Der Schluchsee is a lake in the Schwarzwald near Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Southwestern Germany. It lies almost 1000 m above sea level and is the highest reservoir in Germany as well as the largest lake in the Black Forest. There are numerous hiking trails in the area and watersports on the lake.
Freiburg, Baden-Württemberg. “Sitting plump at the foot of the Black Forest’s wooded slopes and vineyards, it’s a sunny, cheerful university town, its medieval Altstadt a story-book tableau of gabled town houses, cobblestone lanes and cafe-rimmed plazas. Party-loving students spice up the local nightlife. Blessed with 2000 hours of annual sunshine, this is Germany’s warmest city. While neighbouring hilltop villages are still shovelling snow, the trees in Freiburg are clouds of white blossom, and locals are already imbibing in canalside beer gardens. This eco-trailblazer has shrewdly tapped into that natural energy to generate nearly as much solar power as the whole of Britain, making it one of the country’s greenest cities.” - Lonely Planet Guide

The Byzantine village of Anávatos, Chios island, Greece. It is not known when Anávatos was founded but estimations point to the early 11th Century. Photo by Nicholas Mastoras.
Most of the settlement was destroyed during the Massacre of Chios in 1822. A 76 year old woman is the only resident of the village nowadays.
