     this test is irritating her. too many moving parts - - - gliding platforms and bridges made of light and lasers and turrets perched in hidden corners. chell isn’t in the mood to deal with this right now. just the thought is making her head ache. she isn’t giving up, just going to sit on this platform as a bit of a fuck you to glados. take that, annoying robot lady. she’ll get up and do it eventually, or maybe wait until glados changes something with the chamber to make this a little less dizzying.      chell tilts her head back against the white-paneled wall and stretches her legs and arms, portal gun resting on her lap. she’s going to get nice and comfortable and maybe take a nap.

so she’s…really not talking, and he’s getting concerned, because maybe she can’t? maybe she’s one of those people that reads lips and – his hands really aren’t built for sign language, so he hadn’t even taken that class.

but his eyes follow where she’s pointing – the logo on her top, the name of a company, maybe, next to it? aperture – he recognises the word. aperture, like what’s in a camera. aperture – but it also says laboratory – and he only ever pays the barest amount of attention in chemistry.

but maybe she’d get more help from mr mccoy – no harm in asking, right?

he’s about to try and ask, eyes coming back down from where he’d been staring off into the distance in thought, back to the woman who seems more interested in the balanced rock.

“ um, miss? sorry, only. i don’t know – laboratories? you are a scientist? because, one of my teachers, you know, he is also a scientist. and – since my patrol is pretty much done for the night, we could always go and speak to him? ”

kurt considers, for a second, the potential risks there are in bringing a strange woman in an orange jumpsuit back into the house, but… he’s not about to be unchivalrous.

     the thought of chell being a scientist is almost laughable. she’s too impatient for the scientific method, all that about putting together theories and hypothesis and having to go through multiple tests in order to even get funding to maybe prove our point. it seems like a waste of time, really, all that processing. or at least a waste of her time. and besides, she’s met more than enough science types in her life.      chell shakes her head at him and sighs, wishing her voice would suddenly jump back into her throat so she could ask for some help, maybe, but not from your scientist friend, i don’t really like scientists anymore, thanks. instead she pauses and then rolls her shoulders. ok. she can figure this out. talking to a - human? humanoid blue person? she doesn’t know the right term for the guy in front of her - shouldn’t be this hard, even without proper words to get her point across. she’s got this, totally.      except she doesn’t, really. what she has is a portal gun, long-fall boots, and a tongue that won’t form words. maybe there’s some way to show that if you have some food, water, and bandages, those would be nice is what she wants to say. chell suddenly fiddles with the portal gun, tucking it under one arm and drawing red-scraped palm out from inside it. her hands are ton up. she hasn’t really had time to let them heal since the whole explosion incident. palms are offered up for him to see, a silent question about first aid.      it’ll have to do for now.

    she watches her go with a concerned look flitting across her face, then it eases up somewhat when she simply returns with a … she doesn’t know what that is. but she takes it in stride, nonetheless – everyone has their quirks, she supposes, so she doesn’t ask. maybe it’s some sort of storage unit? or some relic of the past? it looks harmless for all she can tell. as harmless as a charred cube decorated with pink hearts can possibly be.

    the good doctor’s newly-made companion appears to be ready to go, so she takes a moment to forward her coordinates to the others. as long as forwarding a note that the individual found is non-violent and willing to come without a fight. the last thing she wants is for anyone to overreact, guns blazing, then scaring someone who could surely become a new friend.

     a moment ticks by of pleasant silence when it occurs to her that she should probably warn the other woman about the rest of the team coming through – and the team waiting back at headquarters. Winston would be a little hard to explain, but she figures she can cross that bridge when she gets there.

     chell watches the woman carefully - - - almost curiously. it’s been a while since she’s seen another human up close. she’s stuck to staying away, lurking in abandoned buildings and in dark corners. there’s been a few people she’s seen in the distance, just figures without much dimension or detail what with how far they were. but now? she’s so close to another living person, someone like her with flesh and blood instead of metal and circuitry.      it’s almost unsettling. with ai they were programmed to feel what they felt and do what they did, even in the case of glados. but people? people don’t have programming to fall back on. it isn’t motherboards and coding dictating action and movement but their own nerves and mind firing off orders that they come up with. more unstable, probably. chell can’t be sure. it’s been too long.      the mention of friends has brows shifting to a confused looking expression as she leans back against the companion cube with a frown, nearly defensive looking. friends sounds ominous, and while chell is pretty sure this woman currently means no harm there’s no way to be sure what her friends will think. lips purse after a second and she gives a curt nod.      the idea alone of meeting more people all at once makes her skin crawl. as much as she hadn’t liked being in aperture, at least she knew what to expect from the ai there. in this place she has no idea what to think about meeting new people.      fingers flex nervously around the lead to the companion cube and chell fiddles a bit with the portal gun, shifting her grip on the inside trigger mechanism and shaking it slightly. just somewhat tense fidgeting to pass the time until these so-called friends show up.

