Magic Mishaps
It was another late night. The shop was closed—well, technically closed. The sign was up in the window, but she was still there, with the lights on. She flipped through a book of spells from where she sat behind the counter, her feet propped up. Reaching for her mug of cocoa, she took a sip from it and returned to flipping. Mason had called her earlier, wanting her to look into something he’d found. It was a sort of portal. A mirror thing. He found it interested and asked her to consult the books.
But there wasn’t anything to be found and Andy was bored of it. Just as she was about to close the book, she found a passage—written in Latin. She frowned a bit and sat up, reading the words. It didn’t have any meaning, so she kept repeating them in her head.
Then she made a mistake that only novice witches and warlocks should ever make. She read it aloud. Her eyes went wide and she tried to rectify the mistake—but really, how could she once it’d been done—but shoving the book from her. She only succeeded in falling back, out of her chair.
And landing on hard, grassy ground. The sun was shining through the tree branches and she thought she heard birds chirping in the distance. “Oh.”
Yeah, she definitely wasn’t in Sunnydale any more.
Virginia sat beneath a large tree, her arms crossed in irritation. Wolf had insisted that she wait here while he went in search for wood, since it was so easy to get lost in the enchanted forest. While the plan made perfect sense that didn't mean the New Yorker was very pleased about it. Suddenly there was a sound like glass shattering and a very pretty red head fell on the ground in front of Virginia, who made a slight noise of surprise before scrambling to her feet.
"God...Are you okay," Virginia asked looking concerned.

“Huff puff,” Wolf muttered with a roll of his eyes. “Figures the prince can’t do anything on his own.” It was still strange to call the man they’d all gotten to know as a dog as anything other than Prince. His gaze darted to Virgina’s features as she asked about her father, though. Even he missed Tony a little. The man might’ve been stupid, but he’d turned out to be pretty brave in the end. They all had. And Virginia cared about her father more than almost anything. That made the bumbling human part of Wolf’s new improvized pack. His head snapped back to the bird, however, in shock. “Second Kingdom—but thats’ home!” He glanced back at Virginia worriedly. “The Second Kingdom is plagued by bad wolfs and almost constant civil war between the north and south. And that’s a normal day.” How could a place as chaotic as his birthplace be assigned ‘unrest’?
Virginia put her free hand on Wolf’s shoulder in an attempt to comfort him a little. If Wolf’s home was half as chaotic as he said, ‘unrest’ didn’t bode well. “Your questions will be answered when you reach the castle,” the bird said, “You may call on us to help but three times. Knowing how much trouble you seem to get yourself into, you’ll need it.” And with that the magic sparrow flew off, presumably back towards where the mirror’s entry point to her world was. After a moment Virginia sighed and ran a hand through her hair. “Here we go again…”
Wolf started another question when the bird darted away. He growled a little, wishing the little things weren’t so frustratingly quick. “Magic birds,” he muttered, scratching at his temple briefly. “Always so cryptic.” His irritation faded a little, however, at the realization that they were going back. Virginia’s sigh only confirmed that. “Cripes, I can hardly believe it!” he exclaimed. “Back to the Nine Kingdoms in under a year. Who would’ve guessed? Huff puff, this calls for packing. Entirely food of course.” Did it matter that the traveling mirror linked them directly from Central Park to one of wings at Wendell’s palace? Not at all. It called for packed lunch. Wolf’s rambling and bustling trailed off however, as he realized that going back meant sad things as well. Sad things like telling Tony he wasn’t going to be a Granddad after all.
Virginia was quiet a moment. Trying to sort out her thoughts. She nodded vaguely as Wolf rambled on about what food to pack. When he trailed off she looked up at him. "Food would be good. We'll need other things too. We weren't exactly prepared last time we were there." She was purposely avoiding what they were both thinking. How was she going to tell dad that they's lost the baby..."Um...I'm sure Wendell will give us some things when we get there...but go ahead and pack some food. I doubt they'll be prepared for how much you eat," she said with a small smile.
((Headcannon:))
Virginia's hair has grown out a little since the hair cut with the magic axe. It's a little on the shaggy side. Just past her ears. With bits sometimes sticking up in all directions which tends to drive her crazy. It gets even worse since she tends to run her hair through it when she thinks or worried about something.

