Beyond repulsed that Ben Whishaw has agreed to whitewash a literal russian nazi in Limonov: The Ballad. A nazi whose pathetic existence would be forgotten in a couple of years unless russian director Kiril Serebrennikov decided to immortalize the romanticized version of him and market it to the festival crowd as a story of a rebel and avant-garde rock star. The Cannes Film Festival made a huge mistake by including this film in its program. Last time, Serebrennikov used the Cannes platform to advocate for lifting the sanctions from Roman Abramovich (a notorious russian oligarch) and portray russian soldiers as victims of russian war against Ukraine.

Limonov was not just a nazi, he was also a war criminal, taking part in shooting at the civilians during the siege of Sarajevo together with Radovan Karadžić (who was later convicted of his war crimes in The Hague).

Limonov is often described, I kid you not, as a dissident. Indeed, he was jailed in russia (for terrorism and attempts to overthrow constitutional order, after his attempt to gather an army to invade Kazakhstan, which he also believed should be part of the russian empire) and his nazi bolshevik party was banned in russia because he was deemed to be too violently extreme even for Putin at the time.

Later, however, he got to rejoice: he was ecstatic about russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2014, and actively encouraged russian men to join in this invasion.

And let me get this straight: there is nothing wrong with playing characters who were despicable people. Nothing wrong with raising awareness about history. However, there are big reasons to believe that this movie is going to whitewash and romanticize him, seeing how it's based on the book descibed the way it is.

Not to mention the timing of them deciding the make this movie, when russia is realizing Limonov's wet dreams by being the fascist expansionist empire he always wanted.
