F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Beautiful and Damned
I love to be romanced. To be treated like a Princess. Made a priority , & thought of constantly, “I saw this and thought of you so I got it for you”, “I remembered that you like this place so I made us reservations” I love thoughtfulness. I love being affirmed, and showered in affection every now and again. I love kind gestures no matter how big or small. I love well planned date nights and I love nights spent in too. I love the idea of having a home in someone and I love the idea of love.
Simply cannot stop thinking about the fact that HJ and LaVonte are Sire and Childe and yet seem to have no hierarchy between them at all. HJ unquestionably treats LaVonte as his equal and LaVonte feels perfectly comfortable yelling at and physically assaulting HJ, both of which are kind of unthinkable under the social rules of the Camarilla. It’s LaVonte’s name first in Worthy and Wingstreet Industries. They are Sire and Childe but more importantly they are partners.
I feel like grace was in such a rush to turn that ship around and hightail it back to rocky that he was indiscriminate about what data he sent back. just shoved it all into the beetle probes, just to realize ‘ok so 20% of that data is scientific breakthroughs to save the world……..80% me and rocky’s movie reviews. and I def forgot to delete the fifteen minute long dance off. hm.’

Talking again about the movie Obsession: The main character of the movie is a guy, and yet everyone is talking about Nikki! Nikki is the star of the movie!! You check in letterboxd and all the reviews that mention any acting is Nikki! The most impacful character is her! In the top reviews of letterboxd, the only one that mentioned the guy was to say "the two leads were excellent, specially Nikki's". Inde Navarrette gets to shine with all the range of her acting from a natural performance, for the subtle details, and for going all out!! Even the people who misunderstand the movie are impacted by Nikki!! Oh how glorious to see her being the center of attention she deserves!! How refreshing is to see the most popular character be a woman and all the discussions about her on a story where she was not the main character, but was indeed the most important character of them all.
nikki begging bear to kill her and all he does is ask whats so bad about being with him. one of the most nauseating scenes ive ever witnessed
One of my favorite scenes in Obsession (2026) is when Fake-Nikki talks about how she’d feel if Bear didn’t sleep with her. Her blood would go cold. Her hands would lose sensation, like sand, like “when you lay on them wrong”. Slowly, her whole body would feel that way.
“And then there’s nothing. It’s not darkness. No, sweetie. Darkness is a color. There’s just nothing.”
Yes, Fake-Nikki is saying she’d kill herself if he left, but she’s also explaining why. The movie extends so much empathy to the being possessing Nikki. Without Bear, Fake-Nikki has nothing. When she first approaches his car, she’s on training wheels, learning how to act like a person, like Nikki. She’s spent every moment of her possession tailoring that ‘personhood’ to what she thinks Bear desires, what he DOES desire until it disturbs him. She exists only to please Bear. She is unable to move or feel in his absence. When he leaves for a day without her, she can’t leave her place by the door, can’t control her bodily functions.
All her effort is spent repressing the real Nikki, redirecting her pushback, or trying to correct behaviors that will never be enough because they’ll never be real. She’s stuck in between desperate, blood curdling pain/frustration and the need to express endless and undying love, the need to be used, because Bear made her that way.
And when she isn’t tuned to the right channel, isn’t able to fulfill her function? She becomes static. And that’s the worst thing she can imagine.
That moment where Nikki tells Bear that she's writing a love story that isn't a romance, and he doesn't get it. Can't recognize the difference between the two things, and the way it dooms them all. ugh. UGH. NOBODY TOUCH ME
i was thinking this and I've found somebody articulating it online
nikki breaks my heart so bad because in the brief moments we see her before the wish kicks in, she's so cool and funny, clearly kindhearted, very driven about her future (telling bear about how she was going to quit her job to focus on her writing), and also very sure of herself as a person. ive seen people describe this movie as "mean-spirited" and I think thats so apt because it was a 2 hour long tragedy of the torture of this innocent girl, taking away everything she's ever had, including her own sense of self, putting her through unimaginable horrors, and leaving her with nothing except the three dead bodies of her friends, with the one who she trusted most being the one who did this to her. nothing for her to look for hope in, because she has nothing before her except a lifetime in prison or in an institution. it would be one thing if the movie ended on a note like weapons, where everything was over and there would hopefully be recovery somewhere down the line, but here, not only was the evil not committed by a random stranger but her closest friend, but she doesn't get any chance at recovery either. so goddamn tragic. on that note, if anyone can come up with some sort of fix-it for nikki please link it to me because I will be crying about this girl forever.
One thing about Obsession (2026) that I enjoyed was that it almost asks you to feel empathy for the entity possessing Nikki as well as the real one. Like, obviously the things she's doing are horrific and fucked up, but I think the scene where Bear is asking her to "just be Nikki!" and she eventually just desperatly screams "I can't be Nikki!" does a really good job of showcasing the entity's inner feelings. She's been created with the sole purpose of loving this guy more than anyone else but no matter how perfect it is or how much he claims to love her, its not her that he loves, its Nikki. And any time she stops pretending to be Nikki, he reacts (albeit rightfully) with disgust and horror. She can't be Nikki because Nikki would never love Bear, and so Bear will never love her.
