“i meant to arrive at the same time as you, but a sudden crisis delayed my departure.” a sigh escapes him – marius despises giving excuses and explanations, but henrik does deserve one. “i wanted to make sure everything was in order before i left for months. can you believe i left my sister in charge? i trust her, but i can’t help but worry.” he feels like he needs to vent slightly to the nearest person who will actually listen, and henrik’s type of support has always worked on him. “has anything worthwhile happened yet?” // @lindcll
THAT VOICE. she wouldn’t forget that voice, even if it had been years since she’d heard it. the young queen, at the sound ( could it really be? ) turned as quickly as she could, wide skirts swirling and spinning beneath her. it WAS. catherine audibly gasped, and an involuntary smile shone on her lips before she bit it back, attempting to remain poised. “marius,” she said, eyes wide. “you’re- you’re HERE.” catherine stepped forward, hands wanting to reach out and envelop him and ensure that he really was there, again. although only a couple of her staff were around, still– she feared maybe even he would find it forward. “there will be other balls,” the queen dismissed his remarks, waving the apologies away. her eyes drank in his appearance, trying to update the image she had held onto of him in the past. “far, far too long. i… it is difficult to put into words how thankful i am to see you have returned to court.” returned to me. she shook her head, still slightly in disbelief. “i missed— i missed your presence.” tentatively, she brushes a hand on his forearm, the lightest of touches, before withdrawing. marius had really returned to her. “tell me, how have you BEEN? how was your journey?”
it was slightly exhilarating to witness catherine’s reaction to his presence – at least she had not forgotten him. it had been an irrational fear of his, throughout the years after he had left. forgetting would have been easier, he recognized that, but selfishness was a vice of his that he didn’t quite know how to abandon. “i am happy to be here. i have always longed to return.” return to her, another piece of irrationality that he quickly brushed aside. years had passed and catherine was now the queen; surely she would have more respectable suitors than just a swedish duke. as she admitted to missing him he wasn’t able to hide the smitten smile that appeared on his face. it was like no years at all had passed. the feeling is still the same. “the journey was long, but comfortable enough. i kept thinking about meeting you again, so the days passed quickly.” he assured her, trying to achieve a light-hearted tone and even somewhat succeeding. “it will require some time to go over the five years i’ve been gone, and then go over what you’ve been up to during those years. shall we have a walk?” he asked and offered his arm to her.
the fact he had missed the welcoming ball grated him slightly – he had always enjoyed the flourish the french always executed with their festivities. and everyone knew a good party was the perfect way to make new connections and meet old friends. well, now marius would have to find connections elsewhere, but old friends were still easily found. and indeed, the sight of catherine was enough to make him grin. “bonjour, votre majesté. see, i haven’t forgotten everything.” his french was still impeccable, as it had been all those years ago, but he did love making quips every now and then. seeing catherine again filled him with joy – she had grown into a truly admirable woman during the years and marius was glad to be here witnessing the beginnings of her reign. “i apologize i missed the ball. i hear it was impressive – but i am glad to be here now. it’s been so long.” // @ofglcriana

he’s the duke of västergötland in sweden and i imagine he’s somehow related to the royal family (swedish royals hmu)
had nice time growing up with his mom, dad and little siblings
when marius was about nineteen, he went to france to act as an ambassador of sorts there
and there he met a nice girl called catherine who was the princess of france and they we’re crushing HARD
obvi they were good friends and spent time together but marius also kinda fell in love with her
but plot twist they never did anything about it :((( and then marius went back to sweden since his dad died
there have been letters though. a Lot of them
he chilled in sweden for a couple of years, getting everything in order and dealing with the difficulties sweden faced
he never married even though he maybe should have
but now he’s here! and hearing that catherine became the queen? he thinks it’s iconic
he’s really eager to see her again it’s ridiculous
