Hey, do you happen to know what the structures on the right side of the plant are? They’re just little tendrils that curl around the flies, but I don’t see them in any Venus Flytrap structure diagrams! (submitted by @desertbat)

ahhhh you’re lucky!!! those aren’t on any diagrams because those aren’t venus flytraps; they’re sundews, genus Drosera, another kind of carnivorous plant!! these dudes are known for hitching rides in sphagnum moss and other mediums from carnivorous plant nurseries, and kind of….popping up where they shouldn’t be. most people consider them a bonus as opposed to like, a weed or anything, because you know….hard to be mad at Rouge Tentacle Plant. don’t know what species exactly you have there, but i’m gonna take a guess and say it’s Drosera capensis, just because that’s the species that seems to be grown a lot for widespread commercial sale.
anyway. i’ve never had any success growing sundews or venus fly traps, so what i know i’ve learned from various carnivorous plant forums and other experiences ive had around them, and as a result i’m probably not the best person to ask about functional sundew care (or houseplant care in general…..irony, i know). seems to be doing okay where it is for the moment, though. just vibinÂ
It does look like a Drosera capensis, and the good news is that they are very easy to take care of! If you’re keeping it indoors it might not be getting enough light, but it looks like it’s grown to a decent size so probably just keep doing whatever you’re doing. Here is a website that has a lot of good information about growing sundews if you want to learn more, and here is another page with a good basic overview :)

why does leaf.. make another plant
okay so a quick basic cell bio thing: cells can develop into different kinds of tissues, made to do different kinds of jobs. this is true with all living things, and the process of turning from a new cell with the potential to turn into anything into a cell With A Special Shape And Job is called differentiation and/or ‘cell fate’.Â
this is why stem cells are such a big deal; in humans, the fates of our cell types are very set and differentiated in most of our bodies, and unless it’s cancerous or otherwise Not Right there will never be a chance for like, one tissue to turn into a radically different kind of tissue. you’ll probably never have a swath of your arm start growing in as intestinal cells unless something is like, Super Wrong. this is because 99.9% of your cells as an adult person, while functioning properly, physically cannot make any other kind of cell.Â
stem cells are cells that can create new cells, and as embryos our bodies are pretty much all stem cells with the potential to turn into any tissue as needed in the body; this is called being totipotent, and from my understanding it’s kind of the holy grail as human medicine goes (imagine being able to grow an entirely new organ/swath of tissue that won’t be rejected by the immune system!). almost as valuable are pluripotent stem cells, which we have as fetuses, that are slightly restricted in what kinds of things they can turn into but still have a wide range of what they can create.
there are different kind of potencies from there, all indicating the abilities of different cells to make different kinds of cells, but what’s important to know is that in humans, by the time we’re born all that is pretty much set and we dont have many remaining stem cells, and the ones we do have can only make one or two different kinds of tissues (called being multipotent).Â
the nature of life of a plant is radically different from an animal, and is way more…dynamic, i suppose, meaning that…man i’d say probably 95% of plant cells are either totipotent or pluripotent. the only kinds of cells that are 100% not able to maybe turn into something fucked up are ones that have developed very complex structures or firm cell walls, or, more than that, are dead (xylem tracheary elements and bark cells come to mind). if you’re a big beefy stone cell boy and the plant has put a lot of effort into reinforcing your cell walls, you’re probably not gonna turn into a comparably flexible leaf cell. other than that, sure, they have undifferentiated stem cells in all their growing tips just to lay things down and set everything straight when it first grows, but nothing is really set in stone and many kinds of tissues can just……turn into other types of tissues if they want to.
this means that plants do not care. if they hit the ground and can put down roots, it is completely within their power to start generating root cells, converting over former photosynthetic cells and generating new ones, etc. so, if you’re a sufficiently large broken off piece of plant, as long as you can stay free of infection or complete damage from the elements literally nothing is stopping you from just growing roots and turning into another plant. you’ll have the same DNA as the plant you came from, sure, but who cares? plant life is anarchy. this is why we can graft the branch/root system of one tree onto an entirely different tree and have the tree just accept it. this is also how cuttings work.Â
it’s kind of cool, how incredibly, radically different we are from plants in stuff like this. the plant body is just so flexible in terms of where it can go and what it can do. the animal body is a super powerful machine in it’s own right, but the animal body also relies on being very consolidated, and bodily flexibility like that of a plant would be impossible to maintain on a ton of different levels (i mean, just look what happens when our cells mutate and begin to break the established rules of our body; they develop into cancer). meanwhile if a part of a plant dies, it doesn’t mean the entire organism dies, and that’s partially due to their manipulation of basic underlying stuff like this. i did not mean to fall asleep on a desk in the library for half an hour and then wake up feeling all deep and shit about The Lads but yeah thats why leaf make another plant

