This is Vest! Previously @/void-puddle

They're the maskfly that was in the puddle and has now emerged thanks to yall's asks!

Some lil fun facts abt Vest: It's mimicking is inspired by how a Starling or Crow mimcs things, and its appearance is based off of a Nightjar!

It can, and will still mimic stuff you say to it, but this time you REALLY gotta convince it!

“….I dost not understand your statement, bug I am not that big of a Maskfly..”

*Vest slept in their bag-nest for a good long while, waking up a few hours later. It instinctively stretched its wings but quickly regretted it, hissing in pain from their damaged wing. It scowled, clumsily flopping out of its bag-nest.*

“Ah! You’re awake!”

Adonis walked over, appearing instantly by their side. Despite his masked face, he clearly looked concerned about them.

“Are you alright? Has the pain not improved at all?”

"I hast forgotten about it almost immediately when i hast awoken." *It replied, looking up at him.* "Dost thee know how long it shall take for thine's wound to heal?"

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“At a minimum, it would take…a week, perhaps? That wound you’ve gotten is pretty nasty. It would take much longer to heal than the average nick or cut,” Adonis said after some thought, before checking on its bandaged wing.

He winced. “I might need to change your bandages…you’ve bled through them.”

"I hast?? Even while in slumber??" *It exclaimed, staring at him in major concern.*

Adonis nodded.

“Even when you’re asleep,” He affirmed, “If the bleeding hasn’t coagulated on its own, it would continue to flow until it does.”

He crossed the room, grabbing his previous supplies and walking back over. He’d brought water again, a cloth and a fresh wad of bandages.

*They growled seeing the water.* "Not again."

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, this will be the last time. I promise. And I probably won’t be using a lot of it,” said Adonis, unable to keep the chuckle out of his voice. He began to carefully unwrap the bandages around their wing.

*The wound looked like it had been healing, though the void that clung to Vest's feathers still seemed to want to enter the open wound, luckily enough the blood was keeping it at bay.*

Adonis frowned, assessing the appearance of the wound. On one hand, he knew he should clean the blood away. On the other, he was worried that if he did, the odd black substance would enter the wound and do who knows what from inside them.

After some thought, he decided to compromise. He cleaned the corners of the wound, leaving just a small clump of blood to dry in the center. He hoped it would be able to keep the substance out, at least until the wound forms a scab.

He then reached for the new bandages and started to wrap them around their wing once more.

"Do be careful.." *Vest said, watching him wrap their wing.*

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“I will,” Adonis assured them, his movements slow and methodical with each wrap. Eventually, he finished, tucking the end into the rest of the folds.

*It moved its wing slightly once he was finished, tilting their head in inspection.* "I thank you, thine friend yet again. I do not know what i wouldst have done about this wound if i twas by myself; admittedly i hast never been injured before.. not.. this much at least."

“Really? With an injury as severe as this one, I doubt you would bode well on your own,” Adonis remarked.

“I’m glad I could be of help, though. Now, would you like anything? Food, water?”

"mm.." *It hummed, thinking for a moment.* "Perchance thou couldst show me a bit around Pharloom? Thou couldst carry thineself within thou's bag that I hast turned into a nest, with once again your aid."

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“Well…I doubt I can walk very far, but I suppose I can take you to the moors,” Adonis suggested, “The issue is it perpetually rains there.”

*Vest grumbled.* "of course it's rain...... Dost thee perchance have anything that I couldst be covered with to protect thineself from thay wretched water?"

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“Hmmm…” Adonis’ gaze landed on the side of the bag, where a flap hung limply beneath the layers of sticks and twigs.

“Perhaps this?” He lifted up the flap for Vest to see.

*It tilted its head, looking at the flap as it thought.* "I suppose that shall be sufficient. I simply hope that it shall work.."

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“It probably should. As far as I can tell, the material should be able to repel water,” said Adonis, “However, let’s see if it can cover you enough…”

"Then we shall test it!" *Vest hopped into the bag, spinning around in it once before settling down.*

As soon as Vest settled down, Adonis folded the flap over them. It almost completely covered them comfortably, but still left enough room in front of their face to see out of the bag.

“Works like a charm!” Adonis remarked happily.

*They stuck their head out of the flap, looking up at Adonis.* "I am ready whenever thou is, thine friend!"

[adonis-the-cloaked]

Adonis responded with a nod, carefully picking up the bag by its strap before slowly slipping it onto his shoulder. The weight made him stumble, but he quickly grabbed the bed post before he could fall.

“Agh—sorry about that,” He apologized profusely, “Are you alright there, my friend?”

*They flinched a little when he stumbled.* "I am indeed, if thou needs any breaks along the way thou take them. I wouldst prefer thou dost not faint.."

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“Noted, thanks. I wouldn’t want to, either…” said Adonis, taking a few seconds to steady himself before slowly releasing the bed post. Once he was ready, he made his way to the door, opening it and stepping outside.

The walk to the Greymoor entrance went smoothly, but as soon as they reached the other side, Adonis began to slow down. He stopped at the side of the tunnel, one hand resting on the wall.

*Vest looked up at him in worry once he stopped and put his hand on the wall.* "Dost thee need to sit?"

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“No, no, I’ll be fine. As long as I just stop for a moment,” Adonis assured them. Perhaps it was the lighting, but the hand that was resting on the wall almost looked as though it were melting, given what looked like clumps of chitin gathered across its length.

“Well, these are the moors. A bit drab, but the rain is calming to listen to.”

“If thou says so…” *They noticed how odd his hand looked, but they did not comment on it.* “If thou shows more signs of beginning to faint then I shall make thou sit.”

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“Don’t worry. I know my limits,” Adonis said with a lighthearted snicker before continuing onward. As soon as they stepped out of the tunnel’s shelter, rain immediately began to splatter upon them. Thanks to the waterproof bag flap, Vest was safe and dry—but of course the one who was carrying them was far from spared.

*They tucked their head back into the bag to avoid their head getting wet.* “Ist thee going to be alright with the rain?”

