Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually don’t think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you can’t point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.

there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.

short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.

meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.

Remember that if you want to do more of something, you have to do less of something else. It's that time of year where people set goals for the new year and they have plans and hopes and it's always focusing on what they want to do more of. More studying, more exercise, more crafting, more socialising, more making things from scratch. Okay, great. What are you going to do less of in order to have the time and energy to do more of those things you really want to do?

And if your answer to this is "less doomscrolling" or "less bedrotting" then great, but please think about why you're doing those things. No one's doomscrolling or bedrotting because they don't have things they'd rather be doing. Actually, I'm willing to bet you have a lot of things you'd rather be doing and you spend your life internally screaming at yourself to do literally any one of the many things you want to be doing instead, but you don't have the energy for them all and you can't work out how to prioritize them, so doomscrolling spares you from making that decision. Or perhaps you're burned out from taking on too many projects and you need to rest your brain, so you lie in bed because you don't even have the energy to get started anymore.

This is going to be a really hard pill to swallow, but the truth is you might not be able to balance all your hobbies and all your projects the way you'd like. If you want to finish writing that book, you might have to reduce your daily drawing habit to a couple of times a week. If you want to do yoga every morning, you might have to accept not cooking from scratch as often. If you want to spend more time with your family, you might have to cut down on your yearly reading goal. I'm not saying give up on your hobbies; I'm be realistic with your time and your energy and be kind to yourself. Stop expecting yourself to do more and do better every single year. You don't have to constantly be growing upwards and reaching for the stars; you can be content with where you are, or even cut parts of yourself back to make space for other things in your life to bloom.

Think about what your priorities are and make peace with doing less of other things. Less is okay. Less is not failing. Less is self care.

Been in a mood so I thought I would take a break from my depressing ass wips to write something a little more fluffy. I might add more to this, I might not, but enjoy!

Yor Brings Home a Cake (short scene)

It was 11pm when Yor staggered through the front door and stood just inside the entryway, swaying. Her blouse was torn. She had dark circles under her eyes and her arms were wrapped in blood-stained bandages.

Loid dropped the newspaper and rose to his feet, hurrying to steady her. “Yor! What happened?” he asked.

“Loid…” she murmured with an exhausted smile. “Look.” She lifted her hands to show him what she was holding. 

He blinked. He hadn’t noticed that she was carrying anything. An oversight. He was getting too comfortable letting his guard down inside the apartment. He would have to stay far more wary in the future.

“What’s this?” he asked, taking her burden from her and holding it up so he could get a better look at it. It was a glass cake dish. Inside was a somewhat lopsided, inexpertly iced cake.

“I baked it,” Yor croaked. “Camilla… helped… me…” 

Her eyes fluttered shut. In a trice, Twilight slid the cake dish onto a nearby cabinet and got his arm around her before she toppled. Her cheek fell against his shoulder and she began to snore.

“Yor?” he said, jiggling her to see if she would wake up. “Yor?”

She was out like a light. With a sigh, Twilight scooped her up and carried her towards her room. He wrangled her bedroom door open and brought her inside. He laid her down on top of the bed and took off her boots, her headband, and her earrings. She didn’t stir at all.

A cake, huh? What flavor of cake was so brutal that it had almost bested a woman as strong and indefatigable as his wife?

He shimmied the covers out from beneath her body, then tucked them up around her shoulders. Cold dread raised goosebumps on his arm. He leaned over to fluff her pillow around her cheeks. Was this the sleep of a woman who had fought hard and won, or would the cake claim more victims the next day, when he and Anya were called upon to taste it?
