hey! so did you major in environmental science? because i'm thinking about possibly pursuing that in college and i'm just wondering what it's like and what kind of jobs you can get with it :)
I did major inEnvironmental Science! Obviously I can’t tell you if it’s the right fit foryou, but I can tell you that it was the perfect fit for me! I went into collegenot really knowing what I wanted to do with my degree; all I knew was that Iwas (and am) interested in the environment and how the world works. Theclasses I took were fascinating (especially geology, biostatistics, and acourse on reading and understanding scientific literature) but what really madethe difference for me was getting involved in undergraduate research, which Ihighly recommend- I went to Notre Dame, which has a huge focus on undergradresearch, so if you’re still looking at schools, I would say you should put theopportunity to work in a lab near the top of your list of things to look for. Idid an incredible ten-week summer program where we carried out our own researchproject and completed mini-units on different aspects of ecology, which let metry out a lot of different things without fully committing. My project was onmethane emissions from freshwater northern latitude lakes, which I only pickedbecause I knew the graduate student in charge of the project and I wanted towork with him. In the end, I absolutely fell in love with limnology and thatgot me interested in environmental assessment. I’m still job searching (whileworking a completely unrelated job; don’t be afraid to step off your careerpath for a little bit to follow up on other dreams!) but the kind of things I’mqualified for and interested in include being a research assistant in an environmentallab (like the ones I did undergrad research in) and working for an engineeringfirm, doing site assignments and studying water quality and all that entails.
(Here are some pictures from my summer research- if seeing all this beautiful nature- plus the Van Dorn, which is my favorite piece of equipment- appeals to you, you might be an environmental scientist!)
I hope this answered your questionsomewhat- thanks for reaching out to me and please feel free to ask me anythingelse!
MY FRIENDS ARE SO COOL
