there is a common misconception within the fandom that komaeda is a well-strung liar,, a cruel one at that. and frankly? i don’t think so. he has the tendency to play mindgames due to his own worldview and perception of everyone around him but overall, he is not someone who lies for the sake/thrill of it like ouma does. yes, ouma and komaeda were made with several parallels between their characters in mind; obviously so kodaka’s whole concept behind ouma was to replicate komaeda’s vibe and create another character who’s generally strange and mysterious (thus the parallels in their deaths), but that doesn’t mean that their personalities are 1:1. i mean,

again, woobifying his actions by themselves is wrong. however the concept of komaeda being the self-centered trickster a lot of people see him as is,, incorrect. it just doesn’t sit with me, especially that komaeda is more selfless and well-meaning in his own terrible way than anything else. even his death itself was sacrifical - upon learning about the horrible truth of the neo world program, he tried to kill everyone but chiaki, thus cleaning the world of its true danger: the remnants of despair. the painful way in which he died was unfortunately required to carry on with his plan and tick off all the checks in order to trick everyone into believing that he had killed himself and he bore through it all for the sake of saving the world’s hope. (in the short ova, it is mentioned that even after komaeda’s psyche was recreated, the traumatic way in which he died impaired it and he had to be rehabilitated before being awakened. his death was literally That Bad.)

the more i think about it, the more i feel like the entire concept of the despair disease being inflicted on and affecting komaeda as well as ibuki and akane was precisely to confirm the fact that he’s not a liar. after all, his reversed personality was that of one. there were several little snippets i will talk about the second i stop being lazy and get some caps of all his scenes during the outbreak as well, but this post’s already long, so. catch yall later
