cold. everything is cold, and dark. like that one corner of the attic where the light just misses; where a spider might take refuge away from the presence of humans. for the spider, it feels safe. but to me, the darkness is intimidating; unfamiliar. the crunch of frost under my feet grounds me in the crisp chill of the dead of night. the rhythmic noise of each step is somewhat comforting, and yet the single set of crackling prints in the thick frost only serves to remind me how isolated i am, with only the ominous blue moon for company in this imprisoning void of liminal blackness. the street remains otherwise silent - it seems devoid of any other life. the night air has an aura of having stepped into another parallel realm of existence. one that doesn't recall the presence of humanity. looking up, surveying what lies past the monotonous grey buildings that tower above me, an expanse of inky black sky lurks behind vast, menacing clouds, illuminated by the ethereal presence of the moon looming overhead. constant, consistent, just as the steady comings and goings of the ghostly tendrils of breath filling my lungs with icy air that seeps through my flesh - permeates my very bones - and then retreating, escaping to slink around my face in dense clouds and fading away into the abyss around me. it's a continuous, ceaseless cycle, like that of the spider, in the dark attic corner of my mind, creeping its way around its web in the suffocating darkness, spinning glossy silk threads that glisten and shine like the sparse scattering of stars barely visible around the edges of the dense, gloomy clouds. as i peer upwards into the night sky, contemplating the cosmic orbs of light, out of the corner of my eye i notice a snowflake, glittering in the moon beams. gradually they gather, as the snowfall gets heavier, like uprooted dust floating in the rays of dim light. i almost expect them to take shape - to form a solid, corporeal entity - like the character of Count Dracula from Bram Stoker's iconic horror tale. the sheet of snow that has materialised on the ground provides a solace of sorts; a much welcome contrast from the omnipresent darkness enveloping the landscape. the layer that rests on the window ledges, atop the retired lamp posts and rows of naked winter trees lining the street, reminds me of the front cover of a Christmas card - only with the lingering feeling in the back of my mind that nobody else seems to occupy this place - that it all seems so dead. a ghastly moan of bitter wind rips through the air around me. it sends chills like seismic waves down my spine. i feel goosebumps rising along the lengths of my arms, already rigid from the cold, underneath the layers of clothing i put on - thinking it would offer some protection, but to no avail. i've been feeling like i might meet my death here - perhaps the rigor mortis is setting in prematurely? the mere notion makes my stumach lurch. a dull, resonating ache in my jaw begins to make its presence known. it's only now i realise that, for probably the entire length of this journey, i've been clenching my teeth together because of the frigid blizzard conditions that only amplify the ache. the pain travels throughout the rest of my body, bringing awareness to the tension in my freezing muscles. the rush of pain erases all previous hope i had of escaping - i'm walking aimlessly, endlessly, and i'm not going to make my way out of this darkness - is the sun ever going to rise again? who's to say? my mind deviates back to that dark attic corner, back to the spider and its web - and i, the oblivious, bumbling fly, like a moth into a flame, stagger my way through the hazy tenebrous tundra into what i deem to be my own death-trap.

Smoky hands tighten their grip on my throat and I'm pulled out of sleep. I can’t breathe. Everything is still hazy, but I recognise impending flames licking at the dense green around me, as the offensive fumes waft nearer, warning me of the inferno approaching. The whole forest is enveloped in heat – not comfortable and warm heat, but hot, blazing, violent torridity. My home, the only one I've ever known, is disappearing. Just like that. Trees that once gave me solace are now burning down to cinders, vegetation crumbles to ash around me. The scene would almost have a kind of beauty to it if it wasn’t intent on killing all around it – spreading rapidly, like a plague, already having claimed untold lives and homes. The presence of the massive blaze brings about a sinister crimson light to the once dark dusk air. The humans, this is their doing. An endless number of ecosystems under threat, and what can we do only watch everything suffer? The plants, the animals, right down to the soil and the microorganisms that compose it, everything is being eaten up; suffocated and consumed, unable to survive the growing threat. The world will be brought to its knees, smothered. Gasping for air. The dehydrated ground taunts a mass of destruction that only continues to grow, to rush in every direction and take with it everything it touches. The noise is insufferable. The crackling, the crashing and snapping of trees falling to their death into the crepitating undergrowth. To me, it translates to screams of anguish, tormented wailing, shrill and petrifying. The sound of pain and death. Time passes. And it could have been only a moment, but it feels like an eternity when all I can do is wait, watching the black plumes rising from the fires menacingly, and trying not to be absorbed into the mess of decay and overwhelming misery. I sit, dazed, and observe the flurry of other animals trying to cope with the fiasco when an unexpected thwap of cold shock falls upon the place and shakes me out of a carbon monoxide-induced stupor. The pyre is knocked off its feet by the water, momentarily suppressed, with a dark sky afterward, and smoke. Steam seeps from the embers remaining in the charred grass and broken branches. Droplets hang off the leaves of the bough from which I spectate my home’s demise. The light from the fire is replaced with dark, scorched plants; black and dead where it used to be so green and lush. The fire is now somewhat distant; the amber glow that signified peril keeps its distance, for now. It will return, when the water in the ground evaporates. Perhaps eventually it will dominate the entire forest and bring about absolute destruction, widespread death, and me along with it.
