There was actually a small bit of luck with a rift appearing so close to Skyhold. The scouts had reported it, and Dagna had been practically foaming at the mouth to study it first hand. 

After some deliberation, the Inquisitor had agreed to let her go. So long as she had an escort. And since Dagna was one of the Inquisition’s most valuable resources, Aedan ha volunteered to accompany her guard detail.

Turns out it was a good idea, given the number of demons that had started pouring out of the rift. 

As he dispatched the last revenant, he ordered the soldiers to bring Dagna out of cover. Assuming she hadn’t gone running into the fight to study one of the demons in action.