Tasks that would have seemed menial to most were pleasant to Wolf. It was nice. It was so very nice. The nicest. He’d never had anything to call his own. Not really. Such was the life of a Wolf without a pack. But now he had the diner and employees and Virginia. And he was mostly used to the strange magic of her world. Wolfies were good at adapting, after all, and the Tenth Kingdom was full of exciting things. But he was happiest here. In these sort of moments, with his Virginia within earshot, if not always eyeline. And he could always smell her. No matter where she went or how far, he could find his soulmate.
His head tilted sharply at a high-pitched, almost non-existent noise, and he sniffed at the air, sifting through the multiple delectable food scents. It was familiar. It was…
At Virginia’s yell, he dropped everything he was doing—which thankfully was only a piece of paper and a pen—and darted around the corner. With an audible gasp, he finally identified the scent at the sight of the brightly-feathered bird. “Magic birds! Here?” Arriving at Virginia’s side, he processed something else and chose to address Virginia rather than the little sparrows that had a special fondness for his fiancee. He frowned. “Did you say Wendell?”
She nodded, “Apparently he needs our help with something. Must have thought the magic bird would be less likely to get lost.” Virginia leaned forward and opened the window a bit wider, and offered her hand to the sparrow. It hopped onto her out stretched hand and tilted it’s head at the both of them. “This place is very strange. So noisy and bright. And it’s night time.” Virginia sighed a little, feeling a bit impatient. “You said that Wendell needed help. Help with what? Has something happened? Is my dad okay?” She couldn’t quite keep the worry out of her voice as she rapidly fired the questions. The bird hopped around a bit in Virginia’s hand to tilt it’s head at her. ”Antony Lewis? He is well. But there is unrest in the 2nd Kingdom.”
“Huff puff,” Wolf muttered with a roll of his eyes. “Figures the prince can’t do anything on his own.” It was still strange to call the man they’d all gotten to know as a dog as anything other than Prince. Description of the originally planned 10th Kingdom sequel
Simon Moore discussed the plot of the sequel in the September 2006 issue of the 10th Kingdom Official Fan Newsletter (not affiliated in any way with this site). Here is what he had to say:
“The second adventure will be called ‘House of Wolves,’ and take us primarily into the wooded world of Red Riding Hood’s Kingdom, where schoolgirls in long, crimson caped uniforms are trained to deliver secret messages throughout the kingdoms, risking their lives to travel through the dark, dangerous forests.
The story begins in New York, some time after our previous adventure finished. Wolf and Virginia have opened their restaurant, which serves only meat of course, and only rare meat at that! Virginia is very pregnant with Wolf’s baby, and is getting concerned because she has been pregnant for much, much longer than is usual… Wolf says this is a sure sign that the baby will be a magic baby.
When Virginia does finally give birth, it is to a furry baby wolf cub!!! Wolf is thrilled, but Virginia is most certainly not, and doesn’t like the strange looks she gets when she wheels a little wolf cub around Manhattan in a pram. She is very upset and says she wants a human baby. Wolf promises to return to the Kingdoms with her and see if there is some magic spell that will turn their baby into human form. Indeed, perhaps someone has bewitched their baby… but who would do a thing like that?!
They travel to Red Riding Hood’s Kingdom, where wolves are demonized and forced to live in hidden underground villages deep in the forest. Wolf is shocked to see that girls at the Riding Hood Academy For Young Ladies are taught the most appalling, prejudiced ideas about wolves, and he decides to enroll as a teacher (without telling anyone that he is a Wolf, of course) to put the record straight. As you can imagine, a Wolf at a girls boarding school causes quite a few problems…
So many other things happen in our story, including Wolf discovering that his parents were not burned to death as he believed, but still alive! The story also features the magical, woodland full moon marriage of Wolf and Virginia! Old friends will return… some as small as an Acorn… And there will be many surprises - such as the fact that the new Troll National Anthem sounds very much like a Bee Gees song… Oh and one thing I can certainly promise - there will be magic aplenty! Magic everywhere, in all it’s wondrous forms. And there will be romance and hope and danger and adventures to take your breath away! And -
But, alas, that’s all I have time for now.”

Violet Starling (Cinnyricinclus leucogaster) with feather detail. Iridescence in bird feathers is due to microstructures of the feather refracting light like a prism. Fossil evidence has shown that birds have had these structures in their feathers for at least 40 million years.
Nature, you are crazy
Holy crap! That is the most gorgeous/gaudy bird ever! I think Magneto would aprove.
