sweet smile to the man that stepped in and encouraged the other to step down, she was certain it wouldn't have gone that way had he not, but she could've handled that. kaia crossed her arms, tipping her head to the side when the other didn't immediately take his leave. strange that he could see the issue without realising he contributed to it now, " somehow you think you're an exception, do you? why's that? "

Archibald removed the protective headphones that muffled the sound of shots from his head, wrapping them around his neck as he eyed the woman with curiosity. She held the stunning beauty as a dancer and if he ever ended up in whatever establishment she worked for, he held no doubts he would have been equally as enchanted. "I am on most fronts, love. Merely for the notion I am phenomenal at what I do." Archie gestured toward the gun. "Rest assured, at least I wouldn't harass a woman who only did hers for that pathetic waste of masculine space."

kaia made her way over to natalie, watching as the woman bit somebody's head off for staring. her brow perked as she closed their distance, leaning against the wall as she cleared her throat, " now, what's weirder? a grown ass woman writing in her journal in the park like a teenager in a romcom, or the gross man who's paid attention to the fact that not only is she wearing short shorts in winter, but she's also not paying attention to her surroundings that well. " kaia lifted her brows, " tighten up, nat. "

Natalie stopped scribbling mid-sentence and glanced between the brunette female and the man giving her not-so-subtle looks, watching the latter scurry away with a disgruntled huff. "Why does everyone think it's such a weird thing? I'm not staring dreamily in the distance as I write about my crushes. It's...therapy assignments." Though, Kaia did have a point. A woman of her nature shouldn't be wearing shorts in colder weather nor oblivious to who was tracking her. "Appreciate the advice, Kaia, but I have pepper spray in my bag. I can handle the horny assholes." Even the likes of Nicky, at least, she tried.

"Not really, no, but I thought I was an open book type of person." Natalie's mouth pulled in a dismayed frown. At one point, she excelled at playing the social butterfly, however, this was no longer high school. "The moment I open my mouth and even share that part of myself, I'm fucked. Trust me, I've been burned before." The blonde tucked a leg underneath her and sighed, "Long list of toxic men proves that point."

" i mean , you're the one journaling in public like a weirdo , " kieran pointed out . " and i don't care for what's rude . " it was the truth at the end of the day . what was anyone really going to do about it ? not much . " can't remember the last time i had a journal or a diary . " now that she thought about it , she didn't think she ever had .

"It's no different than an artist sketching in public." Natalie shrugged and closed the journal, clicking the pen a few times before placing both items back in her bag, "My last one was middle school, but this is one of those mandatory therapy type of things." She didn't see a point to it, really. What's wrong with keeping it concealed like everybody else in the world? "And then she expects I'll magically be healed by ranting on a piece of paper because society makes us believe we can't express our emotions in a healthy way out loud."

" there are plenty to choose from, " she retorted without skipping a beat, it would be foolish to consider her father the biggest bad that new york had to offer. he may have been powerful, ruthless and well known, but gabriel was not the only one. matteo looked archie up and down, his appearance gave little away but he did seem rather tightly wound, even if he played it off by allowing himself to become too casual with strangers. she watched him tip too much in a small tab and smirked, it was more money in her pocket anyway, even if archie appeared to be showing off and not even for her benefit. she wondered which stereotype the man fell into-- did his mother love him too much? or not enough? pushing aside the thought, she offered a laugh in response to his words, " how about you don't piss me off, huh? " she nodded towards the door, " see you around, apparently. "

"It's a wonder why I loved here for the action." He teased playfully. Archibald never stayed in one place and planted his roots for very long, the job taking him on different travels as well as his overall impatience with the stagnant lifestyle. He held no friends, no long term relationships that lasted longer than a week, and he held little interest starting a family who would become a weakness when his enemies came knocking at the door begging for retribution. He was married to his career, even if he once entertained the notion of settling down very briefly. "I won't piss you off and you won't piss me off. It's an equal understanding." Archie glanced towards the door and back, "I could stay for another round, since my curiosity is piqued."

he was reluctant to do this, not simply because he didn't think alec would be successful in this role, he couldn't know that for sure until they interacted in a professional manner, but because alec was a friend of his son's. introducing anybody directly involved with dakota to his work was nothing he casually did, or ever wanted to do, but he promised dakota he would at least hear the other out and jiro had every intention of doing so. he had arranged for alec to meet him at his office, he had arrived punctual which was certainly a good start, although jiro did not rush to bring the other in, he liked to test temperament among many other things. eventually, however, he allowed his assistant to guide alec into his office, where jiro sat on the sofa nursing a drink, standing only when the younger man approached him. Dakota made good on his promises. It wasn't sooner after Alec received word that permitted him to make the travels to Jiro's office before ensuring he arrived at the correct time, even showing up fifteen minutes early. Which meant enough silent moments alone with his thoughts while Alec's nerves gripped the pit of his stomach. He wasn't regretting the decision, no, but there is a vast difference between speaking about joining the dark side and actually moving one step closer turning it into reality. It seemed like a century until someone retrieved him from the waiting room and presented him to a powerful man with many connections. "Thank you for seeing me, Sir." Alec nodded his head with respect and moved to sit in the chair Jiro indicated. "I know you're very busy."

