“I know what you are.”
What do you think of the end of AWTWB? I mean, we don’t find out about Simon being Lucy’s kid until the end? It’s this huge thing just dumped on him? Like right at the end?! And we get a one page epilogue? Just Agatha?
Thanks for the ask anon!
So. I loved the ending. I loved this whole book and I’m in a good place with how it ended. We got so many answers! All through the book—so many loose ends tied up. And some things that are left open because the characters haven’t decided yet. And that’s ok. They’re 20 years old. They don’t have everything figured out and they don’t need to. I didn’t. I’m still figuring things out and I’m way older than they are.
I think Simon finding out about Lucy and the Mage at the end worked. He found the “family” first—he found love and acceptance and support in the Salisburys before he knew they were family and before they knew he was Lucy’s son, the child they were looking for, (using even the words Simon used himself when he thought about what his family might say to him when they found him).
I don’t think of it as “dumped” really either—it came about in a beautifully organic moment where he manifested it himself by drawing the sword, in a moment that was bathed in love and community, surrounded by food and people who care for him. A sword that didn’t come as a mystic legacy from a despotic general to his lieutenant, a weapon to be used in aggression and defense. This sword—the Salisbury sword—is a family heirloom, a symbol of family, shared blood, something that unites. It’s not a weapon. It’s a legacy and a bond.
And it is a lot. He tells Baz it is. And Baz tells him it would be a lot for anyone, which is true. It will be a lot to process. But he has Baz and a relationship that is on much firmer footing. He has a family that has yearned for him for decades, who cared about him before they even knew. He has love and support from Baz and his friends. There’s work ahead and processing and he’s trying. I think they’re in a good place. Some days will be hard. Some weeks. But they’re moving forward. Together.
And the epilogue is for Agatha. And it’s right for her. She’s figured out a part of her story. She ran away from a place and didn’t find peace. She’s back to that place and has found contentment, on her terms. It’s an end to that arc.
And as for the others? Their stories are just beginning. It’s a book about endings. It’s a book about beginnings. And to me, not having more in the epilogue about them tells me their story is moving forward. They’re carrying on.
🚨AWTWB SPOILERS🚨
“what a ridiculous creature. happy that i put butter on his sandwich. as if i wouldn’t make the world spin backwards if i thought he’d like it better that way.”
Ok here’s a list of some of the best parts of AWTWB in no particular order mostly because I’m putting them down as I remember them
Chapter 16, just chapter 16
“If you can’t be gay at Ikea where can you be?”
Shepard wasn’t actually cursed he accidentally got engaged to a demon because he thought it would be cool to talk to one
Talking about Simon’s sexuality, and how he doesn’t really identify with anything at the moment
Me during chapter 62: are they… are they doing what i think they’re doing?? surely not…
Me during chapter 63: HOLY SHIT THEY ACTUALLY DID IT
Penelope being a chaotic badass by deciding to just summon a fucking demon in her apartment and actually breaking off Shepard’s engagement
Simon and Baz completely throwing away all the chosen one stuff in order to help throw Penny a party in her honor for taking on a demon and winning
Shepard’s last name is Love (of course it is)
I don’t know what surprised me more, that Agatha actually got a girlfriend or that she became the goat herder at Watford
Honestly though, good for her she gets to relax and vibe with the magic goats and her girlfriend for the rest of her life
DRINKING HUMAN BLOOD IS WHAT MAKES VAMPIRES IMMORTAL SO BY BAZ ONLY DRINKING BLOOD FROM RATS AND SHIT HE’LL GET TO GROW OLD WITH SIMON
Baz making out with Simon in the apartment the Mage indirectly paid for specifically because he knows it would’ve pissed the guy off
Shepard just literally vibing this entire time
The Salisburys finally getting closure with Lucy and Simon finally finding and bonding with his biological family (emphasis on biological because we all know that his friends are his family)
Pippa finally got her voice back after Baz accidentally stole it in their 5th year
Evander trying to be intimidating but Penelope knocking him out with a single spell in less than a second
Simon getting a sword from the Salisburys
Honestly just Simon and Baz’s entire relationship you really saw how Simon was trying and there was so much more communication in this book and UGH it was just so good
Feel free to add any other things you enjoyed!
some of my favourite any way the wind blows quotes out of context
“Turn off that music!” Fiona shouts from the next room. “No emo shit in my flat.” I am emo shit.
She hands me a slightly smaller slice—fair enough, I didn’t kill the Mage—and sits down next to Simon to pour the milk.
“You didn’t get that vibe from me either, Baz. You’ve got no vibe … check.”
“No,” I repeat. “I can touch you less gently, but I won’t love you less kindly.”
(Genuinely not sure whether she means the vampire thing or the gay thing.)
“I’m texting Bunce,” he says. “Like I have time for another boyfriend … Your dysfunction is a full-time job.”
(For someone who is afraid of looking gay in public, he sure gets off on public displays of affection.) (That’s probably connected.)
“Because…” he whines. “Because it’s kinda hot.”
“Just know,” he says, “that I’d do anything for you. That I’d let you do anything to me. There’s nothing about you I don’t want.”
“If you can’t be gay at Ikea,” Snow reasoned, “where can you?”
I’m an “I love you” gun with the safety off, a finger constantly on the trigger.
A little comic about Simon's tail for @stardustasincocaine for the server exchange, 😘
the dialogue in this book has me rolling
AWTWB SPOILERS
i think about this quote a lot
Have we talked about how Simon was protecting Baz from the sun while they slept??? I feel like we need to talk about it.
I was going to wait to post this tomorrow and work on commissions today instead, but my whole house is sick with a mystery fever, and I need a pick-me-up.
I’ve never done a prom scene, but this was a lot of fun for all the lighting and depth of field effects. Someone mentioned in a reblog that they like seeing the process, so at some point, I’ll put up the various layers of this so folks can see how it came together.
“It was brave. It was brave and selfless and clever. That’s who you are, Simon. And I’m not going to get bored with you.“

I reread Carry On a few weeks ago and I just wanted to draw them

hmm... snowbaz au where they're in an unhealthily dependant but ultimately still loving relationship as teenagers and they agree to stay together forever, and baz turns simon. they break up, but decades later they're each in a better place and fall back into love in a new way
princely klance ko-fi comm <3
And here is the video process of it!~ This time with some subtitles, I tried to come up with at least something remotely useful to say;;
