In the spirit of focusing on what can be done, Sustainia Award celebrates 10 leading sustainability solutions deployed in 84 countries.
From food, fashion, energy, transportation, education and health, the awards showcased an alternative to the grim future scenarios we are so often presented with and made sustainability tangible to the innovators, investors, consumers and policy makers across sectors and regions.
The 10 projects presented each offered unique solutions to sustainability challenges, but it was the Nigerian initiative Wecyclers that had Arnold Schwarzenegger and the rest of juryâs vote and took the Sustainia Award 2014.
Wecyclers enables low-income communities to make money on waste piling up in their streets. By deploying a fleet of cargo bicycles to collect and recycle unmanaged waste in Lagos, Wecyclers lets families exchange garbage for consumer goods via an SMS-based point system.

July 1st.
182nd day of the year.
Itâs 12pm.
Congratulations youâve officially wasted half a year.
I finally understand what blink-182 means.
I FIND that many of the moments I experience while in love are often indescribable within the English language. Where is the word for that moment in between first realizing you care for someone new, but are not totally in love with them yet? What about something that describes an action in one succinct word, rather than a drawn out phrase? We have twenty different ways to describe the word âpurple,â but nothing that captures the euphoric moment of seeing a long-distance lover for the first time in months.
You can tell the values of a culture based on its language. Here are the best words from around the world that describe the emotion and actions of love, yet are not easily translated.

âYou Shell Not Passâ
Early this morning under the cover of darkness, Shell tried to move their oil drilling rig, Polar Pioneer, out of port in Seattle to begin its journey to the Arctic. Thanks to the work of dozens of brave kayaktivists, it didnât get very far.
This isnât the first time kayaktivists have taken to the water to defend the Arctic from oil drilling.
So far, 24 kayaktivists have been pulled from the water and arrested for violating the Coast Guardâs 500-foot âsafety zoneâ in proximity to the Polar Pioneer, which led former mayor of Seattle, Mike McGinn to tweet the following:
In a sane world USCG and SPD would be corralling Shellâs arctic drilling rig, not clearing its path. #ShellNo pic.twitter.com/XMwhg8sV4P
â Mike McGinn (@mayormcginn) June 15, 2015
Now, apparently the rig has run aground because of changing tides. Ever heard of a tide chart, buddies?Â
You canât make this stuff up, folks! Stay tuned for updates.
