sometimes, nice wishes wreck would act on the resentment that's built up between them. hurt him (he deserves it). leave (it'd be better for wreck, in the long run). anything but the way his voice betrays his true feelings while he tries to pretend everything's okay.
but nice is selfish, and a coward. to lose his best friend–his safe space–the only one who knows the real him–would make what's left of him fall apart completely. maybe, without that attachment weighing him down anymore, he'd finally be good enough–or maybe he'd throw himself fully into the role of "nice", until the person he used to be vanishes completely. or maybe he'd just give up. there's no way to know, and the not knowing is terrifying, so this is better. pain he knows is better.
better still would be if he could actually do something about this, of course. if he could actually make things right. how they used to be, or how the two once dreamed that things could be. but if it were that easy, they wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.
"...last time i brought up the idea of overhauling your image..." he sighs, shaking his head. "it's not happening. so there's not really any way you could take on some of my work." a hero's jobs cannot be assigned to a villain, after all. except for the ones undertaken in secret, the ones the public never sees–really, wreck is more suited to such work than him anyways–but that's not happening, either. it's dangerous work in more ways than one and nice will not put his friend in that position.
"i can try to get you scheduled more often, though?" a more hopeful look, though it's undercut by an askew glance. "surely the fans have to be getting a bit tired of the romance angle being played all the time by now..."
...wreck does have a point, though. grand gestures are one thing, but the minutiae of day-to-day friendship is another beast entirely, one he's been avoiding more and more lately. "sorry, sorry. you're right. i've just been... anxious, i guess." like he always is, with ever-increasing scope and intensity. he gives another sigh, resigning himself to actually admitting something for once. still, his voice lowers in some mix of shame and fear as he continues, "i want to answer you, i really do. sometimes i'll even write out a whole paragraph about my day and then right before i hit send–i start worrying about our texts being intercepted. about us being caught." and sometimes, in moments of weakness, he comes close to telling him everything. he can hardly trust himself to speak to his friend, these days, secrets and traumas bubbling just below the surface, ready to spew forth. he can let these small worries slip through the cracks, now and then. maybe it'll ease some of the pressure.
