For over 30 years, Allied Arts of Whatcom County has been a primary driving force in cultivating and nourishing the arts scene in Whatcom County and serves more than 50,000 people annually. Through community events involving visual artists and musicians, its sponsorship of exhibits and programs focused on local artists, its extensive arts education in local schools and its public advocacy for the arts, Allied Arts has improved the cultural health and vitality of the community. Currently, Allied Arts is focusing on developing and increasing collaborative relationships with other local and regional organizations serving Whatcom County. Teaching Artist of the Week: Jamichael Henterly teaches science through art!

One example of Mary's workshops is a Mixed Media Collage, where students explore using recycled materials to create collage art. It involves drawing, painting, and collaging onto canvas panels. Students work together, and in doing so learn that they play an important role within their community! Mary likes to use the student’s ideas because they are amazing and it gets them to take ownership of the project. She believes everyone has art to contribute! Teaching Artist of the week! Textile Artist, LaVera Langeman!
LaVera Langeman teaches textile based craft projects, and believes the process of art should always be a positive, confidence-building experience! In her Felt Doll making workshop, kids will create an imaginative doll from felt material, each in their own unique style. After finishing, students also can write stories about their creations! Students have fun while learning the basics of sewing.

Teaching Artist of the Week: Painter and Puppeteer, Christian Anne Smith!
Want to bring your lesson plans alive? Bring Christian Anne Smith into your classroom, and she’ll teach students the art of Puppet creation. Not only do students have fun in Christian’s workshops while flexing their creativity muscles, but the resulting puppets can easily be worked into the teaching curriculum and used for classroom learning activities! Students will be proud of their work, and the puppets can bring to life all sorts of academic topics such as: folktales from various countries, people throughout history, or even just a fun classroom mascot.

Teaching Artist of the Week: Theater Instructor Kamarie Chapman!
Kamarie believes that anyone at any age can learn how to express themselves by writing and performing the work they have created. Kamarie gets students moving, writing, and actively expressing themselves with her specialized lesson plans. As Kamarie puts it: “Collaboration, community, and creativity are what I believe are the keys to unlocking the writer/performer in us all!”

Images of the Written is an exhibit of art works in which each piece represents literature, poems, plays and books visualized. September Juried Show Artists of the Week: Amy Armitage & Candice Gerard
Visit our gallery today to see the work of our Artists of the Week, Amy Armitage and Candice Gerard. Amy creates oil paintings that often portray animals and plants. Amy strives “for paintings with two themes, one being the subject matter, the other being poetic imagination.” Allied Arts Inside the Box Series will feature work from Candice. She creates wearable jewelry pieces from genuine gemstones artistically wrapped in sterling silver. Check it out!
September Juried Show Artists of the Week: Pearl Yewell & Tom Jeffreys
Come and enjoy some beautiful works of art from our Artists of the Week, Pearl Yewell and Tom Jeffreys, on display at this month’s September Juried Artist Series. Pearl creates beautiful and realistic acrylic and oil paintings that depict images of the life in the West. Pearl believes that “through literature and paintings, we see people in their surroundings and daily life and we connect what has gone before with what is happening today.” Tom creates oil paintings of females that invoke literary illusions. Tom explains that he “gravitated to oil painting because of the richness of the materials, its glorious colors, and the beauty of the female figure, which I find compelling and challenging.”
September Juried Show Artists of the Week: Len Shaffer and Mary Morton
Come and see our Artists of the Week, Len Shaffer and Mary Morton, at our gallery this month for September’s Juried Artist Series. Len has been studying art for a number of years now, creating pieces that are representational and focus on his contemporary aims. Len’s goal is to “represent my subjects as they appear to me at the moment.” Mary focuses on creating lifelike charcoal on paper pieces that portray various trees. She states that “the tree drawings are expressions of my experience in the forest.” See them in our gallery today!
September Juried Show Artists of the Week: Ellen Clark & Joyce Prigot
Allied Arts’ Artists of the Week are Ellen Clark and Joyce Prigot! Ellen creates beautiful watercolor paintings that reflect her inspirations, such as a trip to Waikiki and being given roses by her husband. Her goal is “to spread the thrill of art throughout the world by teaching residencies in as many places as possible.” Joyce has earned many juried awards and has participated in over 40 group exhibitions. Her current paintings include landscapes of northwest Washington, where she currently resides. She states that her “oil paintings are an offshoot of direct realist painters whose subject matter was the world around them.”
Come check out Allied Arts’ September Juried Artist Series featuring pieces that visualize written literature, poems, plays, and books. Our artists will include Amy Armitage, Ellen Clark, Candice, Gerard, Joyce Prigot, Len Shaffer, Mary Morton, Pearl Yewell and Tom Jeffries. The opening reception will be held during the Downtown Art Walk, Friday, September 6th from 6pm to 9pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk Thru with the artists starting at 7pm on opening night. August Juried Show Artist of the Week: Tore Ofteness
Stop by Allied Arts to see our Artist of the Week, Tore Ofteness. Tore shows some of Europe’s most beautiful areas through unique camera angles and lighting. As a collection of some of Tore’s favorite images from European travels from 1984 to 2011, some of the scenes depicted include Cinque Terre in Italy, Marienplatz in Germany, and Stonehenge in England. Come check out these wonderful photos all through the month of August!