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“Oh, I’ll be fine! This is quite normal for me, anyway—all I have to do is take off my cloak when we get home and…” Adonis trailed off, realizing what that would entail.

“A-Ah…”

”……. if thou needs when we return i may wait outside of thou’s abode..” *They offered after a moment of awkward silence.*

“No, no, I can’t ask you to do that! You’ll be waiting outside for hours and that just isn’t right,” Adonis protested.

“I’ll figure something out when we get back…”

”I do not mind having to wait, I am rather patient.. If thou needs I to wait outside once we return i shall..”

Adonis shook his head.

“Thank you, my friend. But I can’t just kick you out of my house like that, even if for just a couple of hours. If anything, I should be the one to figure out the alternative.”

*Vest sighed,* “Very well.. Shall we continue this excursion?”

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“Mm-hm. We shall,” Adonis said with a nod, continuing to walk.

*They looked out at their surroundings from their bag-nest. Even though it didn’t enjoy that it was raining, it did like seeing more of Pharloom.* “Dost thee know any of the history of Pharloom? I tis curious about its whereabouts.”

“Not a lot, but as a former pilgrim, I do know some things,” said Adonis, pausing a moment to recollect what he knew about the land.

“Pharloom is a land ruled by a higher being of silk, worshipped by the golden Citadel of Song far above. If a pilgrim were to venture through these lands and successfully bypass its many trials and tribulations, all while being armed with nothing but a pure heart of faith and devotion, they were allowed to join the Citadel Choir and its eternal song. The Citadel is said to be a paradise, full of luxuries and comfort…”

*Vest listened carefully to his words, tilting their head a few times.* “That is rather interesting… I hast never heard of such a practice before…”

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“It is fascinating, indeed,” Adonis agreed, “But other than that, I’m lacking much knowledge about the rest of the land. I did hear vaguely that some of the regions had individual rulers, but ever since the Citadel was built they just…vanished?”

[void-drenched-feathers]

”mmm.. Perchance the Citadel was the reason they disappeared.” *They suggested.*

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“I think so, too. It can’t just be a coincidence,” said Adonis with a thoughtful hum.

“What about your homeland? You said you came from a faraway kingdom. What was it like?”

”Ah, Hallownest! It is quite the sight to behold, all though most of it hast been long abandoned. I hast grown up in Greenpath, quite the luscious place with many a nesting spots and flocks of other Maskflies such as I! …ah… but I dost miss it so, however Pharloom from what I hast seen so far has quite the sights as well!”

“That sounds lovely,” Adonis remarked, “Though…why is most of it abandoned? What happened?”

”Ah, I am unsure… It hast been that way for many generations. Though it seemed to have quite the population back in the day! There ist an entire city that constantly rains, similar to these Moors though there is a lot more shelter from the rain than here..” *They explained.*

“Huh, who knew another kingdom would also have a region that perpetually rains?” Adonis mused.

“From what I’m hearing, this kingdom sounds like a fascinating place. If my shell weren’t so weak, I would probably consider traveling there…”

"Mayhaps if your shell ever strengthens you could visit? I wouldst lead you there most likely if thou wishes."

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“Maybe. I’m honestly unsure of it ever would but…let’s stay optimistic, shall we?” Adonis said with a half-hearted chuckle.

*It chuckled as well, though it was mostly forced.* "Heh... I suppose so..." *It then went silent, looking around at their surroundings again.*

The silence, save for the sound of the rain, stretched on for a while as Adonis walked. Shapes of windmills can be seen in the far off distance. Fluttermites hovered about in some areas.

Eventually, Adonis began to slow down again. He ducked into the nearest shelter before plopping down.

*Vest poked its head out of the bag, looking worryingly over at Adonis.* "Ist thee alright?"

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“I am. Just need a break again, is all,” Adonis responded, leaning against the wall behind him. Given his current stance, he seemed quite worn out from the walk.

*They climbed out of the bag, waddling around a little in the small shelter before hopping up onto Adonis' lap and essentially loafing there.*

[adonis-the-cloaked]

Adonis flinched slightly, looking at them in surprise before relaxing, unable to contain a smile at the sight.

“So,” He said, “What do you think about these moors?”

"Despite it's rather dull color pallet and rain.., it is quite the sight. It is rather serene and.. tranquil." *It replied, looking out at the rain.*

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“I concur. It’s why I enjoy walking here from time to time,” Adonis said, “It’s very peaceful.”

"I can see why." *It said before tucking its face into is mane, their (non-injured) wing twitching a little.*

There was only silence for a moment, and then Adonis spoke again.

“How’s your wing doing? Does it hurt any less right now?”

"It dost not hurt at all, actually! I am quite relieved at such. Though if i were to move it too much, it shall begin to ache once again." *They answered, looking down at their bandaged wing.*

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“That’s good to hear,” Adonis said, a smile in his tone, “I’m no medical expert by all means, but try not to keep your wing too still, either. Some movement helps with the blood flow.

“You’ve been feeling alright this whole time, haven’t you? Nothing unusual?”

"Not anything yet, why dost thee ask?" *It tilted its head.*

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“Well…it’s because of the black substance on your feathers. When I was dressing your wound both times, it seemed like it was trying to enter it. I just fear it could have succeeded and might harm you from the inside,” Adonis explained.

[void-drenched-feathers]

*They stared at him for a good 10 seconds before it spoke again.* "it... waht." *It stood up, though stayed on his lap.* "That ist not good... That- oh no-" *It started to pace, but it really was just spinning in circles.*

[adonis-the-cloaked]

“I tried my best to keep it out. I didn’t clean the wound completely, after all; it’s your blood that’s keeping it at bay,” Adonis said, trying his best to assure them despite some alarm starting to creep into his voice.

