The Untamed costumes 11/?
Wei Wuxian's outfits 3: The wave-patterned robe and wide-shouldered vest outfit (episodes 9-11)
Wei Wuxian digs out this outfit from somewhere (his qiankun pouch?) when he arrives in Yueyang with Lan Wangji, Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang in episode 9. He continues to wear it during their travel to Qinghe and back to Lotus Pier, until he and Jiang Cheng depart to Qishan for the Wen indoctrination in episode 11.
This set has three layers:
The iconic red undergarments Wei Wuxian likes to wear; I made a separate post about them, so I won't be looking at them any further here.
Wave-patterned black robe as the middle layer
Wide-shoudered black vest as the outer layer
The long, sleeveless vest (the outermost layer in this outfit) has as it's most distinquishing feature a wide shawl collar, which has two folds (first out, then back in; I have no idea if there is a specific term for that). Based on the drape, the material of the vest is thick and heavy.
Just a little note here: I made a seach on some hanfu-blogs, trying to find what this type of long vest might be called. Turns out there is no clear historical equivalent in Chinese hanfu, but that this type of garment is likely the result of creative liberties taken by costume designers and graphic artists (who have possibly been inspired by the kataginu worn by the Japanese samurai; see this post for more info). But they sure look good.
From the close-up (click and zoom in the picture to see better), it looks like the vest could be very slightly padded (have several layers of fabric sewn together). And from the slight 3D-appearance, it looks like the patterns (both the main small diamond pattern as well as the scale-like pattern at the shoulder pieces) are probably stiched through the layers. The fabric looks like silk in the close-up.
The lovely wave-pattern of the middle robe seems to be woven into the fabric, which is thus possibly some kind of damask.
I think that the way the vest folds here supports the idea of a soft, thick material composed of several sewn-together layers of fabric.
The fabric with the scale-like pattern at the shoulders extends down to the waist at the sides of the vest. And here as an accessory a blue bracelet, to which is attached a cute but psychopathic mass murderer. Metal🤘.
The vest has splits in the back and at the sides. The middle robe has a split at the back.
It looks like the middle robe has at least one pleat at the front (possibly more but that is the only one that can be seen).
The beautiful wave-pattern of the middle robe. And a matching wine-jar accessory.
The sleeves of the robe are narrow as always, and have decorative stripes of the same diamond-patterned fabric that most of the vest is made of. So it seems that even though Wei Wuxian wears this robe occasionally during his second life as well (for example in ep50, when he returns to Gusu*), it was first designed to be worn with this vest.
*I'll deal with that separately, sometime far in the future 🙂.
With this outfit, Wei Wuxian wears the same matching set of studded leather arm guards and belt he also wore with the previous one.
And the same red laces as well. But something I only saw now: for the lacing, the arm guards have similar kind of U-shaped rivets that are used for speed lacing in ice-skates, hiking boots etc. Handy.
Phew! This got rather long and it's still not possible to put in cuts using the mobile app. Sorry about that!
Reblogging so I don’t lose this costume break down.
