"I like taking Willie for walks. I'm not used to a small town like this, and it's kind of... Cozy? We have our little route, at this point. Past the church, up the street, around the corner. PLOT DROP 01 — outside the church, after the service, with @keptjust

They'd decided to go to the vigil after all. Not a particularly religious person, though fairly neutral on churches, Aubrey felt a certain... something, towards the missing girl. Eliza was just a year younger than their little sister. That, if nothing else, made them want very badly for her to be found. In no way had they expected what they'd seen in that old little church, however.

They panicked, briefly, upon seeing it, certain that this was some new, horrific manifestation of seeing ghosts, that maybe their parents were right after all and they were— and then the panic broke out. It made them almost relieved, the knowledge that they weren't alone in seeing the gruesome whatever-it-was on the offering plate. The horrors, for once, weren't felt by them alone. Curious (that's what killed the cat, you know) they stepped forward to look at it, before paling. It was almost like Aubrey could smell it, taste it: it tugging at something in their subconscious in a way that made them feel ill. They'd seen it before.

Aubrey's breath caught in their throat, and they ran, instinctively, out into the parking lot, to the nearest tree, gasping and shivering. They collapsed more than they sat down, gasping for fresh air that didn't seem to come. They could still smell that ancient church carpet, the wood-rot that seemed to haunt so many buildings in Bone Gap, and they couldn't get their lungs clean of it. The world seemed to narrow only to a single image.