*It's spinning sped up a little before it stopped, facing him.* "I dost not want this.. substance. Inside of me! It ist already the burden on thineself's feathers! It is thick and- eugh- WET. It makes it hard for I to fly- to move really-" *It started to panic a bit, resuming its spin-pacing.*

“Friend, please calm yourself,” Adonis urged, lightly touching them on the side, “I don’t think it actually managed to enter your wound. I’m quite sure; I was watching it the entire time I was treating you. Everything will be alright. You’ll be alright.”

*It flinched as it got touched, though it calmed down a little, it's spins stopping again.* "B-but what if it hast already???"

“Then…”

Adonis thought. It’s hard to tell what’s going on in his head, especially not with his expressions unseen.

“We’ll have to wait and see if there’s any symptoms. And if there are, well…I could look for a physician, maybe? Or anyone who knows how to deal with these sorts of things.” He didn’t seem very sure about the last part.

*Vest let out a sad whimper, plopping back down in defeat.*

“Hey,” Adonis gently patted their side.

“No matter what happens, I’ll be here for you, okay? I won’t let you suffer on your own.”

*It managed a smile.* "I cannot thank thee enough, thine companion. I dost not know what id do if thou wouldst not aid I.."

“You’re very welcome, my friend…I’m just happy to be able to help where I can.”

Adonis looked around for a moment before turning back to face them.

“Well…would you like to see more of the moors, or have you seen enough of its drear?”

"I wouldst like to return back to thou's abode, though I wouldst like to rest for a bit longer." *They replied, tucking their legs underneath themself and their wings at their side.*

“Alright. We’ll rest, then,” said Adonis with a nod.

“Huh, who knew another kingdom would also have a region that perpetually rains?” Adonis mused.

“From what I’m hearing, this kingdom sounds like a fascinating place. If my shell weren’t so weak, I would probably consider traveling there…”

"Mayhaps if your shell ever strengthens you could visit? I wouldst lead you there most likely if thou wishes."

“Maybe. I’m honestly unsure of it ever would but…let’s stay optimistic, shall we?” Adonis said with a half-hearted chuckle.

*It chuckled as well, though it was mostly forced.* "Heh... I suppose so..." *It then went silent, looking around at their surroundings again.*

The silence, save for the sound of the rain, stretched on for a while as Adonis walked. Shapes of windmills can be seen in the far off distance. Fluttermites hovered about in some areas.

Eventually, Adonis began to slow down again. He ducked into the nearest shelter before plopping down.

*Vest poked its head out of the bag, looking worryingly over at Adonis.* "Ist thee alright?"

“I am. Just need a break again, is all,” Adonis responded, leaning against the wall behind him. Given his current stance, he seemed quite worn out from the walk.

*They climbed out of the bag, waddling around a little in the small shelter before hopping up onto Adonis' lap and essentially loafing there.*

Adonis flinched slightly, looking at them in surprise before relaxing, unable to contain a smile at the sight.

“So,” He said, “What do you think about these moors?”

"Despite it's rather dull color pallet and rain.., it is quite the sight. It is rather serene and.. tranquil." *It replied, looking out at the rain.*

“I concur. It’s why I enjoy walking here from time to time,” Adonis said, “It’s very peaceful.”

"I can see why." *It said before tucking its face into is mane, their (non-injured) wing twitching a little.*

“How’s your wing doing? Does it hurt any less right now?”

"It dost not hurt at all, actually! I am quite relieved at such. Though if i were to move it too much, it shall begin to ache once again." *They answered, looking down at their bandaged wing.*

“That’s good to hear,” Adonis said, a smile in his tone, “I’m no medical expert by all means, but try not to keep your wing too still, either. Some movement helps with the blood flow.

“You’ve been feeling alright this whole time, haven’t you? Nothing unusual?”

"Not anything yet, why dost thee ask?" *It tilted its head.*

“Well…it’s because of the black substance on your feathers. When I was dressing your wound both times, it seemed like it was trying to enter it. I just fear it could have succeeded and might harm you from the inside,” Adonis explained.

*They stared at him for a good 10 seconds before it spoke again.* "it... waht." *It stood up, though stayed on his lap.* "That ist not good... That- oh no-" *It started to pace, but it really was just spinning in circles.*

“I tried my best to keep it out. I didn’t clean the wound completely, after all; it’s your blood that’s keeping it at bay,” Adonis said, trying his best to assure them despite some alarm starting to creep into his voice.

*It's spinning sped up a little before it stopped, facing him.* "I dost not want this.. substance. Inside of me! It ist already the burden on thineself's feathers! It is thick and- eugh- WET. It makes it hard for I to fly- to move really-" *It started to panic a bit, resuming its spin-pacing.*

“Friend, please calm yourself,” Adonis urged, lightly touching them on the side, “I don’t think it actually managed to enter your wound. I’m quite sure; I was watching it the entire time I was treating you. Everything will be alright. You’ll be alright.”

*It flinched as it got touched, though it calmed down a little, it's spins stopping again.* "B-but what if it hast already???"

Adonis thought. It’s hard to tell what’s going on in his head, especially not with his expressions unseen.

“We’ll have to wait and see if there’s any symptoms. And if there are, well…I could look for a physician, maybe? Or anyone who knows how to deal with these sorts of things.” He didn’t seem very sure about the last part.

*Vest slept in their bag-nest for a good long while, waking up a few hours later. It instinctively stretched its wings but quickly regretted it, hissing in pain from their damaged wing. It scowled, clumsily flopping out of its bag-nest.*

Adonis walked over, appearing instantly by their side. Despite his masked face, he clearly looked concerned about them.

“Are you alright? Has the pain not improved at all?”

"I hast forgotten about it almost immediately when i hast awoken." *It replied, looking up at him.* "Dost thee know how long it shall take for thine's wound to heal?"

“At a minimum, it would take…a week, perhaps? That wound you’ve gotten is pretty nasty. It would take much longer to heal than the average nick or cut,” Adonis said after some thought, before checking on its bandaged wing.

He winced. “I might need to change your bandages…you’ve bled through them.”

"I hast?? Even while in slumber??" *It exclaimed, staring at him in major concern.*

Adonis nodded.