dakota never felt bad for where he came from or how he grew up . he knew he had a life of privilege most people couldn't afford and could only dream of but it wasn't a place of guilt for him . dakota almost chuckled as alec questioned him , " a dealer took a hammer to my hand . " that wasn't the full story although it was the main consequence . " took a chance on a guy i thought was a friend . he wanted me to introduce him to a dealer , i did . things got dicey and i got a shattered hand out of it . " he tilted his head to the side , " which is why i'm telling you even though i consider you a friend , if you get this chance and you fuck it up , i will fuck you up . " dakota sighed as he shrugged his shoulders , " my dad isn't going to care about who you are , who your dad was , or why you're doing this . if he thinks for a moment that you're arrogant or naive about what you're asking for -- it's going to be done before it even gets started . "

Alec forced out a whistle at the information, wondering why he seemed surprised that Dakota offered the story openly. "Shit, for real? Makes me wonder if the dealer or this friend is even still alive." That wouldn't shock him either, if they were being honest, especially if word reached Dakota's father. "Jesus, okay, I got it. Don't fuck up my one chance and I won't get fucked up by a very pissed off you looking to wring my neck five ways to Sunday." He muttered, pausing a minute and actually thinking about his current life choices. "I know the arrogance runs in my veins. I know I have a no shits given attitude, but I can take something seriously if it involves my brother. You know that, right?"

she snorted and shrugged her shoulders, " we're friendly but we stopped being friends when I let you put your dick in me, alec, " and it really was that simple for matteo, while she could have certainly blurred the lines, especially now, the way things had come to an end had solidified a lack of trust between them. friends trusted one another, that wasn't exactly how she saw this relationship anymore, which was rather disappointing but not surprising. that was how most relationships went for matteo, " I'll never do a favour for free, that's all. " she pulled out her phone and shot a couple texts out, seeing what came back as she crossed her legs over one another, " uh-huh, good to know you don't underestimate me, doll. "

"Story of my fucking life, sweetheart." Alec wouldn't give her the satisfaction that it bothered him somewhat even while they were still on a friendly level. He didn't keep friends apparently and a part of the man believed he himself was the reason for it. That's the self-conscious bullshit speaking, however. "Nothing is free, Matteo, why should I expect anything different?" Alec watched her type out a few messages, curious as to where they were going, before raising a nonchalant shrug. Always the unbothered man no one took seriously. Whatever. "Never said I did. I learned that the hard way." He pointed out dryly, "It pays to have a not-friend on the other side."

saint never really had much issue making friends, granted, there was always a certain barrier that he placed between himself and the rest of the world, so friendships often meant more to the other person than they ever did to him. holland was about the only person who'd ever really experienced the real saint, and even then, maybe not exactly. maybe not completely. saint performed most of his life and it appeared that alec was finally beginning to understand that saint was not completely how he appeared to be initially. the man smirked at alec's outburst, he knew this may have been disappointing but he didn't exactly understand why alec would find him at his job and confide such a thing in him, as if he could react any other way. he was within reason here, which was surprising, considering how often saint acted unreasonably. he watched as the man rose and waved a hand, "it's gonna be real embarrassing for you when it's me putting you in cuffs, alec, remember that. "

In that moment, Alec finally realized a truth he should have arrived at years ago. There was absolutely no one he could place his trust in anymore. No family, no friends, even when those who gave the impression they were on friendly terms were nothing but liars looking to fuck him over somehow. Maybe that's another reason why he found himself flipping the switch and turning to a life meant for people like his father who abandoned his children for kicks. He'd keep Reese protected, providing a home better than the one he grew up in, but why should he give a shit about turning into the Blanchard patriarch when there's very little to care about? Fuck it. "You don't actually care. I see that now, Saint." Alec moved around his chair, hands dropping to grip the back of it tightly, "It doesn't matter anymore. Prison, six feet under, I've lost all ability to bother myself with the details."

Natalie never minded journaling when she was still in her middle school days, but that of course became a chore when her therapist suggested unloading every personal feeling on the page and then sharing it at their sessions. It's one thing writing for her own sake, but spewing thoughts in another's ear wasn't appealing. Nat knew she needed to censor herself in case she revealed too much about the almost unsavory aspects of a personality that was multi-faceted and sometimes dark. Yet, wasn't everyone in New York like this? Nat felt eyes on her as she abruptly stopped writing, lifting her head, "You know it's rude to stare, right?"

" you can not be this dim, " kaia protested, slowly turning to face the guy that thought it was not only a good idea to approach her off the clock, but to assume that because they'd shared conversation the night before, and the night before that, and so on for around a week, that she actually liked him. that she wanted his attention when she was spending her own free time. that she wanted conversation while wearing noise cancelling headphones and shooting a gun at the rage. she lifted her brows, " I'm sorry to shatter the illusion, sunshine, but you pay me to dance on you, your payment ensures I listen and engage enthusiastically with you during that time, but outside of the club, I am not interested in you, or anyone, for that matter. so maybe... fuck off? "

Archie spent the afternoons three days a week at the shooting range, especially during the time he currently wasn't on an assignment, attuning his target practice and scoping out how well everyone else around him did with their shots. He couldn't deny how ridiculous it felt sometimes littering bullets in a paper target, but it's the next best thing compared to the real deal. Archie released his finger from the trigger as his gaze landed on an interaction at the stall next to him, flitting between the woman and the gentleman caller who was clearly being a nuisance. He watched with amusement, not so much on the male, but the spitfire already grabbing his attention. "Oh, we do have a problem, don't we?" Archibald released a dramatic sigh and moved to the man's side, not hesitating to press the barrel of the gun to the other's head, "You really should fuck off now. Before I do something not very nice." The guy looked between him and Kaia before backing off, shooting Archie a glare as he was leaving. The Devereaux man lowered his weapon. "Well, that is annoying."
