Not for the Books || Warren & Emmaline
Emmaline hummed to herself as she grabbed a box of new children’s books from the back, carrying them out to the little reading section in the front of the store. About a dozen or so Dr. Seuss book lay inside, all with new shiny covers and crisp, not yet touched pages, the spines still in great condition. This wasn’t the way these books were supposed to be though. Emma much preferred them looking well-read, maybe a tear in the pages here and there. She imagined parents reading these stories to their children at night or the young themselves picking one up and trying to read on their own. She smiled at that thought, she wanted little dark-haired babies of her own one day, ones that she could read these same books too. Maybe she would be able to do that for Julian’s son. Yeah, he was going to be her fiancee’s Godson, but why couldn’t get in a little awesome auntie Emma time too?
I wonder if my father would have read me books like this. The thought startled Emmaline, even though it had come from her own head. She had been thinking about her father a lot likely and she didn’t even know why. It wasn’t like she knew the guy, maybe she didn’t even want to, maybe he was some completely evil male who did horrible things and she was lucky to have been left with only her mother. But maybe he wasn’t a bad person. No one had ever met her father, her mother had remained pretty tight lipped about who he had been, not even her adoptive mother Ava knew who he was, not even his name. Maybe her mother had just had some random romp in the night and her father didn’t even know that Emmaline existed. But either way, Emma had still grown up without a father and always found herself a little lacking because of it. She didn’t know half of herself. She had grown up with the Valkyrie, and even though she had had a more than wonderful life, she had been the one to really teach herself about the other side of herself. Even her mother, before the world had so cruelly taken her from Emmaline, hadn’t know what to do with Emma’s cat side. No one had. She had been alone in that arena of her life.
A voice in her shop knocked her from her thoughts and Emma spun her head around quickly, from her crouched down position on the carpeted floor. “Oh, hi!” She said with a smile, looking around her boxes. “Down here!”
The books were comforting. There was certainly something cozy about a book shop. He had never really been into reading much. It had been a very long time since he had read a good book. But he had liked them once, but just like a lot of his past he had left that behind. Perhaps he just needed a good book. Only when he heard the releaving voice of her was he snapped out of the trance.
He made his way around one of the book shelves and saw her crouched down in front of a bunch of childrens books. The sight made him smile. "Hi, it's a nice store you got here," he said nodding and looking around. "Children's books? Didn't know that was your genre." He chuckled slightly feeling more at ease than he was at before. That didn't stop his heart from racing though. This was his daughter, and she still had no idea who he was.
"Mind if I join you?" he asked crouching down next to her giving her a warm smile that just felt natural. She really did look so much like her mother.
Not for the Books || Warren & Emmaline
This had to be the single most awkard, weird, obscure thing Warren had ever done and he had done some pretty weird things in his long lifetime. Nothing compared though to visiting his daughter who had no idea that he was her father. Now it turns out she's going to get married to someone else he had never met. It was enough to make anyone's head spin. And here was Warren trying to build up their relationship which should have started since the day she was born. But where was he? Not Emerald Cove that's for sure.
With his hands slumped in his pockets as he walked down the sidewalk of the street that Emmaline's book store was on. He could feel his heart beating like a drum now as he saw the shop in the distance. Oh he couldn't wait to see her again. She was everything he had ever dreamed of, have hoped for.
Finally he was at the front door, perhaps too soon for his liking, but somehow his trembling hand managed to turn the knob of the door and he stepped in. It seemed like an average book store but he wasn't here for the books but he could pretend for Emmaline. Any chance he got to see her he would sieze it. He had 24 years of fathering to make up. He wasn't going to take this lightely.
"Hello?" he called in the shop. "Emmaline it's me- er Warren." It felt weird introducing himself as Warren, but it was necessary now. He drummed his fingers on the side of his leg, anxious as ever.
Okay, I'm finally out of bed.
Probably not.
Yeah, sure. Anytime you need something to read, I’m your girl. Plus, I did just get in a new shipment of books.
Sounds great! You'll probably see me around then.
Okay, I'm finally out of bed.
Um, yeah…it is intense. Very intense.
Oh, me? I own the little book store downtown.
Not a bad place to have friends though I suppose.
Nice. Maybe I'll stop by sometime.
Okay, I'm finally out of bed.
His name is James, he’s a…well, he’s a public prosecutor at the law offices downtown.
Sounds like he would be very protective. Public prosecutor? That's intense stuff.
What do you do for a living?
Okay, I'm finally out of bed.
Oh, I’m fine! No worries there.
I’ve got a bit of a protective fiancee. I’m pretty sure he’d punch someone for even sneezing on me.
Good good... And fiancee... right heard about that I think. You're getting married. That's great. Really.
Mind me asking who the lucky guy is?
Okay, I'm finally out of bed.
Something like that.
Let’s just say I won’t be hosting another Cove party at my house for awhile.
I heard about that. Erm.. you okay?
Okay, I'm finally out of bed.
How goes everything Emerald Covers?
Long night?
Haha I remember when I used to get drunk like that
Why do I saw rawr? It’s not like we actually do that.
Elisa, it’s great to meet you!
You're right, it's far more terrifying than that.
Have you been around the Cove for a while?
Its been a while since I woke up next to someone
Better. A night in with someone I care about.
That is much better. You keep that going for you kid. I've had far too many bad experiences to know otherwise.
Haha I remember when I used to get drunk like that
Doesn’t really matter when you are having a baby - They say binge drinking is bad.
You smell good. I would know that scent anywhere, rawr!
It is. At least you're smart enough to realize that now.
A fellow panther? It's always a pleasure. I'm Warren.
Its been a while since I woke up next to someone
There’s nothing like it.
Oh I know. Wild party or something last night?
Haha I remember when I used to get drunk like that
I remember times like that, too.
You seem awfully young for a statement like that.
Haha I remember when I used to get drunk like that
Good times...
Its been a while since I woke up next to someone
I missed it.
You and me both.
