The day my world stood still
So... R is almost 6 weeks old (whaaat?!) and I want to write down what I can remember about the day we met before I start to forget some of the details.
We arrived at the hospital at 5:45 (15 minutes early because sNick was too excited) and our nurse just happened to be a girl that I graduated from high school with. One nurse couldnāt get my IV (two failed attempts) so Lauren had to try and got it on the first shot (thank God).
Dr. N came in at about 6:30, checked me and called me 4cm and 60% and broke my water. Then, we met Nurse Mary who is a freaking ANGEL. Seriously, I love that girl. Mary was my nurse for all of my labor because our hospitalās nurses work 7-7. Anyways, once I was hooked up to my monitors etc. and my pitocin was started, we started walking the unit. We talked about boy and girl names and the spellings for the boy name. We found sNickās baby brothers name plate on the hospital wall and we bickered a little about the spelling because I wanted that for a boy middle name but I didnāt like the way it was spelled and we came back to that conversation several times through the day.
After a couple hours of walking, I asked Mary to check me again because I was having some noticeable pain and I planned on getting an epidural as soon as I got the OK. I had made a tiny amount of progress but any progress is progress, so I got the OK for my epidural and they called my CRNA in to get things started.
While I was getting my epidural, I was a nervous wreck because Nick had to be out of the room and I was having contractions, Mary held my hand and pressed her forehead against mine and then, of course, I cried.
Once I had that magnificent epidural in place, Nick and I hung out and watched Deal or No Deal.
My labor stalled at 6cm for 3 hours (ugh)
And stalled again at 8cm for an hour (double ugh)
When Dr. N came in to check me at 3:45, she said I was still at 8cm and 80% but said she would be back at about 4:15 to check me again.
Dr. N called and asked Mary to check me again around 4:00 and I hadnāt made any progress and Mary started to talk with me about Dr. N considering a C-Section because I stalled again and baby was having increased heart rates with my contractions. I really didnāt care how the baby got out, as long as he or she was safe.
Dr. N was back in my room at 4:15 and checked me again (still 8 and 80%) and talked to me about how the C-section would go and that it didnāt mean I wouldnāt ever deliver a bang vaginally in the future. Then, she said she would like to have me TRY a couple pushes just to see if we could jump start my cervix a little.
I tried one push at 4:25 and pushed myself to 10cm and 100%
Dr. N asked Mary to get things ready for delivery and told me to rest through my next couple contractions so I would have the strength to push for as long as I needed to get the baby out.
I started pushing again at 4:37 and at 5:03, I learned that:
A) I am excellent at following directions
B) Dr. N should coach some sort of sport
D) My world has never been more perfect
