unpopular opinion but i think a ship that's not canon but both halves are canonically insane about each other is infinitely better than a ship that's canon and boring

forbidden fruit
na baek-jin’s younger sister finds herself heavily distracted by a certain union member
( A/N: this is everyone’s first and only warning- this isnt really proofread or edited. banged it out in like an hour or so and im now full sending it
im the biggest simp for whc and have wanted to write for it for ages so this is what vibe got 🙂
not really any content warnings beside some semi-explicit descriptions! this is part one of either two or three, depends on how i decide to pace it)
geum seong-je x fem!oc
na baek-jin always had eyes on you, whether his own or from elsewhere. the last thing he’d ever wanted was for you to be caught up in his world, with the daily violence and danger hanging over everyone’s heads like a storm that just wouldn’t pass. your reasoning had made enough sense; it was from a place of care and concern, your deep sibling bond overtaking rationality.
“if something happened to you and i wasn’t there, i wouldn’t know how to pick up the pieces.”
the words had spilled from your quivering lips with tears threatening to spill down your face. it was one of the few times baek-jin was left speechless. your persistence and insistence that you just wanted to be there with him had eventually broken through his walls he’d so effortlessly put up when it came to his life in the union and his life being your brother.
that had been a year prior. before you had been inducted into the world of the union, he made sure to lay down the law with you; no fighting, no getting involved with anyone’s business nor accompanying anyone out for ‘errands’. certainly not to meet with those were were involved from afar, either. you’d agreed to it without a second thought, reassuring baek-jin you just wanted to be there with him.
for the most part, you occupied some of the silence in his office. like clockwork, he would tend to his schoolwork, and you on yours. any visitors who popped in paid you no mind. no greetings, no goodbyes. perhaps a fleeting glance of acknowledgement, if that. it was no bother to you, either way. you weren’t there to play wannabe gangster. you were there to be with your brother, make sure he knew he wasn’t alone in his endeavor.
that, and you had an inkling of a suspicion he had warned every single member of the union to keep away from you. strictly off limits, no exceptions, you’d presumed. everyone diligently obeyed.
everyone but his right hand man. geum seong-je.
it was never subtle, but it was neither explicit, the way he turned his attention to you. the first few times he had graced the small office with his presence, his eyes bore holes into you. a smirk playing on his lips as he looked you up and down as though you were an enticing entree, waiting to be devoured. and everytime he turned his eyes to baek-jin, they glared holes right back at him, his hand on the table going white from how hard he clenched it into a fist. seong-je noticed, of course he did- and it only seemed to egg him on further. you were a forbidden fruit, and he needed a taste.
for a while it was just his gaze, which then escalated further.
you remembered the first time he had touched you. it wasn’t a sign of romance or filled with needy lust. no, it was to nudge you away from the sight of choi, who had dropped in to “check on things”- his way of letting na baek-jin know that he was less than thrilled of a recent development, or lack of one for that matter.
you had been standing off to the side of the front counter, scrolling through an app on your phone but not quite digesting whatever garbage it was on your screen. choi’s cronies had made their appearance first. the sound of their shoes thudding on the floor brought you back to reality. every member in the room stiffened, the silence growing palpable and thick enough to choke those who breathed it in. it let you know this wasn’t just any visit.
seong-je emerged from the back hallway right as choi descended the stairs; nonchalantly, he strolled into the room and paused beside you, his hand reaching your lower back and pressing ever so slightly.
a shiver travelled up your spine as his hand lay against you, heat blooming on your cheeks. your head had shot right in his direction, but he didnt even glance at you. the message was received loud and clear- leave. wasting no time, you were able to scurry back down the hall he’d just come from, waiting out the visit in baek-jin’s office.
the touch didnt mean anything, you knew that, but it stuck in your mind like glue; the way it made you shiver, the way he stood tall next to you, almost like a protector. you knew geum seong-je was anything but that, but the idea lit a fire in your chest that you didnt care to extinguish.
over the next months, the cycle continued. lingering looks, fleeting touches beyond choi’s visit. his smirk was burned into your mind, and you hated how late at night, you’d find your hand between your legs bringing you to the edge to the mere thought of him. you imagined it was him between your legs instead, working you until you’d scream his name through your climax, him guiding you through it. but that never happened, and it was always just you in your bed alone, shaking, sweating and panting.
you were so badly drawn to him, it hurt.
then, it happened. baek-jin, dongha, seong-je and yourself were at the bowling alley at an ungodly hour. you hadn’t paid attention to what was happening or what was being discussed; your loyalties lay with your brother, not the going on’s of the union.
leaned back in one of the sinfully uncomfortable plastic chair, phone in hand and headphones in when a tap on your shoulder brought you back. glancing up and pulling one of the earbuds out, your gaze met that of baek-jin’s.
