Upon hearing her explanation, Clementine only nods slowly in response, understanding that not everyone had the luxury of traveling into different parts of the city. It was huge, after all. It’d be naive of her to think so. Letting the door close behind them, she scans the room to make sure everything was in order. Some cats were silently napping in their favorites spots, but others were walking about, seemingly curious of the new face.

“Mmm, on a Saturday? Not often, but… it happens. A group nearly filled the place earlier but left about an hour ago.” She shrugs it off, indifferent to the lack of customers. Having them around was a good thing overall, but some weeks it never ended. Clementine took advantage of the quiet time when she had it.

Noticing the small black and white cat that made herself known, her eyes lit up, smiling down at the two. “Looks like Diana wanted to see you first, huh? Interesting. She normally likes to observe.” Following behind, a larger built gray cat meowed loudly, as if he were being ignored. Rolling her eyes, she takes a seat nearby, rubbing her thumb and middle finger together in a fast motion to call him over.

  “And this one here is Chuck. Looks intimidating buuuut… he’s just a big softy. Probably waiting for me to brush him like always.” As he hopped onto the seat, she waited for him to get situated, sparing a glance back at Katniss. Curiosity piqued, though she didn’t want to unnecessarily pry if she fought back. “So… do you normally take trips out for your friend like today? Or was this for a special occasion of some sort?”

Katniss shakes her head as she sits down, pulling one of the treats out and breaking it in half so she can offer a piece to Chuck.  “No, this is pretty out of the ordinary.  I uh,” Katniss rubs the back of her neck uneasily, then decides there’s no shame in hiding the truth for now.  “I’m from the lower levels in Fibonacci.  It’s tough to get out when the rich control the elevators up.  Just recently earned enough to get out, so stuff like this...” she gestures to the cafe after handing the treat to Chuck, “all of it’s pretty new to me.  And my friend’s too young to up and leave like me, so I’m here for her.”

“I’m more than a little out of my element here.  But I’m... guessing that was kind of obvious,” she offers a half-hearted grin.  Katniss knows she probably sticks out like a sore thumb, and she’s thankful that Clementine has been gracious enough to have not mentioned it yet.

          ★ –;; It was only a matter of time, he thinks, before his past comes creeping back to haunt him. It had shown its nasty little head in tiny ripples; first there had been whispers [well, more like shouts] of his old bounty, then there had been the incident which had brought forth his wings once again– quiet murmurings spread, after all, slowly, into cacophonous noise, if given the chance. Death and destruction cling to his heels like his own shadow, like old friends, and why he had though this place would be any different was beyond him. Over a century of high-tailing it from bounty hunters should have taught him that lesson long ago.

And yet, and yet, he had only continued to let the proverbial other shoe hang over his head until it decided to be well enough a time for it to drop.

Shady bars are like saloons– they remind him a bit of home, even though he knows he shouldn’t be there, knows he’s playing with fire, but still can’t help the small satisfied feeling in the pit of his stomach as he finishes downing a glass of whiskey.

It’s just that.

Well.

“Hey motherfucker!”

“The shit did you just call me?!”

Shady bars are like saloons, and the fights are inevitable.

Trust him to stick his nose where it doesn’t belong; trust him to let out a ‘hey fellas, can’t we just get along?’; trust him to duck and weave and dodge until one of them finally accidentally punches another and now the blame is all on Vash, and–

“Hey, I know you!! You’re that guy some kid was screamin’ about!”

It seems, after all, that every seedy hole in the wall will always be crawling to the brim with someone after some cash.

Maybe this place was more like home than he thought.

“Out of the way out of the way OUT OF THE WAY OUT OF THE WAY!!!”

Another bullet goes flying past his ear and he positively wails.

“What did I ever do to deserve this!?!?”

Katniss doesn’t belong here.  She’s young, far too young to be drinking, but the bartenders here remind her of Greasy Sae and the rough crowd from the Hob and in the whirlwind of homesickness she’s been feeling, this is as close to content as she’s been since she arrived.  She doesn’t have the rapport with the bartenders she had with the merchants back home though, so she has to buy a decent amount of shitty bar ‘food’ to keep her seat in the far corner of the bar.  Katniss doesn’t mind though-- the food was awful in the Hob too.  It really is just like home.

Watching the other patrons is entertaining enough, and she’s happy to just snicker to herself at their drunken antics, when there’s a sudden shift in the atmosphere.  A man’s voice takes on a nasty edge, there’s a clatter, and she’s reaching for a bow before the words ‘bar fight’ actually make their way through her mind.  

