Department of Ecological Anthropology, Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS)
The Institute of Critical Zoologists is the first interdisciplinary scholarly centre dedicated to promoting critical dialogue on the principals and practices of animal spectatorship and animal-related policies. The ICZ was founded in 1996. The institute formed as a result of a merger between the Japanese Institute 'Nagasaki Animal Center' and the Chinese 'Zhong Yao Dong Wu Xue Guan'. Together, The late Mr Takanashi Oishi from Japan and Mr. Dong Wu Ren from China saw a need for a new strand of zoological study in the east. The Institute has offices in China, Japan, Singapore and London.

2019/10/16 Workshop
【Tools and Methods】 ・What are the potential source of wisdom? ・How much time do we spend on these things? ・How to engage with these sources?
1. Western Thoughts (writings/ objects)
・Reading: How do we read books? ・Art of the trade: understand > absorb > internalise > emulate browse/ read/ digest/ copy ・ANCHOR ・Writings represent the authors, not performance ・Consider regional specificity of problems/ audience ・Tips: reading reviews, dissertation, check top journal’s article titles
2. Indigenous Wisdom (writings/ oral | practice/ object)
3. East Asian Thoughts (writings/objects/practice)
・How to make it alive? ・Traditional > ( what can bridge these two?) > contemporary theoretical language (e.g. Robin Wall Kimmerer)
4. Art Practices (practice)
・How do you learn from artworks? ・How do you work with artists? ・Long-term relationship with one artist ・Relationship with multiple artists can be developed into a community movement ・Be selective. ‘Anchoring’ to a good project ・Truely like the work and admire the artist. Genuine interest and curiosity: look many times > trust your own judgement
5. Science (writings/practice)
・News, Media (Guardians Environment) ・Podcast (Science/ Nature) ・Talk to an expert (ecologist/ scientist) ・Take a course and get proper training (MOOC) ・Read reviews and recommended books& journals
6. Other Species (practice)
・Spend time with them ・Pay attention to other species ・Develop a habit to be outside, be with other species ・Ideas for future: science residency, nature retreat
7. Activism (practice)
===========================================
【Career】
1. Generations
・Mentors: old famous people ・Peers: outstanding people of your generation (academics/ artists) ・Students
> Group with your generation > Always position yourself in the field
2. Vision
・Be conscious of being ahead. Don’t miss the bigger picture ・Never be able to compete with a specialist in single field > Interdisciplinarity: we connect the dots, work on the cutting-edge
===========================================
【Blog Protocol】
・Main page is mainly for external people: show our activities and achievements (e.g. conference paper, presentation, etc.) ・Artwork: #artwork - Work info for the title/ Image/ Link ・Exhibition: #exhibition - Exhibition info for the title/ Info/ Link ・Bibliograpgy: #bibliography - Chicago Style info for the title/ description (optional)/ tags ・Other tags: #conference #grant #journal - share information with group members
===========================================
【To Do】
1. Academic
・Invite experts/ scholars (Taiwan/ Yuk Hui?) to help us for integrating ecological theories and East Asian thoughts ・Seek for ecologist advisors
2. Tumblr
・Find a way to search multiple tags (Michael) ・Find a way to rate a book collectively (using comments?) ・Write an introductory text for the group
