Hi! I’m rereading Cagebird and am at the part where Yuri is asking Falcone if he had previous protégés. Falcone tells Yuri that three came before him. We know Cairo and Jos, but who is the third?

Hello and thank you for the question! Good catch. ;)

Yes, there was a third and we never met him in the books. When I was writing CAGEBIRD I realized that there was no way Falcone would've waited as long as he had between Cairo and Jos to try his BS again. As Estienne said (and assuming he wasn't lying), that one unalived himself rather than live as a protégé. I haven't done a deep dive into who he was... maybe there's a novella in there for him, though obviously it wouldn't end on a positive note. :(

You've got me thinking though... because I suspect he actually didn't unalive himself...

I commissioned this gorgeous portrait from a wonderful artist named Dianso, to be included in the inside pages of Under the Silence (Evan's Story), which I am still writing, but enjoying immensely. The ebook will be reissued with his story as a Part 2, and all those who can show picture proof of owning the original book will get the ebook for free!

I'd said when UTS dropped that to bear in mind we didn't see Evan's side. So now you will. 😄

Hey everyone, I know it's going to be a busy day for a lot of people, but Google enrolled everyone over 18 into their AI program automatically.

If you have a google account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off.

Then you need to go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and turn off all Gemini activity tracking. You do have to do them in that order to make sure it works.

Honestly, I'm not sure how long this will last, but this should keep Gemini off your projects for a bit.

I saw this over on bluesky and figured it would be good to spread on here. It only takes a few minutes to do.

Writers: It's asking to read your Google Docs and be able to 'summarize' things from them and such things. I just turned all mine off.

Because this isn't mentioned above, also go to google.com/drive/settings and turn off all the annoying bits that interface directly with docs there.

This is all in the "privacy" tab of your settings. How fun that everything is hidden two layers deep. 🙄 This DOESN'T get rid of the stupid little star constantly asking you to use it, unfortunately, but that's what the picker in ublock is for. 😉

More detail instructions for OP's post for those who are confused. This is done from the browser on my laptop, I don't know what they look like on phones.

When you click the first link gemini.google.com/extensions, you need to click on the setting icon at the bottom, then choose "Extension", like this:

Scroll down a bit, you will see the options, turn them all off.

Then, you click on the second link myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, you'll see it tells you that it's already "turn off". NO! IT'S NOT! You have to click on that "Turn off" option, it'll drop down a menu like this:

Turn that thing off. Until that button shows you have to click to turn it back on like this:

And then, click on the delete button down there too, even if it says there's nothing to delete, just do it as a caution.

After you's done with those two. You go to your Drive, find the Setting button.

Click on the "Privacy" tab, choose the button "Manage Workspace smart feature setting"

Tick both of those off, then click Save. Or if you still want to use Google AI assistant for some reasons, please read the fine lines very very carefully.

Only then, you can feel safe enough with this force AI assistant bullshit. FOR NOW 🤡 All these steps still can't get rid of that Gemini blinkblink icon though >:(((((

Repeat for every one of your google accounts 💀

MATRYOSHKA update: 100 pages of solid/won’t change prose. I've figured out the plotty things TODAY that will tee off The Warboy (the logistics of what is essentially a gangland spy novel did not come easily). It’s pretty much a complete rewrite at this point going forward from my first draft back in 2021. I feel good about it. 🔪 The blurb:

Jascha Terisov and his broken family are refugees. At three years old, his mining colony was attacked by alien enemies and the destruction thrust his parents, older brother Yuri, and younger sister into separate relief camps on different planets. Though his sister was eventually reunited with him and his mother, Yuri was lost—signed onto a merchant ship as a child.

Now eighteen years later, Jascha works long hours to provide for his sister’s medical care. Life as refugees on Mars is not the promise of stability they were told. When Jascha is approached by covert agents posing as officers from the Department of Justice, they offer him a deal he can’t refuse: go back to deep space to locate his brother Yuri—the monetary compensation will set his family up for life and afford his sister the care she needs. The catch? Yuri is a pirate on the run and this mission threatens to place Jascha in his own brother’s crosshairs.

Was looking through the scraps I’d written for possible Omake II stories (for my Warchild Mosaic universe) and came upon this bit. I’d thought I might write a story from Madi’s POV but that likely won’t happen since I have other things I want to write ahead of that (like The Warboy). So anyway, I know a few readers over the years had asked me about Madi (like for the first Omake collection), so here’s a glimpse.

It's been on my mind because I'm writing a "sequel" to Under the Silence from Evan's POV. :) (Which was always my intention.) Here's an excerpt:

People liked to tell him he was lucky to have a place here, on the goodship Macedon. Maybe people needed to be grateful he wasn’t actually a pirate. Not that he ever said that aloud. That’d be a one way ticket to the brig, where he’d rot until he died. A few of these fuckers would’ve loved that, and if nothing else spite kept him in line. He wouldn’t give anyone the satisfaction of disappearing.