A black-haired man towers over the rest of the crowd and actually seems to be trying to settle things down--an admirable but naive choice-- and she winces when the bar starts to turn on him.  She’s already out of her seat at this point, bow in hand and her fingers twitching to grab an arrow from the quiver on her back, but in such close quarters her weapon isn’t especially effective.  Unless...

Something about leaving the poor stranger to die or get mobbed sits wrong with her and against her better judgement, she decides to step in.  The way to the door from her less crowded end of the bar is relatively clear and gives her a good shot, though that’s rapidly changing, and she can see one maniac standing on his barstool and waving his gun with it pointed at the tall man in red--  he’ll do.  She draws, takes aim at his hand, and fires as she backs towards the door.  Katniss then breaks into a run as the man shrieks, the gun clatters to the ground, and the crowd scrambles to find the source of the sudden, shiny length of metal embedded in the instigator’s wrist. 

Whether the pacifist stranger decides to actually take advantage of the momentary distraction or not is up to him, but she’s already outside and shimmying her way up the side of the building across the street to watch the chaos from safety.  She’s not especially well-hidden, given her silver arrows catch and reflect the neon lights of the shady alleyway and its building, broadcasting her location and identifying her as the mystery archer.

Clementine’s blonde friend isn’t a close acquaintance, but every time Katniss sees that shock of bright gold hair before his face comes into view, she feels a painful twinge of regret she can’t explain. 

“Just like Peeta…” she murmurs to herself one afternoon the three teens are done hanging out and Kanji is standing to walk away, his back to her.

“… I’m sorry,” she mouths, too choked up to speak properly.  “I would have gotten you out of there if I could have.”  She didn’t have any control over the evacuation attempt, or the fact that Peeta was left behind in the Capitol’s clutches after she escaped the Quarter Quell, but she’s wracked with guilt all the same.

Katniss sighs, letting her head tilt back.  It’s not the most comfortable, sitting on the stoop of the building, but the brick wall behind them is solid and that’s what Katniss needs right now more than comfort.  Grounding.  “…I should have done more to thank Madge for what she did for my family and Gale.  It could have been her death, sticking her neck out for me the way she did.  But she did it anyway, without ever asking for anything in return.”

“… For all I know, it did kill her.  I disappeared from Panem without a trace when I got taken.  They probably went after her for information.  Probably beat her like they did Gale, or worse.”  She shakes her head.  “… And I’ll never be able to apologize or thank her.  There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t regret not taking the chance to when I had it.”

  She was from a world of skrulls and clones. She was from a world part of a goddamn multi-verse. The idea of another version of herself running around, while it did make Natasha uneasy, was nothing new. The fact that she had to find this double and save her — well that was a whole other story.

   Her movements weren’t any more hasty than usual as she pulled on her catsuit and zipped it up. Gauntlets clicked into place, guns and knives slid into their usual homes. If her double was anything like her, Natasha hoped that she was at least competent enough to stay alive long enough to be found.

   Mindlessly she reached for her phone as it buzzed, expecting a message from either Jess or Clint updating her on their own searches. Alone, she didn’t bother to hide her surprise, clear in the widening of green eyes, when she saw the name. Katniss. There were a lot of things she couldn’t remember, but she’d never forgotten the girl from the other city. She quickly scanned through the messages, discerning that it was in fact the same girl and that Katniss remembered her. She remembered.

  Rather than text back, she quickly called the number. Despite the spike of nervousness that previously been completely absent, Natasha’s voice was even as always when she spoke immediately after the call connected. “Katniss. Where are you?”

Katniss nearly jumps out of her skin when her phone starts ringing, its tone alien to her since she’s hardly been here long enough to have set one more similar to the one she kept in the past.  Relief washes over her in waves when she sees it’s from Natasha, and she picks up without another moment’s hesitation.  Her old friend still sounds the same as she did when she saw her last, and she’s comforted by how calm Natasha sounds.

“You have no idea how glad I am to hear your voice.”  The relief in Katniss’s voice is palpable.  “I’m... um,” Katniss falters, unsure of where she is.  All these new names are so confusing.  What did the machine tell her the condo is located?  “The Archimedes Ward,” she remembers after a few seconds.  “I’m in the Archimedes Ward, where are you?”  She realizes as soon as she asks how completely useless the answer will be and winces.

“I mean, are you close to where I am?  I don’t actually know where anything is, I just got here a few days ago and I’m not sure what’s going on, or how I got here, and I’m kind of freaking out.”  Panic is starting to creep into her voice, despite her attempts to stay calm.

Nothing can ever just be easy, can it?

