When transgender youths have access to a puberty blocker, their chances of suicide and mental health problems in the immediate term and down the road decline significantly, a new study finds.
âTransgender youth have a much greater risk of suicide, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, if they have access to a puberty blocker, their chances of suicide and mental health problems in the immediate term and down the road decline significantly, a new study finds.
The study, the first of its kind to examine access to pubertal suppression and suicidality, was published Thursday in the medical journal Pediatrics. The research comes as a handful of states are considering placing restrictions on transgender health care.
One state, South Dakota is considering a law that would make it a felony for health care providers to prescribe medication to stop puberty, among other gender affirming health care treatments. South Carolina and Missouri are also considering similar restrictions.
Those who underwent the puberty-blocking treatment had lower odds of lifetime suicidal ideation and past-month severe psychological distress, compared to those who wanted the treatment but did not receive it.
Researchers reached that conclusion by analyzing data from the 2015 US Transgender Survey, involving 20,619 people between the ages of 18 and 36 years old.
Some smaller studies in the past have shown that people who have undergone puberty-blocking treatments early in life, along with psychological support, have better mental health outcomes later in life.â

There is no shame in changing labels!! No matter how long you identified as one thing, it's okay to find that you don't fit that label anymore. People are always growing and changing and realising new things about themselves, and that should be understood and accepted.

This is true all throughout the year, but I want to highlight these affirmations this Hanukkah. Â The phrases on these sets are based on a set by @genderqueerpositivityâ about trans lesbian women. Â I have a different identity set for each night of Hanukkah, so if you donât see your identity here, please be patient. =D
And because Iâm not Jewish and I want to center Jewish voices, Iâll be featuring a link to a different @shiraglassman story each night.

đâ YOUTH ACTIVISM SERIES -Â THE IT GETS BETTER PROJECT đâ
THE IT GETS BETTER PROJECT IS LOOKING FOR OPENLY LGBTQ+ YOUTH ACTIVISTS TO SHARE YOUR STORY IN A WEB DOCU-SERIES.
Our goal is to give viewers around the world a hopeful, affirming glimpse into the lives of activists who identify as LGBTQ+ around the world (including outside of USA) and a respect for the intersectionality of many forms of activism. Weâre looking for young people between the ages of 14-24 who are comfortably âoutâ as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer and who are involved in intersectional causes that arenât necessarily directly about LGBTQ+ equality.
Maybe youâre part of a group of young queer activists working to end gun violence or fight for change in immigration policy. Maybe youâre creating a space for other LGBTQ+ youth to join you in advocating for global climate change or local workers rights. Maybe youâre creating art as activism related to racial inequality or reproductive justice. Maybe you are just a young person who is passionate about a particular cause and want to see a change in the world. Weâre looking for young people between 14-24 who are changing the worldâŠor even your own community. No cause is too small!
Does being openly LGBTQ+ impact your view of the world? Why are you so passionate about the cause youâre fighting for? The time commitment is limited- filming would take place over 1-2 days in your area based on your availability.
Whatâs your story? Please email us ASAP and let us know! [email protected]
PLEASE REFERENCE âACTIVISMâ IN THE EMAIL AND TELL US ABOUT YOU!
Please do a regular checkup on your friends. They wonât ask for emotional support.
Today we mourn, honor, and remember the transgender people who were murdered because of their gender identity or expression.
Trans day of rememberance
Dear cis folks, please take these Ls.
For allies, today.
Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Honor those killed in anti-trans acts of violence; mourn the lights in our community that have gone out; say their names and tell their stories; and vow to fight for those still with us.
