Poet Lies is a reverb soaked, shimmering fever dream of a record that sonically pulls from influences ranging from 1970s glam rock to 90s shoegaze and trip hop. Featuring contributions from talented local musicians from Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas, it was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas by Manuel Calderon - aka El Cosmophonico - known for his production work on records by Animal Collective and Beach House, as well as his own band, Estereomance.

A couple of weeks ago I posted about the new album from Permissive Rot - Brian Carver's (formerly of Christmas Island - San Diego, California) new band. I'm really, really enjoying the album - one of my favorite releases this year. I learned that Brian was also part of another San Diego based band Teenage Burritos.
Aside from Carver and Lucy Wehrly from Christmas Island, Kevin Gist (Plateaus) and Andreas Lagerström (Holograms) also lend a hand. Teenage Burritos is definitely a two-sided album. The first side is more insistent punk in the Kleenex/Liliput or Blondie vein. The 2nd side is more post-punk. Really, after the Black Flag cover, this gets more varied and nothing shows this better than "Kamikaze" (guest vocals from Pall Jenkins of The Black Heart Procession/Three Mile Pilot).
This was a joint release from Volar and Burger Records.

Christmas Island (San Diego, California) were active in the early 2000s and had a sound that meandered between The Clean, Tap Tap, and Wounded Lion. The fact that they were relatively diverse in their sound can be seen by the labels that released their music: In The Red, Volar Records (this release), Sacred Bones and Captured Tracks.
I'd listened to Christmas Island over the years and frankly was surprised to find out that I didn't own any. That will be remedied immediately. I mean, listen to "Poisoner". Couple that with the fact that Volar Records (also based in San Diego) is selling this for a mere $5 and, for me at least, this a no-brainer purchase.

Back in June we brought you "Calypso Heartworm" from the debut LP by Ice Balloons, the band featuring TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone plus members of Midnight Masses, Samiam, and Surfbort. Today we're premiering the full album, which is called Fiesta and which, despite its title, is only a party record in the most peculiar sense. Ice Balloons specialize in a noisy form of psychedelic post-punk that reminds me of Liars or TVOTR at their most aggressive and experimental, hawking rangy sonic explorations heavy on bass, rhythm, and outbursts of static. It's not the most approachable music, but it's certainly boisterous enough to send a room into chaotic fits of body movement. Enjoy the whole thing below before its release this Friday. Back in April, I took some friends out to Borrego Springs to meet up with Flat Worms so that we could shoot a video for “Red Hot Sands” from their debut 7″ on Volar (limited red and gray vinyl both available). After dinner the first day, everyone went to the market across the street and started dancing around, and after realizing the prime opportunity, we all went back and shot a vid for real for b-side “Petulance.” LA Record was nice enough to premiere it last Friday.