he was like an star, his presence KNOWN no matter what. people, however, DO NOT gravitate towards him, but INSTEAD seem to be repelled. eyes that are like UMBRA PENUMBRAS, and his smile is shining bright. he radiates WARMTH and KINDESS, and smells like sun beams. his voice is SWEET, like golden honey, but LOUD as the bright color yellow is. his metal mind is providing him a LIMITED AMOUNT of words to choose from, and he tries to communicate SOMETHING to the other.

     you can’t meet the sun. it’s a ball of gas blazing at so high a degree he’ll be burnt up if he even manages to get close enough to it to shout. anyways, sound doesn’t carry through a vacuum, like space. does he understand that at all? or is it just a blind admiration of space with no real knowledge about it to back up such wants? chell finds herself wondering why this core is so - - - obsessed with the concept of going to space.      but she can’t say any of that, so chell gives a resigned sort of thumbs up. sure. space. yay.

                                 Gently, he lets her hands fall back to her lap, looking down to his bag to rummage through and pull out a notepad and pen to hand up to her. To do something how would be unfair on her half, a Doctor’s oath is ‘To Do No Harm’, and besides, she has nothing, and he’s not like that, “First thing y’ should write on there is y’ name,” he says, next pulling out an anti-bacterial cloth to clean her wounds with, “’n’ I wanna know what happened to you.”

     the pen and pad are taken with an almost smile and she sets to work writing her name down. ‘chell’ in shaky, bold letters. then she pauses - - - murderous robots isn’t a great thing to put down, is it? pen presses against the paper for a second before she keeps writing. ‘escaped testing facility. explosions. aperture science.’ it’s a conglomeration of things, but none of it is untrue.

so my cousins fiance died yesterday morning of heart complications that we assume have to do with the drug abuse he and my cousin took part in and his funeral is on saturday. my mom is thinking about going bc we’ve been estranged from my cousin ever since we found out that her fiance was hitting her kids and they got taken away and given back to my aunt, and my mom wants to support my cousin but. i really can’t go to it. i can’t go there and hear people talk about how great he was when i know he hit my seven year old cousin and denied them healthcare and had them living in a building with no running water or heat or electricity. and it’s just freaking me out because i can’t go to that and while i don’t think my mom would make me, it still sucks because i wanna be there for my cousin but i can’t make myself go to this service when i feel physically ill just thinking about it. i just! i d k what to do or think or say in this situation.

so she doesn’t actually speak, but, as far as reactions to him go – this one’s still ranking in the positives, since she’s not screaming and running for the hills. 

he takes a moment to look at her properly. apart from the strange gun held tightly in her hands, she seems to be wearing… a… utlility jumpsuit? in orange. he’s familiar with orange meaning prison – but he’s going to give her the benefit of the doubt, there. if she were some kind of crazed criminal – he’d probably already know.

“ so… well, for starters. we are in westchester county, new york. this is – north salem, famous for…not a whole lot. except being home to mutants! ” he points to himself with both thumbs. “ like me. mutant. where are you from, do you… ” he winces a little. “ do you remember? ”

     she finds herself zoning out a little as he speaks. it’s what she’s used to doing, only half-listening and picking up the important words. like she used to do with glados, only partially listening in an effort to strain the small pieces of critical information from insults and pointless chatter. so she only catches westchester county, new york, north salem, and where are you from. chell looks at him for a quiet moment before gesturing to the words aperture laboratories written in grey across the front of her tank-top.      there’s probably a better answers ( a town, city, or state ) that chell does’t remember. she’s not even sure what state she started in, other than there was a lot of wheat and fields. but the walk here has been long - - - it’s pretty safe to assume she’s crossed through a few states.      gaze remains wholly focused on him for another few seconds before flickering around them, taking in the street-lamps and the odd rocks he had jumped off of.

                     pepper flashes a thumbs up BACK at chell. while she finds it sometimes a challenge to communicate effectively with chell, they’ve sort of found a way around it. the fact that she has to WRITE her reports makes it easier in that way. the rest they’ll just have to figure out as they go. pepper doesn’t KNOW much about the girl aside from her past experience in this sort of role, but the rest is a mystery.

                    ‘ well, take your time, and once you’re ready to go i can have happy drive you wherever you need to go. same time on friday? ’

     chell nods. wherever she needs is usually a few streets over from her apartment, because while she knows stark & co. probably know her address already it still makes chell uncomfortable to have people know. she doesn’t like being vulnerable, and having people know your address is a step too close for comfort. then she pauses and tugs a thing of sticky-notes across peppers desk with one hand to scrawl out a message.       ‘would later work? hour or two. drs appointment in the morning on fri.’ she jots down before offering the yellow square to pepper.

     eyes never leave him as he looks across torn-up palms and bruised elbows. it would be all too easy for him to do something cruel right now, while she’s bleeding and weakened. so chell has to be ready to flee at the drop of a pin. but mention of pen and paper have her suspicious glance melting into something slightly more trusting, if only by a small fraction. she nods twice - - - once for the paper, and once for him tending to the wounds. both would be nice.