“Even when you’re asleep,” He affirmed, “If the bleeding hasn’t coagulated on its own, it would continue to flow until it does.”

He crossed the room, grabbing his previous supplies and walking back over. He’d brought water again, a cloth and a fresh wad of bandages.

*They growled seeing the water.* "Not again."

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, this will be the last time. I promise. And I probably won’t be using a lot of it,” said Adonis, unable to keep the chuckle out of his voice. He began to carefully unwrap the bandages around their wing.

*The wound looked like it had been healing, though the void that clung to Vest's feathers still seemed to want to enter the open wound, luckily enough the blood was keeping it at bay.*

Adonis frowned, assessing the appearance of the wound. On one hand, he knew he should clean the blood away. On the other, he was worried that if he did, the odd black substance would enter the wound and do who knows what from inside them.

After some thought, he decided to compromise. He cleaned the corners of the wound, leaving just a small clump of blood to dry in the center. He hoped it would be able to keep the substance out, at least until the wound forms a scab.

He then reached for the new bandages and started to wrap them around their wing once more.

"Do be careful.." *Vest said, watching him wrap their wing.*

“I will,” Adonis assured them, his movements slow and methodical with each wrap. Eventually, he finished, tucking the end into the rest of the folds.

*It moved its wing slightly once he was finished, tilting their head in inspection.* "I thank you, thine friend yet again. I do not know what i wouldst have done about this wound if i twas by myself; admittedly i hast never been injured before.. not.. this much at least."

“Really? With an injury as severe as this one, I doubt you would bode well on your own,” Adonis remarked.

“I’m glad I could be of help, though. Now, would you like anything? Food, water?”

"mm.." *It hummed, thinking for a moment.* "Perchance thou couldst show me a bit around Pharloom? Thou couldst carry thineself within thou's bag that I hast turned into a nest, with once again your aid."

“Well…I doubt I can walk very far, but I suppose I can take you to the moors,” Adonis suggested, “The issue is it perpetually rains there.”

*Vest grumbled.* "of course it's rain...... Dost thee perchance have anything that I couldst be covered with to protect thineself from thay wretched water?"

“Hmmm…” Adonis’ gaze landed on the side of the bag, where a flap hung limply beneath the layers of sticks and twigs.

“Perhaps this?” He lifted up the flap for Vest to see.

*It tilted its head, looking at the flap as it thought.* "I suppose that shall be sufficient. I simply hope that it shall work.."

“It probably should. As far as I can tell, the material should be able to repel water,” said Adonis, “However, let’s see if it can cover you enough…”

"Then we shall test it!" *Vest hopped into the bag, spinning around in it once before settling down.*

As soon as Vest settled down, Adonis folded the flap over them. It almost completely covered them comfortably, but still left enough room in front of their face to see out of the bag.

“Works like a charm!” Adonis remarked happily.

*They stuck their head out of the flap, looking up at Adonis.* "I am ready whenever thou is, thine friend!"

Adonis responded with a nod, carefully picking up the bag by its strap before slowly slipping it onto his shoulder. The weight made him stumble, but he quickly grabbed the bed post before he could fall.

“Agh—sorry about that,” He apologized profusely, “Are you alright there, my friend?”

*They flinched a little when he stumbled.* "I am indeed, if thou needs any breaks along the way thou take them. I wouldst prefer thou dost not faint.."

“Noted, thanks. I wouldn’t want to, either…” said Adonis, taking a few seconds to steady himself before slowly releasing the bed post. Once he was ready, he made his way to the door, opening it and stepping outside.

The walk to the Greymoor entrance went smoothly, but as soon as they reached the other side, Adonis began to slow down. He stopped at the side of the tunnel, one hand resting on the wall.

“No, no, I’ll be fine. As long as I just stop for a moment,” Adonis assured them. Perhaps it was the lighting, but the hand that was resting on the wall almost looked as though it were melting, given what looked like clumps of chitin gathered across its length.

“Well, these are the moors. A bit drab, but the rain is calming to listen to.”

“If thou says so…” *They noticed how odd his hand looked, but they did not comment on it.* “If thou shows more signs of beginning to faint then I shall make thou sit.”

“Don’t worry. I know my limits,” Adonis said with a lighthearted snicker before continuing onward. As soon as they stepped out of the tunnel’s shelter, rain immediately began to splatter upon them. Thanks to the waterproof bag flap, Vest was safe and dry—but of course the one who was carrying them was far from spared.

If a pilgrim were to venture through these lands and successfully bypass its many trials and tribulations, all while being armed with nothing but a pure heart of faith and devotion, they were allowed to join the Citadel Choir and its eternal song. The Citadel is said to be a paradise, full of luxuries and comfort…”

If a pilgrim were to venture through these lands and successfully bypass its many trials and tribulations, all while being armed with nothing but a pure heart of faith and devotion, they were allowed to join the Citadel Choir and its eternal song. The Citadel is said to be a paradise, full of luxuries and comfort…”

”Ah, Hallownest! It is quite the sight to behold, all though most of it hast been long abandoned. I hast grown up in Greenpath, quite the luscious place with many a nesting spots and flocks of other Maskflies such as I! …ah… but I dost miss it so, however Pharloom from what I hast seen so far has quite the sights as well!”

“That’s good to hear,” Adonis said, a smile in his tone, “I’m no medical expert by all means, but try not to keep your wing too still, either. Some movement helps with the blood flow.

“I tried my best to keep it out. I didn’t clean the wound completely, after all; it’s your blood that’s keeping it at bay,” Adonis said, trying his best to assure them despite some alarm starting to creep into his voice.

“Friend, please calm yourself,” Adonis urged, lightly touching them on the side, “I don’t think it actually managed to enter your wound. I’m quite sure; I was watching it the entire time I was treating you. Everything will be alright. You’ll be alright.”

Adonis thought. It’s hard to tell what’s going on in his head, especially not with his expressions unseen.

