Why Did the Dakar Rally Move from Senegal?

Warren Wamberg is an entrepreneur, author, and philanthropist based in Miami, Florida. In 1997, Warren Wamberg became the first American to finish the grueling Dakar Rally. During the rally, Mr. Wamberg raised over $8 million for charities. From its inception in 1978 to 2007, the annual Dakar Rally took place between the cities of Paris in France and Dakar in Senegal. Over 10 to 15 days, rally drivers had to cover up to 15,000 km (9,300 miles) of challenging terrain that took them through France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, and finally Senegal. In 2008, the off-road car race organized by Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) was canceled because of terrorist threats in Mauritania. Later in the year, ASO, still concerned about the security threat in Mauritania, decided to move the Dakar Rally to South America. For slightly more than a decade, ASO held the race in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Lima, Peru. In 2020, the rally moved to the Middle East, with the first event taking place between Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.
