We know the story of the woman caught committing adultery, right? We know the infamous words, “The one of you who is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” I know a lot of Christians that use that line. Yet, like most scriptures, they fail to read the entire passage; in context; or even realize that Yeshua was referencing Torah. Yeshua says this after writing in the dust.
So I ask, what did Yeshua write in the dust that made them walk away?
Jeremiah 17:13 Hope of Isra’el, Adonai! All who abandon you will be ashamed, those who leave you will be inscribed in the dust, because they have abandoned Adonai, the source of living water.
Notice who walks away first in John 8:3
But Yeshua went to the Mount of Olives. 2 At daybreak, he appeared again in the Temple Court, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The Torah-teachers and the P’rushim brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery and made her stand in the center of the group. 4 Then they said to him, “Rabbi, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 Now in our Torah, Moshe commanded that such a woman be stoned to death. What do you say about it?” 6 They said this to trap him, so that they might have ground for bringing charges against him; but Yeshua bent down and began writing in the dust with his finger. 7 When they kept questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “The one of you who is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Then he bent down and wrote in the dust again. 9 On hearing this, they began to leave, one by one, the older ones first, until he was left alone, with the woman still there. 10 Standing up, Yeshua said to her, “Where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, sir.” Yeshua said, “Neither do I condemn you. Now go, and don’t sin any more.”
Why would the olders one leave first? You see, Yeshua was the Word and obviously knew the Word (Torah). Those older men amongst them knew this was a trap for Yeshua and they knew the Torah. (Remember, these were disciplined men who read Torah every Shabbat and most likely, every day.) Because, had the Torah-teachers & P'rushim done things according to Torah, they would have brought BOTH the woman and man who was caught in adultery.
Deut. 22:22 “If a man is found sleeping with a woman who has a husband, both of them must die — the man who went to bed with the woman and the woman too. In this way you will expel such wickedness from Isra’el.
And, who was to cast the first stones? The (minimum of 2) witnesses!
They did this to trap Yeshua, as most Christians tend to over look. Now can you see why they walked away; older men first. They witnessed Jeremiah 17:13 being played out before their eyes. Yeshua was inscribing their names in the dust! They had abandoned Torah, essentially disobeying Torah, by bringing only the woman.