"I hast forgotten about it almost immediately when i hast awoken." *It replied, looking up at him.* "Dost thee know how long it shall take for thine's wound to heal?"

“At a minimum, it would take…a week, perhaps? That wound you’ve gotten is pretty nasty. It would take much longer to heal than the average nick or cut,” Adonis said after some thought, before checking on its bandaged wing.

He winced. “I might need to change your bandages…you’ve bled through them.”

"I hast?? Even while in slumber??" *It exclaimed, staring at him in major concern.*

“Even when you’re asleep,” He affirmed, “If the bleeding hasn’t coagulated on its own, it would continue to flow until it does.”

He crossed the room, grabbing his previous supplies and walking back over. He’d brought water again, a cloth and a fresh wad of bandages.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, this will be the last time. I promise. And I probably won’t be using a lot of it,” said Adonis, unable to keep the chuckle out of his voice. He began to carefully unwrap the bandages around their wing.

*The wound looked like it had been healing, though the void that clung to Vest's feathers still seemed to want to enter the open wound, luckily enough the blood was keeping it at bay.*

Adonis frowned, assessing the appearance of the wound. On one hand, he knew he should clean the blood away. On the other, he was worried that if he did, the odd black substance would enter the wound and do who knows what from inside them.

After some thought, he decided to compromise. He cleaned the corners of the wound, leaving just a small clump of blood to dry in the center. He hoped it would be able to keep the substance out, at least until the wound forms a scab.

He then reached for the new bandages and started to wrap them around their wing once more.

"Do be careful.." *Vest said, watching him wrap their wing.*

“I will,” Adonis assured them, his movements slow and methodical with each wrap. Eventually, he finished, tucking the end into the rest of the folds.

*It moved its wing slightly once he was finished, tilting their head in inspection.* "I thank you, thine friend yet again. I do not know what i wouldst have done about this wound if i twas by myself; admittedly i hast never been injured before.. not.. this much at least."

“Really? With an injury as severe as this one, I doubt you would bode well on your own,” Adonis remarked.

“I’m glad I could be of help, though. Now, would you like anything? Food, water?”

"mm.." *It hummed, thinking for a moment.* "Perchance thou couldst show me a bit around Pharloom? Thou couldst carry thineself within thou's bag that I hast turned into a nest, with once again your aid."

“Well…I doubt I can walk very far, but I suppose I can take you to the moors,” Adonis suggested, “The issue is it perpetually rains there.”

*Vest grumbled.* "of course it's rain...... Dost thee perchance have anything that I couldst be covered with to protect thineself from thay wretched water?"

“Hmmm…” Adonis’ gaze landed on the side of the bag, where a flap hung limply beneath the layers of sticks and twigs.

“Perhaps this?” He lifted up the flap for Vest to see.

*It tilted its head, looking at the flap as it thought.* "I suppose that shall be sufficient. I simply hope that it shall work.."

“It probably should. As far as I can tell, the material should be able to repel water,” said Adonis, “However, let’s see if it can cover you enough…”

"Then we shall test it!" *Vest hopped into the bag, spinning around in it once before settling down.*

As soon as Vest settled down, Adonis folded the flap over them. It almost completely covered them comfortably, but still left enough room in front of their face to see out of the bag.

“Works like a charm!” Adonis remarked happily.

*They stuck their head out of the flap, looking up at Adonis.* "I am ready whenever thou is, thine friend!"

Adonis responded with a nod, carefully picking up the bag by its strap before slowly slipping it onto his shoulder. The weight made him stumble, but he quickly grabbed the bed post before he could fall.

“Agh—sorry about that,” He apologized profusely, “Are you alright there, my friend?”

*They flinched a little when he stumbled.* "I am indeed, if thou needs any breaks along the way thou take them. I wouldst prefer thou dost not faint.."

“Noted, thanks. I wouldn’t want to, either…” said Adonis, taking a few seconds to steady himself before slowly releasing the bed post. Once he was ready, he made his way to the door, opening it and stepping outside.

The walk to the Greymoor entrance went smoothly, but as soon as they reached the other side, Adonis began to slow down. He stopped at the side of the tunnel, one hand resting on the wall.

*Vest looked up at him in worry once he stopped and put his hand on the wall.* "Dost thee need to sit?"

“No, no, I’ll be fine. As long as I just stop for a moment,” Adonis assured them. Perhaps it was the lighting, but the hand that was resting on the wall almost looked as though it were melting, given what looked like clumps of chitin gathered across its length.

“Well, these are the moors. A bit drab, but the rain is calming to listen to.”

“If thou says so…” *They noticed how odd his hand looked, but they did not comment on it.* “If thou shows more signs of beginning to faint then I shall make thou sit.”

“Don’t worry. I know my limits,” Adonis said with a lighthearted snicker before continuing onward. As soon as they stepped out of the tunnel’s shelter, rain immediately began to splatter upon them. Thanks to the waterproof bag flap, Vest was safe and dry—but of course the one who was carrying them was far from spared.

“Oh, I’ll be fine! This is quite normal for me, anyway—all I have to do is take off my cloak when we get home and…” Adonis trailed off, realizing what that would entail.

“Not a lot, but as a former pilgrim, I do know some things,” said Adonis, pausing a moment to recollect what he knew about the land.

“Pharloom is a land ruled by a higher being of silk, worshipped by the golden Citadel of Song far above. If a pilgrim were to venture through these lands and successfully bypass its many trials and tribulations, all while being armed with nothing but a pure heart of faith and devotion, they were allowed to join the Citadel Choir and its eternal song. The Citadel is said to be a paradise, full of luxuries and comfort…”

“It is fascinating, indeed,” Adonis agreed, “But other than that, I’m lacking much knowledge about the rest of the land. I did hear vaguely that some of the regions had individual rulers, but ever since the Citadel was built they just…vanished?”

“I think so, too. It can’t just be a coincidence,” said Adonis with a thoughtful hum.

“What about your homeland? You said you came from a faraway kingdom. What was it like?”

