CHAPTER THREE: THE LIST
“I’m coming, I’m coming!” I called, dusting my hands off on my jeans and scurrying to the door. I hurried to open it and grinned when I saw Amber standing before me.
“About time!” I laughed. “I’ve been doing this for an hour!”
“Oh, be quiet!” she said, hugging me quickly and walking in as I shut the heavy door behind her. She dropped her bag and strolled into my apartment, comfortable in it as though it were her own. She flopped down on the couch in front of the boxes I’d been organizing and peeked inside. “So what’s all this? Stuff you’re taking with you when you move or stuff you’re leaving behind?”
I sat down cross-legged on the floor in front of her. “Neither. It’s this old box I found in my closet. I had no idea it was even in there.” I shook my head and chuckled. “I guess it’s stuff I brought with me from my parents’ house. It’s from back when I was in high school.” I started riffling through the box, pulling out a few things.
Amber leant down and reached in, pulling out a large rectangular item. “What’s this?” She flipped it over and a huge grin spread across her warm face. “Oh my gosh, is this one of your high school yearbooks? What year is this?” She counted silently on her fingers, looking off to the side. “This is when you were sixteen!”
I lunged forward and snatched it out of her hands. “No! We are not looking at my yearbook pictures, no way! I’ve been trying to forget how fucking awful they were for the last ten years!”
She grinned mischievously and reached towards me, grabbing the corner of the thick book. “Please? I’m sure it’s not nearly as bad as you think!”
I shook my head vigorously at her. “You have no idea how bad every single one of my pictures was.” I tugged back on the book but she pulled at the same time and it slipped out of my grasp, the combined force of our tugging sending it flying over the back of the sofa. It landed with a loud thud on the hardwood floors and I scrambled over to grab it before Amber could steal it from me again.
“Hey, what’s this?” she asked, her voice full of curiosity.
“What are you talking about?” I shoved my yearbook into the bookshelf behind me and returned to the sofa, sitting next to her.
“This,” she replied, holding up an ancient looking scrap of paper. I gingerly took it from her hand, looking closely at the worn folds and yellowing edges. It looked so old and dusty that I feared by unfolding it, it might dissolve into thin air before me.
“Unfold it!” Amber exclaimed impatiently, trying to grab it from me.
I leaned away from her, ensuring the paper was out of her reach. “Hey, it’s my paper, and I’ll unfold it when I want to!” I carefully separated the edges from each other and unfolded it bit by bit. On the inside of the paper were fading lines of penciled cursive script and messy doodles all around the edges. At the very top on all caps was written “The List: to be completed before marriage or any other form of monotonous living.” My face lit up as I scanned the page. “Oh my god,” I said in a whisper, shaking my head as a smile spread across my lips.
“What? What is it?” Amber leaned over my shoulder and gazed at the long-forgotten page. “You wrote this?”
I chuckled. “Yep, when I was sixteen years old. God, I can’t believe it’s been ten years already. Feels like yesterday.” I leaned back and pulled my legs up onto the couch, reading over the first few items I’d written down: See Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower, Eat fish and chips in London, Get at least one tattoo, Sleep under the stars, Fall in love with a boy whose language you can’t even speak. It went on and on, filled with the lofty dreams I’d had as an awkward, restless teenager anxious to get away from my tedious life. I sighed happily, running my fingers lightly over the page. “I’ve actually done all of these things, Amber. Without even remembering I’d made this list, I did it all.”
She read over my shoulder, smiling here or there at a few of the things I’d written, maybe recalling a few that we’d done together. “Was this like your bucket list or something?”
I chuckled. “Well…not quite. It was all the things I wanted to do before I got married.”
Amber raised her eyebrow and looked at me with a look that said you are actually insane. “Before you got married? Why?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know. I never really liked the idea of marriage. It seemed like a trap that boring old people fell into when they weren't exciting enough to be on their own.”
“You are so weird,” Amber laughed, shaking her head. “It’s funny that you found it just as you’re about to move in with your fiancé, don’t you think?”
I chuckled to myself, flipping the list over in my hands to fold it back up. “Yeah, that is a bit ironic…” My voice trailed off as my eyes caught sight of a line of script across the top of the page. I bit my lip and furrowed my brow, reading the item labeled #26.
“Amber…”
“What?”
“There’s something I have to do.”
Everybody ignore sassandasscreatedlouis posting hate on our tag. The boys wouldn't want us to send hate back, and us getting annoyed only makes her happier.
Guys if you read a chapter, can you please like it just so I know anyone's paying attention? Thanks!
The List -- Chapter Two: Transitions
“Wait so all of you were in on this?” I exclaimed, looking around the room at their laughing faces. I turned to my friend Amber, glaring at her. “Even you? How did you not let it slip?” I cried, still in shock. I fingered the ring, looking down on it with awe. It was so strange to see the blinding diamond sparkling there on my finger that it completely took my breath away each time I looked.
Amber laughed. “It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my entire life, having to keep the proposal a secret from you! But yeah, we all knew Ryan was planning it.”
As if on cue, Ryan slipped his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close into his side. “You should have seen your face when I asked you! And then when everyone came running up the steps…priceless!” He leaned down, kissing me on the forehead, and I laughed, frowning up at him.
“You know I hate big, flashy surprises Ry,” I grumbled, scrunching up my nose.
“Oh please!” Ryan’s former frat brother Jake came over, rolling his eyes at me. “With stuff like this it’s go big or go home, right Ry?” He punched Ryan in the arm, who laughed and nodded in agreement.
“Definitely. Harper’s just being dramatic, as usual!” Ryan replied, rolling his eyes at me jokingly and squeezing my shoulder. I wasn’t being dramatic, I was being serious, but the late hour was getting to me and the excitement of the night fizzed in my mind like champagne bubbles, making me giddy. I giggled a little, shaking my head embarrassedly.
