ok yeah no I fuck with this design heavy now
Possibly controversial take, but every day I think about how much better Arknights would be if it just abandoned ADV format and used NVL instead for its visual novel segments.
I never really thought about it until in Lonetrail where Jara told Silence "You of all people should know. I was never a mother, but I had a child." and imagined the whole scene presented like Fate/Stay Night and I think I would have melted right there
As someone who is not well-versed enough in visual novels - what do those formats stand for?
ADV - Text box at the bottom like Clannad
NVL - Text superimposed over the art, like Mahoyo
ADV is the more common format, though some real heavy hitters like Fate/Stay Night and Umineko are in NVL.
While ADV is easier to read and is the format most people are used to, NVL allows for much more narration-heavy experiences like you're actually reading a full on book with art and music.
It is the kind of experience Arknights started going for starting with Chapter 8, and yet they stayed with the ADV format which is more video gamey, like an RPG cutscene.
I just think they're working against themselves insisting on ADV and putting out a story as gargantuan as Lonetrail
I don’t know much about Visual Novels, but I think the NVL format could also help with one of the problems I have with Arknights: lack of description
Like for example, in an action scene, I have a hard time understanding what’s going on because all they show is two pngs smacking into each other while sound effects play. I have no idea who’s doing what and it takes me out of the scene.
In the NVL format, the writers could just, write out what’s happening instead of leaving it to the reader to piece it together from context
Pretty much, yeah
They kind of already want to do that. Alina succumbing to her wounds on Talulah's back was done without dialogue after Alina said her last words, Talulah just continues walking in silence as all the trees around her start to burn. Those sorts of scenes are much better served by being in NVL rather than having heavy narration stuck inside a three-line textbox