”Ah, Hallownest! It is quite the sight to behold, all though most of it hast been long abandoned. I hast grown up in Greenpath, quite the luscious place with many a nesting spots and flocks of other Maskflies such as I! …ah… but I dost miss it so, however Pharloom from what I hast seen so far has quite the sights as well!”

“That sounds lovely,” Adonis remarked, “Though…why is most of it abandoned? What happened?”

”Ah, I am unsure… It hast been that way for many generations. Though it seemed to have quite the population back in the day! There ist an entire city that constantly rains, similar to these Moors though there is a lot more shelter from the rain than here..” *They explained.*

“Huh, who knew another kingdom would also have a region that perpetually rains?” Adonis mused.

“From what I’m hearing, this kingdom sounds like a fascinating place. If my shell weren’t so weak, I would probably consider traveling there…”

"Mayhaps if your shell ever strengthens you could visit? I wouldst lead you there most likely if thou wishes."

“Maybe. I’m honestly unsure of it ever would but…let’s stay optimistic, shall we?” Adonis said with a half-hearted chuckle.

The silence, save for the sound of the rain, stretched on for a while as Adonis walked. Shapes of windmills can be seen in the far off distance. Fluttermites hovered about in some areas.

Eventually, Adonis began to slow down again. He ducked into the nearest shelter before plopping down.

*Vest poked its head out of the bag, looking worryingly over at Adonis.* "Ist thee alright?"

“I am. Just need a break again, is all,” Adonis responded, leaning against the wall behind him. Given his current stance, he seemed quite worn out from the walk.

*They climbed out of the bag, waddling around a little in the small shelter before hopping up onto Adonis' lap and essentially loafing there.*

Adonis flinched slightly, looking at them in surprise before relaxing, unable to contain a smile at the sight.

“So,” He said, “What do you think about these moors?”

"Despite it's rather dull color pallet and rain.., it is quite the sight. It is rather serene and.. tranquil." *It replied, looking out at the rain.*

“I concur. It’s why I enjoy walking here from time to time,” Adonis said, “It’s very peaceful.”

"I can see why." *It said before tucking its face into is mane, their (non-injured) wing twitching a little.*

There was only silence for a moment, and then Adonis spoke again.

“How’s your wing doing? Does it hurt any less right now?”

"It dost not hurt at all, actually! I am quite relieved at such. Though if i were to move it too much, it shall begin to ache once again." *They answered, looking down at their bandaged wing.*

“That’s good to hear,” Adonis said, a smile in his tone, “I’m no medical expert by all means, but try not to keep your wing too still, either. Some movement helps with the blood flow.

“You’ve been feeling alright this whole time, haven’t you? Nothing unusual?”

"Not anything yet, why dost thee ask?" *It tilted its head.*

“Well…it’s because of the black substance on your feathers. When I was dressing your wound both times, it seemed like it was trying to enter it. I just fear it could have succeeded and might harm you from the inside,” Adonis explained.

*They stared at him for a good 10 seconds before it spoke again.* "it... waht." *It stood up, though stayed on his lap.* "That ist not good... That- oh no-" *It started to pace, but it really was just spinning in circles.*

“I tried my best to keep it out. I didn’t clean the wound completely, after all; it’s your blood that’s keeping it at bay,” Adonis said, trying his best to assure them despite some alarm starting to creep into his voice.

*It's spinning sped up a little before it stopped, facing him.* "I dost not want this.. substance. Inside of me! It ist already the burden on thineself's feathers! It is thick and- eugh- WET. It makes it hard for I to fly- to move really-" *It started to panic a bit, resuming its spin-pacing.*

*Vest slept in their bag-nest for a good long while, waking up a few hours later. It instinctively stretched its wings but quickly regretted it, hissing in pain from their damaged wing. It scowled, clumsily flopping out of its bag-nest.*

Adonis walked over, appearing instantly by their side. Despite his masked face, he clearly looked concerned about them.

“Are you alright? Has the pain not improved at all?”

"I hast forgotten about it almost immediately when i hast awoken." *It replied, looking up at him.* "Dost thee know how long it shall take for thine's wound to heal?"

“At a minimum, it would take…a week, perhaps? That wound you’ve gotten is pretty nasty. It would take much longer to heal than the average nick or cut,” Adonis said after some thought, before checking on its bandaged wing.

He winced. “I might need to change your bandages…you’ve bled through them.”

"I hast?? Even while in slumber??" *It exclaimed, staring at him in major concern.*

Adonis nodded.

“Even when you’re asleep,” He affirmed, “If the bleeding hasn’t coagulated on its own, it would continue to flow until it does.”

He crossed the room, grabbing his previous supplies and walking back over. He’d brought water again, a cloth and a fresh wad of bandages.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, this will be the last time. I promise. And I probably won’t be using a lot of it,” said Adonis, unable to keep the chuckle out of his voice. He began to carefully unwrap the bandages around their wing.

*The wound looked like it had been healing, though the void that clung to Vest's feathers still seemed to want to enter the open wound, luckily enough the blood was keeping it at bay.*

After some thought, he decided to compromise. He cleaned the corners of the wound, leaving just a small clump of blood to dry in the center. He hoped it would be able to keep the substance out, at least until the wound forms a scab.

He then reached for the new bandages and started to wrap them around their wing once more.

The Citadel is said to be a paradise, full of luxuries and comfort…”

I hast grown up in Greenpath, quite the luscious place with many a nesting spots and flocks of other Maskflies such as I! …ah… but I dost miss it so, however Pharloom from what I hast seen so far has quite the sights as well!”

Adonis frowned, assessing the appearance of the wound. On one hand, he knew he should clean the blood away. On the other, he was worried that if he did, the odd black substance would enter the wound and do who knows what from inside them.

After some thought, he decided to compromise. He cleaned the corners of the wound, leaving just a small clump of blood to dry in the center. He hoped it would be able to keep the substance out, at least until the wound forms a scab.

