Ghosts of the conflicts of Indochina

Earlier this morning, the Phước Sơn District Military Command of the People’s Army of Vietnam recovered the remains of 17 commando troops after 15 days of excavation.

The commandos were part of the PAVN’s 404th Battalion and were involved in the attack against American/South Vietnamese forces at Khâm Đức airfield on August 5th,1970. Remains were unearthed from 3-5 meters deep in the ground.

The search for these remains started almost two decades ago in 2001 but it wasn’t until 2013 that American war correspondent Christopher Jensen shed some more light on the battle. He provided information that would prove very useful.

Independence Palace (Dinh Độc Lập), built on the site of the former Norodom Palace, is a landmark in Saigon, Vietnam. It was designed by architect Ngô Viết Thụ and was the home and workplace of the President of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It was the site of the end of the Vietnam War during the Fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975, when a North Vietnamese army tank crashed through its gates.

One of the most unique specimens in the #PFACollection! A 1964 A-2 Deck Jacket with lots of patches, DIY repairs, stenciled “SHOEMAKER” name and a hand-painted Playboy bunny. Patches are mostly souvenirs of the Vietnam tour and none have ship names, which makes provenance more challenging. One clue is the marvellous 8" Asahi Beer Far East patch. Another is the Playboy bunny, which was adopted by the VMAQ-2 squadron as a logo, and was active during 1966-67 in Da Nang. So it may be a stretch, but going through the many Seventh Fleet ships, I found a R. T. Shoemaker who did served on the USS Constellation during that time. A jacket full of character nonetheless.

This pen drawing of a Vietcong doctor who lived until 1970 was interesting. I did more research…one of the very few female battlefield doctors to be in the front lines of the Vietnam war. She was 27, killed by American forces in 1970 while walking a trail in Ba To. Her diaries were captured and saved for 35 years then made into a bestseller. Her story is so tragic. The communists that she believed in so much, would not allow her to marry her love. She was too valuable as a commodity.

Photojournalist Dickey Chapelle was wearing combat boots, a bush hat and her signature pearl earrings when she was hit by shrapnel from a Viet Cong land mine near Chu Lai Air Base on Nov. 4, 1965. She was the first female American war correspondent to be killed in action. “When I die, I want it to be on patrol with the United States Marines,” she’d once said. Her last words were, reportedly, “I guess it was bound to happen.”

Also known as LZ Rawhide, it was a long, narrow ridge of rock which stood 65 ft above sea level, located west of Danang and the ocean.  A mile or so to the north, a huge mountain dubbed "Charlie Ridge" by the Marines occupying the LZ, loomed over it.  The river Vu Gia lies just across the road on the south side of the site, and across from that would lie the vast stretch of valley known to the Marines as "Arizona Territory", an area under intense conflict by the local population against the Marines' presence in the Quang Nam.
