it was a stale night in mid July when Charles Barnett took the family axe and gruesomely murdered his wife and three children. this would become known as the infamous Barnett family massacre. however, two of the five children survived. fifteen year old Finch, and eighteen year old Forest. Finch only narrowly escaped with the help of her brother who put himself in front of the swing of their father's axe in place of her. he told her to run and she did. panicked and dizzy through those heavily wooded mountains, she disappeared among the timber. finch was presumed dead, all fingers pointing towards forest who would now be the only known survivor of the massacre, whispers of satanic sacrifices spreading through the hills & hollers. he would be wrongfully accused and charged for the murders and eventually put on death row. years later as if reappearing through thin air, finch was found stumbling dazed and suffering from amnesia along a vacant highway near where the barnett family home once stood. this sparked a media frenzy. where had finch been all these years? she was what some would say as being "unstable" and ultimately was placed in a mental hospital where she would eventually escape, running to those endless stretches of road, on a journey to piece together who she was and what had happened. a girl living in fragments.

it is always a complicated situation when friendships turn into feelings. beverly is no stranger to it all. she likes finch, hell, she might even love the girl. but is she willing to admit it? what did she have to loose? already the town slut in people's opinions, already labeled an outcast and a loser. finch is the one place her soul is happy and yet she can not even accept it for herself. she is so scared. it shows in her green eyes glancing at her best friend and then the floor, uncomfortable.
finch is the only one who knows beverly truly. instantly they formed a bond built around trauma and secrets and everything in between maybe a few stolen kisses while high, and yet she is a coward who can not express how she truly feels. beverly takes a step back from the door silently conveying her choice. this conversation is over.
" go home, finch... " her voice once sweet is now sour and demanding. her green eyes flashing silently. even now, beverly is doing everything to protect her. it is for her own good she thinks and starts to close the door.
her dad was in town again - his truck waiting in the driveway when she had gotten home from school earlier that afternoon like a bad omen. family dinner turned violent as always, leaving finch with a fat lip and a faint bruise. it was her fault. she had never quite learned how to bite her tongue and that mouth of hers had gotten her into trouble more times than she could count. it was only when her dad was far gone into a drunken oblivion that she dare sneak out the front door and rush out into the biting rain with one thing in mind - beverly. she was her best friend, her safe space, the only person who could understand and make things better. except there was a problem, finch had feelings for her, and she had ever since they first met. she tried to hide it, afraid of losing the friendship they had built but lines got blurred and finch could feel beverly pulling away.
had her feelings been to obvious? had there been one too many accidental kisses? did finch ruin it like she always did? questions bounced around her skull as she tapped on the door, that smile on her face quickly fading to a grimace the moment she looked into those familiar green eyes. "c'mon bev, please." she resists the urge to wince at beverly's icy tone, instead she crosses her arms and narrows her brows, standing unmoving like a defiant child. "can't we just like - talk?"