He then reached for the new bandages and started to wrap them around their wing once more.

“Well…I doubt I can walk very far, but I suppose I can take you to the moors,” Adonis suggested, “The issue is it perpetually rains there.”

“Perhaps this?” He lifted up the flap for Vest to see.

*It tilted its head, looking at the flap as it thought.* "I suppose that shall be sufficient. I simply hope that it shall work.."

“It probably should. As far as I can tell, the material should be able to repel water,” said Adonis, “However, let’s see if it can cover you enough…”

“Agh—sorry about that,” He apologized profusely, “Are you alright there, my friend?”

“Well, these are the moors. A bit drab, but the rain is calming to listen to.”

If a pilgrim were to venture through these lands and successfully bypass its many trials and tribulations, all while being armed with nothing but a pure heart of faith and devotion, they were allowed to join the Citadel Choir and its eternal song. The Citadel is said to be a paradise, full of luxuries and comfort…”

”Ah, Hallownest! It is quite the sight to behold, all though most of it hast been long abandoned. I hast grown up in Greenpath, quite the luscious place with many a nesting spots and flocks of other Maskflies such as I! …ah… but I dost miss it so, however Pharloom from what I hast seen so far has quite the sights as well!”

“From what I’m hearing, this kingdom sounds like a fascinating place. If my shell weren’t so weak, I would probably consider traveling there…”

“So,” He said, “What do you think about these moors?”

"Despite it's rather dull color pallet and rain.., it is quite the sight. It is rather serene and.. tranquil." *It replied, looking out at the rain.*

“At a minimum, it would take…a week, perhaps? That wound you’ve gotten is pretty nasty. It would take much longer to heal than the average nick or cut,” Adonis said after some thought, before checking on its bandaged wing.

He winced. “I might need to change your bandages…you’ve bled through them.”

"I hast?? Even while in slumber??" *It exclaimed, staring at him in major concern.*

“Well, these are the moors. A bit drab, but the rain is calming to listen to.”

The Citadel is said to be a paradise, full of luxuries and comfort…”

“At a minimum, it would take…a week, perhaps? That wound you’ve gotten is pretty nasty. It would take much longer to heal than the average nick or cut,” Adonis said after some thought, before checking on its bandaged wing.

He winced. “I might need to change your bandages…you’ve bled through them.”

"I hast?? Even while in slumber??" *It exclaimed, staring at him in major concern.*

He crossed the room, grabbing his previous supplies and walking back over. He’d brought water again, a cloth and a fresh wad of bandages.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, this will be the last time. I promise. And I probably won’t be using a lot of it,” said Adonis, unable to keep the chuckle out of his voice. He began to carefully unwrap the bandages around their wing.

*The wound looked like it had been healing, though the void that clung to Vest's feathers still seemed to want to enter the open wound, luckily enough the blood was keeping it at bay.*

Adonis frowned, assessing the appearance of the wound. On one hand, he knew he should clean the blood away. On the other, he was worried that if he did, the odd black substance would enter the wound and do who knows what from inside them.

After some thought, he decided to compromise. He cleaned the corners of the wound, leaving just a small clump of blood to dry in the center. He hoped it would be able to keep the substance out, at least until the wound forms a scab.

He then reached for the new bandages and started to wrap them around their wing once more.

*Vest sighed,* “Very well.. Shall we continue this excursion?”

“Mm-hm. We shall,” Adonis said with a nod, continuing to walk.

*They looked out at their surroundings from their bag-nest. Even though it didn’t enjoy that it was raining, it did like seeing more of Pharloom.* “Dost thee know any of the history of Pharloom? I tis curious about its whereabouts.”

“Not a lot, but as a former pilgrim, I do know some things,” said Adonis, pausing a moment to recollect what he knew about the land.

“Pharloom is a land ruled by a higher being of silk, worshipped by the golden Citadel of Song far above. If a pilgrim were to venture through these lands and successfully bypass its many trials and tribulations, all while being armed with nothing but a pure heart of faith and devotion, they were allowed to join the Citadel Choir and its eternal song. The Citadel is said to be a paradise, full of luxuries and comfort…”

*Vest listened carefully to his words, tilting their head a few times.* “That is rather interesting… I hast never heard of such a practice before…”

“It is fascinating, indeed,” Adonis agreed, “But other than that, I’m lacking much knowledge about the rest of the land. I did hear vaguely that some of the regions had individual rulers, but ever since the Citadel was built they just…vanished?”

”mmm.. Perchance the Citadel was the reason they disappeared.” *They suggested.*

“I think so, too. It can’t just be a coincidence,” said Adonis with a thoughtful hum.

“What about your homeland? You said you came from a faraway kingdom. What was it like?”

”Ah, Hallownest! It is quite the sight to behold, all though most of it hast been long abandoned. I hast grown up in Greenpath, quite the luscious place with many a nesting spots and flocks of other Maskflies such as I! …ah… but I dost miss it so, however Pharloom from what I hast seen so far has quite the sights as well!”

“That sounds lovely,” Adonis remarked, “Though…why is most of it abandoned? What happened?”

”Ah, I am unsure… It hast been that way for many generations. Though it seemed to have quite the population back in the day! There ist an entire city that constantly rains, similar to these Moors though there is a lot more shelter from the rain than here..” *They explained.*

“Huh, who knew another kingdom would also have a region that perpetually rains?” Adonis mused.

“From what I’m hearing, this kingdom sounds like a fascinating place. If my shell weren’t so weak, I would probably consider traveling there…”

"Mayhaps if your shell ever strengthens you could visit? I wouldst lead you there most likely if thou wishes."

“Maybe. I’m honestly unsure of it ever would but…let’s stay optimistic, shall we?” Adonis said with a half-hearted chuckle.

*It chuckled as well, though it was mostly forced.* "Heh... I suppose so..." *It then went silent, looking around at their surroundings again.*

*Vest slept in their bag-nest for a good long while, waking up a few hours later. It instinctively stretched its wings but quickly regretted it, hissing in pain from their damaged wing. It scowled, clumsily flopping out of its bag-nest.*

“Ah! You’re awake!”