“i have to go. there’s something that needs to be taken care of.”
you sat up straighter, your curiosity peaked. “is everything okay?” you questioned, despite knowing he wouldn’t give an honest answer or any details, whether everything was fine.. or not.
baek-jin nodded once. “wait in the office, we’ll be back.”
baek-jin was a man of few words when it came to the union and you intermingling. you’d already learned the less questions, the better. with a subtle sigh, you pulled yourself up as seong-je and dongha made their way to the stairs. baek-jin waited until you disappeared around the corner. even after that, he stood in silence for a moment before turning to leave. he knew he could handle anything as long as he knew you were safe.

you couldn’t pinpoint when you had dozed off, but it happened. one moment you were curled up on the corner of the couch in his office, and the next there was nothing. there was no telling how long you were out.
all you knew was that the loud slam of the door jolted you awake, your heart nearly skipping a beat. shooting up in your seat, you realized it was seong-je; a bloodied and bruised seong-je, at that. he sank into the seat next to the couch, scowl on his face as he pulled a cigarette to his lips and lit it, his hand shaking ever so slightly. your eyes widened as you noticed the blood running down towards his hand. he had been injured.
you bit your lip, swinging your feet down to the floor and leaning forward ever so slightly. “seong-je..” you murmured, eyes darting to the red spot forming on the sleeve of his almost obnoxiously orange jacket.
“i know.” he shot back, taking a deep drag of the cigarette and letting the smoke curl around him.
“where’s-“ you began, only to be cut off.
“he’s fine, for fuck’s sake.” seongje-je grumbled.
sighing, you got up and pulled the small first aid kid from a small box you stashed under the couch. you’d patched up baek-jin numerous times before, but you didnt think twice about doing the same for seong-je. as you pulled it out, he rose to his feet and began to pace about.
“please, come here, you’re hurt,” you pleaded, patting the couch.
“i’m fine, i dont need your help.”
you narrowed your eyes at him, getting up and grabbing his free hand, pulling him to the seat. he tensed, but his lack of hesitation spoke volumes to you. opening the small pouch, you sifted through to find some gauze and antiseptic. “jacket off,” you instructed. “unless you plan on cleaning up the blood youre going to get everywhere.”
seong-je’s eyes lingered on you for a moment before he put the nearly burnt out cigarette to his lips and begrudgingly pulled the jacket off. now on display was a gash, not deep enough for stitches but deep enough to pull a decent amount of the crimson liquid to the surface. with a frown, you tore open a packet of alcohol wipes and dabbed at the wound. he didnt flinch but you could see the way his jaw tensed.
“dont be a big baby,” you muttered, though the corners of your mouth turned up ever so slightly as he let out a half chuckle, half sigh. you cleaned the wound and wiped the blood from his skin, eyes flicking up to his face every few moments.
after maybe the third or fourth time, seong-je’s hand clamped around your wrist, but gently. you paused, looking at him fully now. his eyes bore into yours, and then down to your lips for a fraction of a second.
your breath caught in your throat, hands beginning to shake as you stared back, giving him the same gesture. your body betrayed what your mind screamed at you not to do; you found yourself leaning in slightly, eyes trained on seong-je’s mouth. he didn’t reciprocate the action, but he didnt pull back, either. your heartbeat thumped wildly against your ribs, so loudly you were sure he could hear it.
the door swung open.
with a startled jump, you pulled back and busied yourself with pretending to wipe a smudge of blood off his skin.
dongha stood in the doorway, smirk already on his face. the daggers seong-je shot him kept him quiet as he walked in, but it was already too late.
you silently reminded yourself to make sure dongha slept with one eye open for the rest of eternity.
