you know, he’s never clocked their speed. kind of silly now that he thinks about it --- why hasn’t he? barton brushes over the first question and heralds right into the anatomy of his own specs. “not anymore. it was harder when i was tryin’ to compensate for it’s composition with only the circus’ bare boned funds.” a pause. “now it’s just calibration for an old recipe. th’ trick is gettin’ it compliant with th’ boomerang arrow.”

the grin slips right off his face, & barton lets his arm drop, and swing absently in defeat. contemplating, he presses his chin into the metal grate. "some move there cap.” he’s mumbling, but his voice has been made hollow from the surrounding air duct.
“holdin’ a man’s coffee hostage---” a moment later batron’s boots hit the ceramic tiles with a silent thud and a terse groan --- his joints subtly popping as he stretches, grabs his coffee & joins steve at the table.
all teasing aside, barton yawns, his shoulders sagging an inch or two as he seemingly relaxes into the chair. “can’t rememb’r the last time i’ve eaten breakfast.” well, breakfast that wasn’t solely nutrition supplements, pizza & coffee. “thanks steve.”

it burns: the oxygen slowly creeping into his lungs with each pulled breath, the wound cutting between two ribs just beneath his tactical gear. it burned, but he’ll survive, after all, he’s had worse —- they both have.
barton’s hand moves first. a subtle twitch of a wrist, his palm turning skyward to sign back an easy: ‘ yeah ? ’ before he’s threading his fingers back into the wound’s girth to stanch its flow. ——— but there’s a sort of smugness to it, one that’s followed by a sort of papable air that’s carried between them despite the silence in his answer, and a damnable grin.
digging an elbow into the ground, he pushes himself up and forward. crunching in on his wound as he stubbornly makes for his feet. “anymore talk like that an’ i’m gonna cry.” he’s joking, even as his teeth clench together and the words are all but hissed in his movements.
the moment he’s on his feet, unstable and swaying , does he sober. “yeah, we might be.” he starts, gaze dropping to the red that’s pushing its way from betwixt his fingers — his knuckles stained white from exertion. “but —- who says th’ disaster we’re making will be our problem.”

he’s always thought that the arrowfam owned the corner on weird ( and sometimes incredibly dumb ) arrow innovations. Some won its way onto the list out of sheer ridiculousness — and some earned its way on the list SIMPLY by its name.
today, he’s proven WRONG. when he detangles himself from Hawkeye’s grasp ( damn that man was smooth, he didn’t even have time to dodge ), there’s a smirk on the edge of his shaved jaw. “Why exactly is it called splodie? I haven’t heard a name like that since — ah, my former mentor made the ‘handcuff arrow.’”
“why d’ya think?” barton shoots back, that grin still fixated against his maw. his fingers smooth from hair in favor of clapping the kid’s shoulder as he steps around him, the barrier, & half jogs out to the carnage of the still smoldering field.
“cause it explodes.”
he stops. cocks his head left & stares at his feet before sharply pivoting on his heels & marching back up to the kid. “th’what now? ---- did you just say handcuff arrow? th’hell does that even work?”

he’s not convinced; at least not with such a CHILDISH reaction. shoulders roll in that of a shrug --- well, as much of a shrug as he can currently provide, given the circumstances. “not m’first rodeo, pinky.” his codename, though, has his attention drifting back to her.
maybe it’s time to reassess the severity of the situation.
the room’s dark, save for a dull light from beneath the containment door, and if that little bee insignia is anything to go by, he’s in the HIVE. ---- or at least one of their satellite base. “if ya know who i am, then ya know yer not gonna get anythin’ from me.”
does anyone else ever think about clint & natasha running stark tower’s ( avenger’s tower ) security gauntlet? just? hear me out. i’m sure tony runs algorithms for possible breeches / compromises after each & every security tune-up he does on the tower. but what if he also asks nat or clint to “test it” for him. ----- it was probably brought up in the form of a challenge / dare.
& who else to do a B&E run on the tower than two top-notch assassin’s / spies?
well, the kid had asked, & who was he to tell him no? loosing the arrow, barton watches it bury itself within it’s intended target before twisting, cuffing the younger archer’s head & shielding him from the resulting explosion.
he’s damn near grinning when he lets roy up. “it’s a splodie arrow....”

barton grits beneath the pressure of her probing fingers. a thumb brushing over the mended gash along his jaw, a forefinger tapping inquisitively against the swollen apple of his cheek. the question is that of a formality, used to break the silence & pull him into the here and now. with her, stretched haphazardly upon his molting couch in order to pick & preen at what she could. it’s one of those little things that he’s grateful for.
he doesn’t have to answer, but he does anyways.
“yeah.” it’s one simple word, he knows, but the severity of his inflection has her hands stilling along the cusps of his ears —– her touch feather light; her eyes rimmed with a predatory caution. she’s one of three people who can touch his ears without repercussions. the rest? well, they usually walked away with a broken wrist. a fact she, & a few others have learned from experience.
“th’ house needs cleanin’ “ barton lights on.— voicing about the possibility of there being an informant within SHIELD while her hands drop away from his face, only to be replaced by his own soon after. scuffing at the wounds littering his exhausted complexion —- his agitation bubbling at the seam of his otherwise schooled mask.
a turned coat. it wouldn’t be the first time, & it sure as hell wouldn’t be the last.
there are a few concerns here n’ there, but he’s already stuck a pin in it & scounged up a lead or two despite the ordeal. with a breath, barton pushes himself to the edge of the couch, a hand clamping down hard on her knee to help propel his sore ass up. “’m dyin’ here, tasha.” he whines, though it has nothing to do with his injuries. “‘m makin’ coffee —- i’ll get ya a cup.”
