This is one of the best times of year for college-bound White Whines. For millions of smart kids across the country, the college rejection letter season marks the first time that any of them have been told “sorry, you’re just not smart enough” and a few, like this girl, just can’t deal with that.

I had a disagreement this afternoon about requirements for admission and curriculum with a prospective student who happens to be deaf. The issue is that it was on the phone via a relay service. It was exhausting and awkward. Especially for the interpreter.

Why do you pick up your phone, just to tell me you can't talk right now?
Why wouldn't you have your voicemail set up on your phone? Isn't that one of the first things a person does?
Overdramatic
A student just told me through the course of a few emails that if I didn't admit him to my college (which is rather competitive) soon he would be homeless. A possibility? Sure, but he skipped right to homelessness rather than the possibility of choosing another major or even transferring to another school. Being homeless is the plan B he developed when I told him he should be prepared for the possibility of being denied.

A response to a denial of admission email.
RESPOND!
A student emailed me with five questions. Within two minutes, as I was beginning my response to the email, the same student called me on the phone and asked me to respond to his email. I tried to clarify and see if he wanted me to answer his questions over the phone. He replied (over the phone) that I should just respond to his email.

Crabby
I got called out by a person on the phone today for sounding "defensive" AKA crabby as I discussed an admissions decision. At first it made me even more crabby, but now as I think back on it I'm just embarrassed. The decision by the way was a deny decision and it was for this persons fiancee. I didn't make the decision and didn't know many answers about it, which is why I was crabby.
Submitting Transcripts
If you have a hold on your record at your previous school (likely for financial reasons), why do you think we would overlook that when making decisions for our school? If you can't pay your bills there, can we expect you to pay your bills here?