Hurled from the relative comfort of her previous "home," if you could call a city you'd been forcefully abducted to that, she finds herself yet again lost, confused and alone in Spirale.  "Welcome to the scenic Isola Radiale," the machine had droned upon her arrival, her quiver of arrows and a backpack weighing heavily on her shoulders, and all she could do was sigh.  Too weary for shock, she found herself accepting this new environment with as much ease as could be expected of a seventeen year old girl who'd been thrice kidnapped and twice sent to her death.

She'd had a few days to settle in, making her new room in her condo as homey as possible.  The photograph of Prim found its way into Spirale with her, nestled deep in her backpack and wrapped in a newspaper from a city she can't be sure ever existed.  Her armor, still almost brand new, was strapped to her upon arrival and has since been waxed and stacked neatly on her dresser.  Her bow and arrows, miraculously undamaged, rest next to her dresser.

They were the first thing Katniss reached for when her phone woke her up with its jarring announcement.  She settled once she realized her life was in no immediate danger but still kept them within arms' reach as she listened to the voicemail.  Katniss let it cycle through her head, and let her head fall heavy into her hands and her phone fall to the carpet.

"Fuck," she breathed.  "You have got to be kidding me."  The stakes of the Arena seem to follow her everywhere.

Hours went by before she could bring herself to check her phone again.  By then, Katniss had conferred with roommates who had gotten the same message and the same mysterious app.  Hers suggested her double was in the Fibonacci Ward.  Wherever the Hell that was.  There was no way she could handle tracking her down or dealing with it, and all she wished for is that she had the friends she had back in the Hive to rely on.  Expecting to find nothing, she pulled up the equivalent of the phonebook on her phone, and typed in the first name that came to mind for help in a situation like this: Natasha Romanova.

Katniss's jaw nearly hit the floor when a result and number popped up.  Natasha had gotten stuck here too.  Katniss was on her feet without registering consciously that she'd gotten up, hurriedly lacing her boots with one hand as she hobbled around her room to throw essentials into her backpack and strap on her armor.  If Natasha is here, Katniss can track her down.

OH BOY.  Okay, so… this is gonna sound off-the-wall bonkers, but I have a definite OTP for Katniss… Peeta...r… Parker.  Yes, you heard me.  Peter Parker.  Not Peeta, no thanks.

Back in a previous rp group, she met a Peter Parker who was, while a little too old to have a relationship with, a very close friend and mentor figure.  He was like the best of Peeta and Gale, rolled into one wholesome older brother and best friend for Katniss, and it was beautiful.  They had incredible chemistry and were SO fun to write interactions for.  I miss that relationship every day; it broke my heart to see their blog deactivated when the roleplayer left to pursue goals IRL. 

If there were to ever be a Spiderman: Homecoming aged Peter to appear in Spirale… I would very much want to see what the chemistry between him and Katniss would be and see if a relationship would be feasible based on that.

Katniss doesn’t have… the best reputation in her home ward.  While visitors and some locals enjoy her magic, anyone who knows her outside of her act finds her to be annoying at best.  She’s sullen and rude to most of the adults in the black market hubs she hangs out in.  Now that she’s beginning to find her way out of the low levels of Fibonacci and meet more people her age, her reputation is falling behind her and she’s finding it easier to make ‘friends’ or at the very least socialize without antagonizing everyone around her.

Character Survey of Doom

25. Describe the character’s thought process. Are they more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? 

Katniss is an extremely pragmatic girl, having been more or less forced into a survivalist mindset from a young age.  She has a strong sense of intuition, but knows when to put her emotions aside and focus on the logistics of a situation so she and those she cares about can make it through whatever trials they’re facing.  While she’s proud to have preserved Prim’s youthful idealism, she has none of her own. 

27. What are their areas of expertise? What, if anything, are they interested in learning more about? 

Katniss is an excellent archer and forager, having spent most of her life subsisting on whatever she could bring home.  Hunger and desperation are strong motivators and excellent teachers, in the right circumstances.  That being said, now that Katniss has settled into a more stable lifestyle, she has some interest in learning how to heal the way her mother and Prim used to, and how to bake like Peeta.  Small reminders of home, and practical skills to boot.

Katniss is a street magician.  She specializes in sleight-of-hand, and her best tricks utilize fire.  She’s currently homeless and pretty poor, so her act is constantly evolving based on which cobbled-together tools she has access to.  She’s gotten pretty good at disassembling lighters and scrounging up flash paper and similar items to work with, but when supplies run short, she’s hard-pressed to find a way to wow crowds.
