Inline 6 = Slant 6?

Im curious to the position of thee early “Slant 6“ positioned engines  “Datsun Z, Jaguar etc.) as to the newer “inline 6 engines (RB28, 2JZ etc) . Is this a required position for a narrow bodystyle, or is it for balance of the engine?
