Whitechapel Gallery and Calvert 22
The Gallery is a touchstone for contemporary art internationally, plays a central role in London’s cultural landscape and is pivotal to the continued growth of the world’s most vibrant contemporary art quarter.
Last week we had an opportunity to go to Whitechapel gallery. It was interesting and this gallery differ from other galleries i have been. Some of the displayed pieces seemed weird to me ,but same time they were showing blunt truth.
Donation box is one of my favourite pieces. It look so casual unless you will come up closer to see what is inside. This box consists some coins, notes , broken oyster cards, but what about sea star ? random shoe? or coverage of peanut ? That is quite interesting to look at it in details and i would like to see that in different places as content changes depending on the city.
The bottle and the book is something new to me. It was the first time i saw cosy environment with table, chair and a lamp as a part of exhibition. The bottle of whiskey on a table is a main. Each visitor can have a sip if preferred, and many people do not hesitate to have one as gallery worker said 40 bottles of whiskey were bought for this exhibition.
The Whitechapel pool just looked like a usual pool that was staying alone for a couple of decades, but the truth behind this piece is that pool was a public bath for poor people who did not have bath facilities in 20th century. As it says “The Whitechapel pool is a poetic statement about civic space, communal health, pleasure and transgression”
Calvert 22 Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation committed to dialogue and discovery, to the development of international creative networks, and to the role of learning and education as the basis for knowledge sharing and institutional exchange.
At the moment Calvert 22 are presenting photo collections from different countries , mainly from Russia , Poland ,Ukraine, Hungary and Slovakia. This exhibition was especially close to me, as i am always excited to hear and see anything related to Russian speaking countries. I am from Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan) and all the works seemed extremely interesting to me as i would be able to make my own input if i would be in home country.
My favourite collection was done by Elena Subach and Viacheslav Poliakov - City of Gardens. In my opinion, this work stands out among others as it looks so bright and those are not just photographs, but some kind of collage. This work is focused on the Polish city of Katowice and it reflects a search for a unique Polish aesthetic that lies on the border between east and west.
