I was at Disneyland yesterday and when I walked into the Princess Fantasy Faire I welled up with tears as I witnessed a magical moment with the newest princess Elena of Avalor speaking in full Spanish to a small princess visiting from Latin America.
Representation matters.
Oooh sheās so pretty š
Me: crying at this beautiful magical momentā¦
Also me: I donāt understand what is being said except zapatos. They are talking about shoes and Iām crying again.
I guess I shouldāve translated for the non-Spanish speakers. Elena: āYour shoes are so sparkly! You know my grandmother always says a princess needs something sparkly so everyone knows that you are a princess and look; you have your crown, your dress and your shoes. Everything is so beautiful!ā
Remember me, though I have to say goodbye. Remember me, donāt let it make you cry. For even if Iām far away, I hold you in my heart. I sing a secret song to you, each night we are apart. Remember me, though I have to travel far. Remember me, each time you hear a sad guitar. Know that Iām with you, the only way that I can be. Until youāre in my arms again, remember meā¦

Hi there! I was wondering if you knew I'd there is a purpose to the mirrors that appear to be on some sort of moving arm that you can see when you first get in the jeep on Indiana Jones and go into the chamber with three doors? I how never figured out if they are decorations or if the ride operators use them for a purpose. Thanks!
Those mirrors are part of the overall story line of the Temple of the Forbidden Eye.
I used to have one of the media guides that were given to media and to cast members when the attraction opened. I sadly no longer have it, but while I may get the occasional detail wrong, I can tell the story behind the attraction for those who never saw the full version.
If youād rather skip ahead to the tl;dr explanation, Iāll put the story behind a Red More and put a simple version in the tags.

Maui is not obese
Maui is a powerful demigod. Big and strong and⦠oh, you think he looks fat?
Thatās probably because youāve been conditioned by the media to accept this
as what strong and fit looks like. Amiright?
Sadly⦠these guys are not all that strong. Yeah, they got muscles⦠but they arenāt built in a useful way. They are built for looks and thatās about it.
Thisā¦Ā
is a strong guy. Actually a competitor in the Strongman competition. But⦠his tummy sticks out and he doesnāt look like a Dorito.Ā
You know who else is strong?
These guysā¦
And Mauiā¦
Look at those arms, omg. And that solid, sturdy torso. You can see a shadow where his meat covers his ribs, but he doesnāt look like any slouch to me.
And this guyā¦
Thatās Dwayne Johnsonās grandfather. When the Disney animators showed him their sketches of Maui, he pulled out a picture of his grandfather and showed it to them because he was amazed how similar they looked. This dude was also a pro wrestler.
Thereās actually a great infographic about ab muscles and stuff over HERE. but this is the part i want to show you.
Now⦠look at Maui again.
That thickness donāt move like fat. It doesnāt jiggle and heās able to flex it. Look at how it sits on his body. It doesnāt sag⦠he doesnāt have a gut. Thereās even a slight V shape to his torso.
Itās just big and not ādefinedā.
And people arenāt used to that.
(sorry, this isnāt the most organized post⦠i kinda just let it all spill out)
Chinese actress Liu Yifei is set to portray āMulanāĀ in the Disney live-action adaptation.

When the first teaser for Coco came out, a lot of people, including myself, were quick to accuse it of being a watered-down TBoL ripoff. And when criticisms from Latinx communities of it trying to trademark the phrase āDĆa de los Muertosā arise, as well as rumors popping up of Disney turning down Jorge GutiĆ©rrezās pitch for TBoL, we all used it as more reasons to justify our initial skepticism towards the movie.
But then the rumors were debunked. Jorge GutiƩrrez already explained that he never pitched TBoL to Disney, and that he supports Coco and its crew. Also, Pixar listened to the criticisms and took it to heart and made changes, and even hired some of the critics as consultants for the movie.
And while the initial teaser was pretty underwhelming, itās also, yāknow, a teaser. It doesnāt necessarily reflect the final product. We shouldnāt make conclusions based on two minutes of footage. Hell, there have been new trailers and promotional footage that serves as better representations of the final product.
As someone who has watched it, I can safely say that it is the most beautiful Pixar movie in recent years.
The one understandable reason to not watch this movie is the John Lasseter allegations. I get that. If I hadnāt already reserved the ticket days in advance, I would also be hesitant about supporting it.
If youāve decided to never watch a Pixar or Disney animated movie until Lasseter is completely out of the company, Iām not gonna tell you to watch this movie. But if youāre willing to make oneĀ exception, at least make it Coco. Itās definitely more culturally significant than Incredibles 2 or the Wreck-it-Ralph sequel.
^^^^ An addition.
And if you DONāT see it just because of Lasseter, just remember that Disney isnāt going to say āoh no look at all these people not coming to our movie because of himā and fire him or w/e, theyāre going to say āWell, I guess Latino movies donāt sellā and theyāre not gonna make another one for a long fuckin time.
Like, if you werenāt gonna see it anyway, fine, but if Lasseter is the only reason youāre considering not going, maybe reconsider.

You know, one thing i like about Mulan is how Yao, Ling and Chien Po donāt really seem to care about the fact that Mulan is a girl.
I mean, when they find out, they are visibly perplexed
But even so, they rush and try to help her when sheās about to get killed
After this, they all seem quite depressed about having to leave her behind (and when Shang ignores her)
And when she shows up and takes action, they gladly follow her lead
And they even rock some crossdressing, like she did
(btw they just missed a great opportunity to make Shang crossdress here, shame on you movie)
Honestly, i just think this needs more appreciation. Because to them, Mulan didnāt have to prove herself again,Ā just because she is a girl. She already earned their friendship and respect when she was āPingā, and that was enough.
