“ I thought you were a pirate. ”
Mulan, heedless of the hand offered to her for assistance, clambered to her own two feet and dusted the dirt off her strange new pants. There was...very little about this so-called land without magic that she liked, but the light weight of her clothing was one of them. Except for times like now, where it proved to be thin and uncomfortable, leaving her longing for her old armor. And sometimes, again like now, her old sword.
“ Pirates don’t help people, ” she added.
@mywhataguy fights like a girl !! 👊
Mulan looked curiously over at the small man tending the horses. It wasn’t her place to say, of course--wasn’t her place in the slightest--but she couldn’t help but wonder....
“ I thought you were a knight, ” she said finally, bluntly. She had seen people who tended to horses like that before, far away, in another village. She’d been told then they were not considered knights but squires, an apparently important distinction: only the former, she’d been led to believe, was an honorable title. The latter was...only unfortunate.

“ You have very strange traditions here. ”
Jian spoke without thinking, the brunt of his concentration entirely on the sprig hanging overhead. It would not be so peculiar to him if he had ever before known Jaq’s people to dry their herbs like this, but this was the first he had seen of it. And to see it during these frustratingly cold winter months! “ What is the purpose of that herb? Is it medicine? ”
"Jian--- you-- you like tea right? I uh--" Clearing his throat, the squire sheepishly extended a wooden box to him, cheeks tinting a faint shade of pink. "I wanted you to have this. I found some blends in the market that might--- might remind you of home." He swallowed thickly. Jian was a formidable warrior and someone the squire had come to admire, perhaps a bit too much. Still, he wanted to properly express his appreciation for their--- /friendship/.
Jian smiled kindly, brilliantly, at his strange new friend. Jaq always seemed so...nervous around him. More nervous than around others. Jian could only assume it was all to do with his otherness, a thing for which he could not apologize: foreign though he may be to those here, he knew his conduct would have made his family proud. For the most part.
“ Thank you, Jaq. This is very kind of you. ” He had gotten better, at least, at wrapping his tongue around the strange sounds of a new language. Jian bowed as he accepted the gift--deeper than a perfunctory bob, but not so deep as to be mistaken for being overly formal. (That was not the way here, but that was, among other things, a tradition he refused to forget.) “ I regret that I do not have anything to give back, ” he added, aware that exchange was customary here. “ Please, allow me to cook for you this evening. It is the least I can do to repay your thoughtfulness. ”

“HEY!” Ruby protests, voice rising to a whine as she shoves her girlfriend’s shoulder. (But she’s grinning as Mulan’s hand slips into her own.) “Fine, fine; I won’t meddle! For now.” the waitress teases, free hand wrapping around her girlfriend’s bicep in return. “No promises if I catch her eyeing someone cute, though.”
“ You wouldn’t be you if you didn’t meddle then, ” Mulan replies, teasing her right back. Her smile is...relaxed, for a change. Almost sweet and excited. There’s a light and a freedom in the cavern of her chest that she hasn’t felt in--well. In years. For most of her life. And she owes that to Ruby.
Ruby, whose hand she squeezes and its twin wraps around her bicep; Ruby, whose cheek she kisses for good behavior and in silent thanks; Ruby, who she leads away by starting to walk again, wanting to see--everything. All of the secrets of Storybrooke, all of the places Mei Rong knew and all of the places she hadn’t, everything open to discovery and rediscovery now that her fullest self was here.
“ This world is...beautiful, you know. So tranquil. I never noticed it before...recently. ” Before I was me again, Mulan thought, her cheeks coloring in quiet shame at the ungrateful woman she had been under the spell, unable to see the woods for the trees.
ofspellbooksandswords:
Francois was not used to being saved, as he knew how to protect himself. Granted, one man versus multiple bandits did not put him at the best odds. Fortunately, a rather talented woman had managed to save him. Her skills were admirable, and Francois could not help but wonder what training she had and how long she had been training.
Brushing himself off, Francois gave Mulan a smile, “only when looking for my vigilante of a boyfriend,” he laughed, yet was not joking around at all. “I think any day you get assaulted is a bad day,” he added, “how can I thank you?”
“ Then I hope for his sake he’s found his way out of these woods, ” Mulan sighed, finally looking to the other man. She ran a hand through her hair, an old habit she had never quite shaken, even in training: before her was a man as ordinary as any other, save that his armor gleamed with royal insignia and polish. Not much of a soldier, then. The royals rarely were.
“ This place is dangerous. You should return with a party if you’re going to continue to seek him out there. ”
She knew her manner was cold, her face an icy mask of indifference--truthfully, she had not come to these woods to save incautious monarchs or their hapless paramours. What she wanted was much, much simpler: to prove herself worthy again of the honors she once held, or to lose herself trying. She could not return empty-handed to her village, and Shan Yu’s dagger remained unretrieved.
“ You can thank me by not dying, ” she said, brushing past him to inspect a nearby tree. There was a carving in it half undone by the scars of the skirmish, something...perhaps useful, if only she could read the characters....
livesuntold:
“Yeah, and? PLAYING FAIR’S not exactly what I’m here to do.” Literally. A trickster by birth, it was once practically her job to find a weak spot and use it. (All in good fun… for her, at least.) Areum is quick to mirror Mulan’s stance, legs bent and fists raised, a shit-eating grin softening the sharp planes of her cheeks. “C’mon; hit me with your best shot!”
Mulan returns Areum’s grin, but it lives for only an instant: in the next blink of an eye it is gone, replaced instead by a right hook flying in fast from the side. She aims to hit the Dokkaebi where she herself was hit, though there’s more power behind her own strikes: even in sparring, it is difficult to reign herself back. She was trained for combat, not for fun.
The warrior falls back as well, withdrawing as soon as she’s landed the hit. “ You’re slow, Dokkaebi, ” she teases, eyes bright and alert. “ You make yourself an easy target. ”
;;i keep meaning to get in here and do stuff but also…no. i am not feeling 100% and i just ugh

