Carlito, the idea vs. Carlito, the man (A Faster Than Sex rant I worked on for 1 hour)

(Please note I'm not good at making points. I just like making words that almost mean something sound nice next to each other.)

I am really interested in Carilto as a character. We spend the entire album with him, but we only know so much about him. He fucks cars. Okay? What was his life like before Carl Benz sent him on this quest? The idea of Carlito as a person is so vague, I can't help but be mystified by it.

Throughout the album the Carlito we see is manic, compulsive and sex obsessed. But from what I've gathered, a lot of this comes from the social isolation Carl Benz forced him into. Not to say these aren't traits he had beforehand, but rather that they were heavily boosted by the situation. Carlito's divorce is so important to Carl Benz because it cuts Carlito free from any safety net. There is truly nothing left for him, but sex with cars.

Carl Benz does not care about Carlito the man, but instead Carlito the prophecy. Carlito is a tool through which he will obtain immortality. Benz has known this for 100 years. Carlito is the part that you ordered a weeks ago. Rip him out of the box and put him in the machine.

Carlito was put into a situation where his only choice was to go along with what Benz needed him to do. And why would he do anything else? He loves fucking cars.

A detail I find so fascinating is the number of cars Carlito calls his wife. This reads as a yearning for commitment. He wants a wife. Human or car, doesn't matter, he just needs consistency. This is the opposite of Carl Benz's plan. Carlito can't have love in his life. Love is something to come home to when the day is done. Carlito can't have something to live for. His purpose is to fuck cars and defeat death.

I hate that "power of love" shit Benz says after the final battle. So Carlito reunited with his beloved Toyota, you KNOW he thought he would never see her again. There was no love in this journey. Every time Carlito felt love he was forced to move on.

Who is Carlito? Throughout all this he's just a vessel, a representation of self desruction. Hedonism. Carlito Benz is a symbol.