I’m sorry, but if you don’t think that D. baeomyces is one of the cutest damn things you have ever seen, you and I are never gonna see eye to eye. Of course, those adorable pink button-mushroom apothecia are not always present on the grayish, crustose, often wart-like thallus, but that thallus is an important soil stabilizer as it forms a thick crust that prevents erosion, which is pretty cute in and of itself. Sadly, increased nitrogen in the air and soil in grasslands and heathlands has pushed this sweet baby out of its native habitat, and it is now mostly found in low mountainous regions in nutrient poor soil and silicate rock. It actual does well in areas with heavier rainfall–not a common trait in lichens who are often out-competed by moss and plants in those areas. You may remember a similar growth form and color pallet on Icmadophila ericetorum (fairy barf) a few posts back, but the difference is in the apothecial shape. Sessile, round to blobby apothecia = I. ericetorum, mushroom-like apothecia = D. baeomyces. Both are precious babies who deserve our love and protection.Â

Today the Department of Awesome Camouflage is wondering if there’s any creature more impressive than the Lichen Katydid (Markia hystrix), an insect that looks like it’s actually made out of delicate lichen. It looks more like something out of a fairytale than a real-life insect, but that’s simply because the natural world is so freaking awesome!
Lichen Katydids are native to Central and South America. Wildlife photographer David Weller captured this mesmerizing footage of a Lichen Katydid somewhere in the Cartago Province of Costa Rica carefully making its way across some vegetation that looks like it might’ve grown from its own body :

ohhhhohohhoo now THIS is a treat……a case of dumb plant syndrome revealing a forbidden truth……
you see. strawberries are not botanical berries. they’re technically what’s called accessory fruits, meaning that in this case the ‘berry’ part is just an enlarged receptacle. the actual fruits are called achenes, which are the little yellow speckles on the outside of each strawberry and are generally dry, indehiscent, and only contain one seed per fruit (sunflower seeds are a more obvious achene example). Â
(the above was the best pic i could find showing roughly how the hell this happens, but i’m also going to put this one here because it reads like the strawberry is being publicly shamed for its achene crimes and i think thats hilarious)Â
so in terms of The Forbidden One up there….either:Â
1. a mutation or infection confused the the plant and it freaked out and made leaves where fruit was supposed to go (which, to be fair, big mood) or
2. something Happenedâ„¢ and all the fruits germinated waaaaayyyy earlier than they were supposed to. i….dont have much knowledge about like, strawberry seedlings, but after a brief google search it seems like if they’re all germinating at once they are not like, turning out like normal seedlings. on one hand i suppose this kind of makes sense because holy shit the entire situation like…is NOT normal to begin with, but on the other hand option 1 fits a little better. still, cutting it open would probably give the answer (if it has roots it’s 2, if it doesn’t it’s 1).Â
on a related note i fucking love plants, man. like. ‘make leaf where fruit go’ followed by casually making leaves where fruit would go is such just like…a plant thing to do. in animals ‘make arm where baby go’ followed by actually making the arm would be absolutely devastating in terms of bodily function, but for this strawberry plant its just like. look at this. its just photosynthesizing. like this plant has fully accepted that it just has new leaves now and has already moved on. like. our soft animal brains could neverÂ

saw some really good moss today lads. Just some 10/10 moss
here’s how my D. adelae puppies are going! it’s hard to tell from the photo, but the plant in the second photo is a fair bit bigger than the ones in the first. they are all the same age, but the second plant was grown from a root cutting, while the others were a leaf cutting.
