Haru’s death was an especially sad event. After a series of everything that could possibly go wrong going wrong, Shu finally finds some happiness and comfort in the company of his classmate Haru, who had been in love with him for quite a long time. But, as soon as it’s found, his happiness has to vanish again. As another of his classmates overhears that those with less useful voids are going to be treated worse than those with more use, he decides that he just needs to show Shu how useful they can be. So he leads a group of the lower ranked voids out, and falls into a military ambush, forcing Shu and his group to come out and rescue them. In the process, both he and Hare get badly wounded, and Shu blacks out. In response, Hare decides to use the last of her strength to heal Shu with her void, even though that means that she’ll belled out before they can get help. As she dies and heals him, she still has the strength to smile, and silently reassure him that he’ll make a kind ruler. Finally, right before the healing ends, a remnant of the ambush notices them, and destroys her void, condemning her to imminent death. And so Shu comes to again, fully healed, only to see that Hare was killed and there wasn’t even a chance to say goodbye. Cradling her dead body in his arms, he has to watch as her body crystallizes and shatters from her void being destroyed.. He undergoes a breakdown during the next episodes, deeming that kindness is worthless, and fulfilling the fears that those with lower class voids would be treated poorly.