"not all lesbians listen to tegan and sara."
a GIRL worth fighting for!
“ --And not all Asians know karate, and not all bookworms want fantastic adventures, and not all stereotypes are bad. ”
Still, Mulan smiled with a sweet, gentle, almost infinite patience, moving her head so Belle had nowhere to look but her eyes. “ You’re being too quick to judge. And you, of all people, should know better. I just said you might like them. ”
"you can tell she's been single for a while. i can't even remember the last time she clipped her nails."
a GIRL worth fighting for!
“ Are you sure it was her nails you were looking at? ”
--But she’s only teasing. She feels for the other girl, even as she subtly slips her hand into Ruby’s. “ She’ll find someone else. Just...give her time to heal on her own. And D O N ‘ T, ” Mulan added, turning to her girlfriend and leveling an accusing finger at her, “ go trying to play matchmaker for her! ”

"i'm so fucking gay."
"You really are beautiful like this." He muttered, caressing the male's cheek. "You're beautiful in general-- don't get me wrong. But that touch of color on your cheeks is heavenly." Jacques purred, praising the male as he sat beside him on the blanket by the pond. "Your lips..." his thumb traced over them, the squire humming to himself. "Like rose petals. I'd love to taste them, if you'd allow it."
It was--romantic, in the old way of knights and fairy tales. A moonlit pond, a blanket and a picnic, the stars overhead...his fingers tangled together with another’s. It was awe-inspiringly, poetically, movie-worthily romantic. And not at all something Jian ever thought he would get, let alone in Storybrooke.
Small towns, conservative minds, and quiet boys who like other boys seldom mix well.
He’d been...careful. Quiet. He had kept his head down and his voice low. He had never even kissed another man, but here he was. With Jack. On a secret midnight rendezvous. Wondering how everything could feel so wrong and so right at the same time. Of course being here with the bartender felt right. Being near someone. Being quiet, watching the moon, breathing in clean air, listening to the forest. But the rest--the food, the blanket, the romance--that felt like a thing from someone else’s story, a thing alien to Ji himself. How Jack had guessed from just a few shy smiles and one or two conversations was anyone’s guess.
Still. However it came to pass...Ji was glad it did. Glad to be sitting here next to Jack. Glad to glance up and smile for him out of one side of his face, embarrassed and pleased by the praise all at once. Glad to have a quiet moment to look out to the way the moon reflected itself on the pond before glancing back to answer.
“ I didn’t know you were such a romantic. I feel a little...under-prepared, I guess. ” Still, Ji shifted a little closer to Jack, his own eyes dropping to Jack’s lips. “ I think...I would like to...very much. ”