Adonis walked over, appearing instantly by their side. Despite his masked face, he clearly looked concerned about them.

“Are you alright? Has the pain not improved at all?”

"I hast forgotten about it almost immediately when i hast awoken." *It replied, looking up at him.* "Dost thee know how long it shall take for thine's wound to heal?"

“At a minimum, it would take…a week, perhaps? That wound you’ve gotten is pretty nasty. It would take much longer to heal than the average nick or cut,” Adonis said after some thought, before checking on its bandaged wing.

He winced. “I might need to change your bandages…you’ve bled through them.”

"I hast?? Even while in slumber??" *It exclaimed, staring at him in major concern.*

Adonis nodded.

“Even when you’re asleep,” He affirmed, “If the bleeding hasn’t coagulated on its own, it would continue to flow until it does.”

He crossed the room, grabbing his previous supplies and walking back over. He’d brought water again, a cloth and a fresh wad of bandages.

*They growled seeing the water.* "Not again."

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, this will be the last time. I promise. And I probably won’t be using a lot of it,” said Adonis, unable to keep the chuckle out of his voice. He began to carefully unwrap the bandages around their wing.

*The wound looked like it had been healing, though the void that clung to Vest's feathers still seemed to want to enter the open wound, luckily enough the blood was keeping it at bay.*

Adonis frowned, assessing the appearance of the wound. On one hand, he knew he should clean the blood away. On the other, he was worried that if he did, the odd black substance would enter the wound and do who knows what from inside them.

After some thought, he decided to compromise. He cleaned the corners of the wound, leaving just a small clump of blood to dry in the center. He hoped it would be able to keep the substance out, at least until the wound forms a scab.

He then reached for the new bandages and started to wrap them around their wing once more.

"Do be careful.." *Vest said, watching him wrap their wing.*

“I will,” Adonis assured them, his movements slow and methodical with each wrap. Eventually, he finished, tucking the end into the rest of the folds.

*It moved its wing slightly once he was finished, tilting their head in inspection.* "I thank you, thine friend yet again. I do not know what i wouldst have done about this wound if i twas by myself; admittedly i hast never been injured before.. not.. this much at least."

“Really? With an injury as severe as this one, I doubt you would bode well on your own,” Adonis remarked.

“I’m glad I could be of help, though. Now, would you like anything? Food, water?”

"mm.." *It hummed, thinking for a moment.* "Perchance thou couldst show me a bit around Pharloom? Thou couldst carry thineself within thou's bag that I hast turned into a nest, with once again your aid."

“Well…I doubt I can walk very far, but I suppose I can take you to the moors,” Adonis suggested, “The issue is it perpetually rains there.”

*Vest grumbled.* "of course it's rain...... Dost thee perchance have anything that I couldst be covered with to protect thineself from thay wretched water?"

“Hmmm…” Adonis’ gaze landed on the side of the bag, where a flap hung limply beneath the layers of sticks and twigs.

“Perhaps this?” He lifted up the flap for Vest to see.

*It tilted its head, looking at the flap as it thought.* "I suppose that shall be sufficient. I simply hope that it shall work.."

“It probably should. As far as I can tell, the material should be able to repel water,” said Adonis, “However, let’s see if it can cover you enough…”

"Then we shall test it!" *Vest hopped into the bag, spinning around in it once before settling down.*

As soon as Vest settled down, Adonis folded the flap over them. It almost completely covered them comfortably, but still left enough room in front of their face to see out of the bag.

“Works like a charm!” Adonis remarked happily.

*They stuck their head out of the flap, looking up at Adonis.* "I am ready whenever thou is, thine friend!"

Adonis responded with a nod, carefully picking up the bag by its strap before slowly slipping it onto his shoulder. The weight made him stumble, but he quickly grabbed the bed post before he could fall.

“Agh—sorry about that,” He apologized profusely, “Are you alright there, my friend?”

*They flinched a little when he stumbled.* "I am indeed, if thou needs any breaks along the way thou take them. I wouldst prefer thou dost not faint.."

“Noted, thanks. I wouldn’t want to, either…” said Adonis, taking a few seconds to steady himself before slowly releasing the bed post. Once he was ready, he made his way to the door, opening it and stepping outside.

The walk to the Greymoor entrance went smoothly, but as soon as they reached the other side, Adonis began to slow down. He stopped at the side of the tunnel, one hand resting on the wall.

*Vest looked up at him in worry once he stopped and put his hand on the wall.* "Dost thee need to sit?"

“No, no, I’ll be fine. As long as I just stop for a moment,” Adonis assured them. Perhaps it was the lighting, but the hand that was resting on the wall almost looked as though it were melting, given what looked like clumps of chitin gathered across its length.

“Well, these are the moors. A bit drab, but the rain is calming to listen to.”

“If thou says so…” *They noticed how odd his hand looked, but they did not comment on it.* “If thou shows more signs of beginning to faint then I shall make thou sit.”

“Don’t worry. I know my limits,” Adonis said with a lighthearted snicker before continuing onward. As soon as they stepped out of the tunnel’s shelter, rain immediately began to splatter upon them. Thanks to the waterproof bag flap, Vest was safe and dry—but of course the one who was carrying them was far from spared.

*They tucked their head back into the bag to avoid their head getting wet.* “Ist thee going to be alright with the rain?”

“Oh, I’ll be fine! This is quite normal for me, anyway—all I have to do is take off my cloak when we get home and…” Adonis trailed off, realizing what that would entail.

“A-Ah…”

”……. if thou needs when we return i may wait outside of thou’s abode..” *They offered after a moment of awkward silence.*

“No, no, I can’t ask you to do that! You’ll be waiting outside for hours and that just isn’t right,” Adonis protested.

“I’ll figure something out when we get back…”

”I do not mind having to wait, I am rather patient.. If thou needs I to wait outside once we return i shall..”
