Her words send a shiver up Leon’s spine. He steps into the room with her, checking their surroundings.

“What do you mean, Ada?”

She holds up a finger to her lips, a signal to him, and listens. Leon can hear a scraping noise from somewhere in the walls. Ada’s eyes flicker around the small, dingy room. From the ceiling, to the stairs, to the ladder. Crossbow at the ready. Leon raises his gun, preparing for a threat he doesn’t fully understand.

“Ada,” he breathes. Leon’s arms fall to his sides. Too much time has passed for them to keep pointing weapons at each other. He watches her, hazel eyes fixed on him as she clicks the safety on and lowers the crossbow.

“Leon,” she responds, her voice a low, cool velvet. A voice that was unique to her. He notices the slight crease in her brow, but not the way she holds her breath.

The doors at the end of the hallway burst open. A woman, caked in blood and dirt. Her long, dark hair sticks to her face. Leon recognizes the crazed, bloodshot eyes. Sweaty, gray skin. The only thing that stops him from pulling the trigger is her scream. So human. Too human to be a threat to him. He removes his finger from the trigger.

Leon crouches behind the cafeteria serving line, a temporary position while he observes the courtyard. He lies in wait, eyes flickering to every bush and tree within his line of sight. A wisp of fur cleared the fence in his peripheral. If they weren’t infected, he suspects the wolves would have left him alone. The virus creates an insatiable need, a hunger against all instinct. Against all reason.

A scraping noise echoes in the courtyard. Rhythmic and unnatural. The sound becomes louder, and it only takes a moment for Leon to be able to see it.

Leon catches something out of the corner of his eye. A large, black shape suddenly appears over him in a flash. A strange noise erupts from it, sounding like something between a squawk and a rattling croak. He ducks and withdraws his weapon from the holster in a rapid, smooth movement. A black feather falls to the ground. Wings brush against the nearby foliage.

A raven. He breathes for a moment. Just a bird.