Ryan tightened his arm around me. “Alright you guys, get out so I can celebrate my engagement with my fiancé in peace!” He shooed everyone out the door as they grumbled and whined with fake complaints. I chuckled to myself as they filed out drunkenly, one by one.
When the apartment was finally empty and the stereo echoed through the hollow rooms, Ryan placed his hands lightly on my neck and looked down at me with a small smile.
“Don’t give me that look!” I laughed. “I’m still really mad at you! I can’t believe you proposed in front of everyone we know! How embarrassing!”
Ryan rolled his eyes, running his thumb lightly over the veins in my neck, sending a shiver down my spine. “There’s nothing embarrassing about telling your friends that you’re about to marry your boyfriend of three years. Quit the act Harper, I know you won’t be able to play mad at me for long.” Ryan smirked and brought his face close to mine, rubbing circles over my pulse spot.
“It’s not an act Ry, I’m seri” – I was cut off as he brought his warm lips to mine, catching me in an unexpected kiss. He brought his palms to rest on my cheeks, pulling me towards him and kissing me slowly. I pushed my annoyances away and wrapped my arms around his waist, letting myself get lost in the kiss.
He kissed me. He kissed me until he knew I couldn’t be angry or annoyed, until I forgot why I was annoyed in the first place. He was always clever like that, knew how to manipulate me and push all the right buttons. Somehow, he always found a way to get away with anything.
He pulled back finally and looked straight into my eyes, still cupping my face in his hands. “One last thing to ask,” he said. I nodded expectantly.
“Will you finally move in with me Harper? Get rid of that bachelorette pad of yours and stay with me for good?”
I bit my lip. “Hmm I don’t know. I’m pretty attached to that leaky faucet of mine…I don’t think I’d be able to part with it.” I shrugged.
All Ryan had to do was kiss me and know the real answer would be yes.
But a tiny part of me wanted it to be no.

The List -- Chapter One: Eve
I felt a gentle tug on my left hand, nearly causing me to tip my sparkling glass of untouched champagne to the floor. “Come on,” said his excited whisper in my ear, his warm breath tickling my skin. He tugged again, pulling me away from the raucous noise and dim glow of the party.
I laughed and followed him, jogging to keep up with his long, determined strides. “Ryan, where are you taking me?” I yelled over the noisy laughter of the party-goers. “We’ll miss the ball dropping!” Ryan said nothing, just turned around and flashed me a smug, model-worthy grin, the very smile that caught my eye all those years ago.
“Trust me, you’ll love this Harper,” he called, continuing to drag me towards the gleaming glass doors that lead to the rooftop and the velvet-black night beyond. He pushed down on the golden handle and led me outside, a cold rush of December air rushing around us. I shivered a little at the sudden chill and Ryan gave my hand a tender but hurried squeeze. “Now close your eyes,” he said, his voice suddenly loud now that we had left the noisy party. I obeyed, shutting my eyes and placing my other hand on his hip so as not lose my footing in my newly blind state. We climbed the stairs a little too quickly, my foot catching on the hard concrete. I yelped, falling forward, but Ryan pulled me up again and carried on.
“Jesus, Ryan, why the rush?” I grumbled, pulling at the hem of my navy blue sequined party dress, which was riding up from our scramble.
“No swearing,” he scolded me in his usual, chiding way. “And don’t worry, you’ll see.” With a final pull we reached the top step, the sudden void created by the open air both startling and exhilarating.
Ryan stepped in front of me, still holding onto my hand. “Now open your eyes,” he said softly.
I lifted my eyelids slowly and looked around in dazzled awe, sure my face must have worn the innocent wonder of a small child. Someone had transformed the roof of our building into a wonderland of tiny white lights. Little glowing orbs shimmered on nearly every surface: hanging from the guard rail, strung around the door frames, even entire rows of lights laid out on the rooftop we stood on. The only bare part of the roof was the path from the door to where we stood. Ryan and I held onto each other, floating on our little island amid the sea of lights.
I turned back to him as I heard the muffled shouts of “Ten! Nine!...” resonating from our hallway. “Ryan, did you do all this…” My voice trailed off as I caught sight of him. He held my hand while crouched on one knee, his eternally handsome face upturned to gaze into my eyes. His other hand clutched a small, light blue box that I recognized immediately. Inside it was the largest diamond ring I had ever seen in person. It glittered cold silver in the moonlight.
“Six! Five!...”
“Oh my God,” I whispered.
Ryan didn’t even scold me for “taking the lord’s name in vain.”
“Harper Rockwell, the most beautiful girl in Manhattan, will you be my wife?”
My fingers shook, perhaps from the cold, perhaps not. “I….” I couldn’t speak. My surprised heart seemed to have stopped beating, frozen like the sparkling icicles that clung to the rooftop’s edge.
“Three! Two!...”
“One!” Without warning our guests, burst through the glass doors and rushed up the stairs in a crashing wave of loud voices and laughter.
“Yes!” I shouted as they crowded around us. “Yes, Ryan! Absolutely, yes, yes!” Now it was my turn to pull him up, throwing my shaking arms around him and holding him to me tightly. I could hear cries of “Happy New Year!” resounding all around me but they seemed foggy and far away, my mind filled with nervous energy and the smell of Ryan’s trademark Ralph Lauren cologne. He pulled back a little, slipping the ring on my finger. It felt cool and foreign on my bare hand.
“Happy New Year Harper,” he yelled over the whoops and cheers. I grinned up at him nervously, still in shock and completely unsure of what to do.
But Ryan didn’t make me think of my next move. He cradled my neck in his soft hands and pulled me towards him, kissing me hard as light and laughter showered down around us.
