War on OB-GYN

I'm not a doctor. I'm not a woman. I'm just some white guy who is dismayed how laws are on the books or being proposed to restrict a woman's reproductive rights. So in keeping in our bizarre tradition of starting wars on concepts: poverty, drugs, terror, etc, I'm naming this the "War on OB-GYN." I'm very afraid much like those other "wars," this will be one without end.

Lawmakers hide behind an odious version of God

PZ Myers in paraphrasing an ID lawmaker, exposes the paradox of using the common perception of the Christian god as rationale for restricting abortion:

God is so powerful, he also has the ability to take simple, manageable situations and turn them into tragic, horrific, oppressive circumstances in which the devil's whores, i.e. all women, can suffer and feel guilt.

MO Law Swaps a Non-Problem of Late-Term Abortion with a Real One

They are pretending there is a problem so they feel justified intimidating doctors and patients.

The Non-Problem

According to the article, in 2009 less than one tenth of one percent (0.01%) of all abortions in Missouri are after the 21st week. Although typical fetuses at this stage are viable, none of these abortions were.

So, although a small sample size, late-term abortions appear to be rare and being done for justifiable reasons.

The Intimidation

The new law removes the rationale of the mother's health for late-term abortion of a viable fetus. It allows only for a few, very specific exceptions.

This means that the reason for a late-term abortion is not a private matter, between a doctor and a their patient, but subject to legal scrutiny. This means during consultation, the doctor will have to not only judge the medical merits of their case, but also its potential legal liability it engenders.

It's cheap intimidation. Something our legislators seem to be good at.

I don't have the statistics, but I do wonder how many late-term abortions happen (I assert very few) and their reasons (I assert most are very specific and are health related). I question the need of need of a blanket law which limits a woman's right to control her and her unborn child's welfare.

AL seems to have a good chance at changing the definition of "person" to include a human egg after the moment of conception.

I've yet to figure out if many spontaneous abortions will lead to manslaughter investigations, but I wonder what unintended consequences this would cause.
