Aloha brotha, where we gonna go when the volcano blows? Well you should be going to see the Hawaiian locals in A Shot At Sundown perform one last time before we’re all engulfed in the lava from Mt. Kilauea. Legend has it that the ancient Hawaiians would sacrifice virgins to the volcanoe god in order to appease him; anyone going to take one for the team next time? All joking aside, we didn’t expect Hawaii to have the scene that it has. It’s so secluded from the mainland that we imagined touring bands never really bothered to venture out there. However, we were humbly proven otherwise. The band informed us that they have shared the stage with bands like Everclear (that’s sick), Divide the Day, All Time Low, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Man Overboard, Silverstein, Emery and Memphis Mayfire. It’s clear that Hawaii’s scene is very much alive, and by the looks of things, A Shot At Sundown are one of the front runners in their local scene.

Since forming as a 3 piece in 2011 and later adding a 2nd guitarist in 2012, they have released their self titled debut EP, which you can find on Itunes, Googleplay, Reverbnation, and Spotify. Notably, they are influenced by bands like Blink-182, Kamikaze, and Amber Pacific. After giving them a listen for our selves, they have a more poppy pop-punk sound. Pop punk these days is changing, with bands like The Story so Far, Neck Deep etc. It seems like pop-punk and hardcore are becoming and more intertwined. However, A Shot Sundown seem to be taking it back a little, with a sound that resembles A Loss For Words (circa 2009), All Time Low (circa 2008) etc. Some other lose resemblances, but more so from the point that they are keeping with the more melody driven, and breakdown absent sound that pop punk has been diverging from recently.

When you’re not in the studio, playing shows, or music in general, what would you guys likely be doing as a band on a weekend?
ASAS: “When the band has free time on the weekends we like to have bbqs, have the acoustic guitars out, invite some friends with some drinks and just relax.”
