It was during this fucked up simulation that Zion realized how charmed of a life he had lived. Every moment of every image, every scene that he had fallen into had been both more intimate and emotionally arduous than the next. He tried to keep his wits, breathing in, reminding himself that none of these things were happening to him but it was hard. So so hard.

When his eyes closed, he saw a new scene now -- one of the trainers who he had known as infallible, strong, a hero growing up ( the story of the Parkers were one of the many stories passed around the Reverie household, brushing shoulders occasionally at events ).

"Hey," he takes a few more steps, voice low and calmer than he felt. "I don't think that's real. I'm sorry that you have to see that. But I don't think that's real. I'm real." Be brave, Zion, be useful. Be kind. "I'm sorry for your loss." Though he didn't know if it was her loss, he could guess -- given all the other losses he had seen. "But this isn't real. We have to go help other people."

Parker's eyes snapped to Zion as he materialised in her mind space. This wasn't supposed to happen like this–she had come in here to help the students, and now here was a student trying to help her. Taking a steadying breath, she tried to focus her attention on him instead of the bodies surrounding them. He was one of the Reverie kids, and she was sure that her family had crossed paths with his before she got the job here–plants, she was sure it was plants that he could control.

"I know." She confirmed with a nod. "Still pretty damn real looking though." A nervous laugh escaped her, like it always did in uncomfortable situations; this really wasn't something she should be laughing about, yet she couldn't help it. "Since you're the one stumbling into other people's minds, any ideas on how to break out of mine?"

They were there for the same reason; to help the students. Just like Parker, he could not stand the idea of waiting while others scrambled for answers. Every second felt like too long, and he was unwilling to sit idle while young lives were trapped in terror.

Yet entering the simulation meant surrendering his own mind to the storm. No one was immune; every consciousness added to the frenzy. It pressed in on him, tightening his chest, turning breath into effort, heartbeat into pain.

He glanced toward the woman beside him, letting his gaze settle on her before he spoke. “Don’t go there.” He whispered, careful not to startle her as he stepped into the warped memory. “It’s only the past. It doesn’t exist anymore. You can’t let it hurt you again.” Easier said than done, he knew. Either way, the urge to offer something for her to hold on was stronger.

A small gasp escaped her as Parker became aware that she wasn't alone in her own memory. Her eyes locked on Jasper, but she could still see the charred remains of Andrew in her periphery, and she couldn't hold back the laugh that tore from her throat–the damn guidance counsellor was in her head! It was too funny. "Is that the kind of thing you tell the kids?"

Little did he know, this scene before them wasn't so far in her past that it had ever stopped hurting her. "Kind of hard not to go there when a computer simulation won't let me turn away from it." Her tone was light, almost joking. She wouldn't let him get more inside her head than he already was. "Any suggestions for shifting into a different subconscious?"

When everything had started to go wrong with the simulation, Parker hadn't hesitated, immediately connecting to a chamber and entering herself. Maybe if she had given it some thought, she might have considered that her mind wasn't nearly as impervious as her body, but the students were suffering and she couldn't take watching them on the screens when there was something she could do. After all, her whole life had been dedicated to running into danger, why should this be any different?

But it was.

Parker thought that she would have time to help some people before having to worry about herself, but the second she stepped into the simulation, she was right back in the rubble. The body at her feet was charred and damaged beyond all recognition... but she knew who it was. Closing her eyes, she turned around in an attempt to focus–the students needed her–but when she opened her eyes again, it was like she hadn't even turned. Andrew's body was still there in front of her, and it felt like the oxygen was being dragged from her lungs. "Fuck."
