It was dark out, a sliver of moon was hidden behind the clouds. The wind blew fast and wild through the trees. Tonight was different, there was no comfort in the air only harsh tension.
Tonight his family was the hunted. Keith sat silently as his parents pulled out their weapons, preparing for them. The vampires that were coming tonight.
The silence dragged on, nobody wanting to bring up the impending doom. A long sigh came from his mother’s mouth as she turned towards Keith.
“Honey, you know what to do right? Remember, you have to stay put and be quiet like a big boy, ok?” she said, a hand softly brushing the hair from Keith’s face. Keith nodded, he might only be 7 but he’s done this so many times, he didn’t think he could forget what to do. His mother smiled, “That’s my Keith.”
His father hushed his mother, listening to something outside. With wide sad eyes he whispered, “They’re here. Keith, hide!”
Keith ran to his little cubby, the sounds of his parents rushing to gather their weapons behind him. It wasn’t long being in the cubby before he heard his parents screaming, before he heard the gun shots. He covered his ears with his hands, not wanting to hear it.
When the screaming subsided there was just silence. Keith kept hidden, never coming out as he waited for someone to come get him. He waited for hours until it was morning. He stayed still even when he heard the police sirens and people coming into his house. It wasn’t until that officer opened the cubby that Keith moved.
The officer picked him up and tried to keep Keith from seeing the aftermath of what had happened. Yet it was everywhere. He saw the walls of his house splattered with blood, his parents mangled corpses on the floor torn beyond identification.
It was in that moment as the officer carried him out that Keith knew. He’d become a vampire hunter just like his parents, and kill the bastards who took them away.
